  • If I didn't know any better as a gameshow fan, I'd say rigged too.

  • OK, once and for all, will everyone just PLEASE stop saying this show was RIGGED?

For the love of all game show kind, if this show WAS rigged, Jack Barry would've been out of a job (again), this show would've been history after a few weeks on CBS and/or syndication, and a lot of people (staff included), would've been in the slammer.

  • Just like today's games and tv, RIGGED

  • EPIC suit!!!

  • 216 to 1, Jack, according to my calculations

  • @theoriginaldonald thats why Jack Berry isnt a mathetician

  • Rigged. That girl should be pissed. They used her as a prop.

  • Suit up!!

  • It was probably rigged - just like Jack Berry's other show "21."

  • @guyfroml - Except that by the time this episode aired, it had been a federal offense to rig a game show for nearly 20 years (legislation prompted b/c of the quiz show scandals)...that was why Mark Burnett's planned GS entry from earlier this year (Our Little Genius) was pulled before its first airing, after it was learned that Burnett had been supplying answers to some of the young contestants.

  • @WhatsAYak Yak, I was just having some fun taking a poke at Berry - wasn't trying to be too serious. But, now that you've responded and I notice your Youtube name, I'm going to say you are something of a fan of the late Victor Buono - whose wit I thoroughly enjoyed and still sadly miss...."Ode to a Yak" first recited on Johnny Carson. Anytime I hear or see the word "yak" I always think of Mr. Buono.

  • @guyfroml - Oh, my bad...sorry about that! But no, my SN actually comes from an actual quote uttered on-air by a local Central PA newscaster following a piece on "yak skiing"(!).

  • Other examples:

    - The original Card Sharks had only one maximum Money Cards win early in the run, yet it still lasted 3 more years

    - Ditto the revival, whose biggest win was $29K early on, yet it also ran another 3 years

    - No one came close to topping Michael Larsen's record-breaking win on Press Your Luck, yet it ran for another 2 years afterwards

    - Daytime Millionaire hasn't had a $1M win since the 1st season(!), yet it still pulls decent ratings 8 years later

    You were saying??

  • The idea that they'd rig the game in Hal's favor "b/c people get bored of(sic) seeing people lose all the time" is laughable...Wheel hasn't had a $1M win in over 2 years, yet it's STILL the #1 syndicated show, just as Jeopardy's still #2, despite no one coming close to touching Ken Jennings' record-breaking $2.5M win back in 04.

Besides, given how hard Barry (not Berry) and Enright had to work to get back into viewers' good graces after the 50s, I doubt they'd make the same mistakes again.

  • that suit is rigged

  • That poor chick is such a good sport. If it was me, I'd be balling my eyes out losing a game like that.

  • THanks for posting this. I just subbed to you

  • Every game show involving this host was rigged: $64,000 Question, Joker's Wild, Tic-Tac-Dough..

  • “I’m not a mathematician.”

    No, you’re a lying pigfucker.

  • @Widmerpool99 Wow, someone's a little bitchy, eh?

  • this was rigged. Jack berry and enright was caught up in alot of game show scams, google it and you will see. Just listen to they way jack is talking and his reaction when the 3rd joker came up.They needed this guy to stay on air to keep viewers.

  • @dragonking3434 no, rigging was illegal in the 70s

  • @dragonking3434 Three problems with your theory.

    1) There was a little thing called Standards and Practices.

    2) Considering how quickly the slide projectors were spinning there's no way to rig it.

    3) The Joker's Wild was one of the most popular game shows on TV during this time, so getting and keeping viewers wasn't a problem.

    I await your crow eating.

  • @fatmanfiftythousand 3 flaws to your theory

    1. standards and practices- NEVER stopped people from cheating the system, google and you will see.

    2. the slide projector could have been spinning 200 miles an hour that doesent mean squat. still can cheat.

    3. people get bored of seeing people lose all the time, so yes keeping ratings up was a HUGE deal. There was alot of game show competition back then.

I think the crow just flew onto your plate sir, A-1 sauce?

  • @dragonking3434 Wrong on all fronts.

    1) If there WAS an S&P violation, the show would've been immediately pulled and never seen the light of day. Not only that, but the series itself probably would've faced cancellation- and considering Barry's checkered past...

    2) Actually, it does, because if it's spinning that fast you can't figure out where it'll stop when you shut it off.

    3) Again, this series did not have any ratings problems. At all.

    Three strikes, you're out.

  • @fatmanfiftythousand Give up, you'll never break some people's delusions, no evidence or logical presentation of points will make a difference. Any rare occurrence that happens to favor someone when they need it is a conspiracy.

  • There's now a pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks named Barry Enright. lol

  • Jay Crawford sent me here as well...I didnt laugh like he said i would though

  • Jay Crawford sent me here too!!! :D

  • Comment removed

  • jay sent me here

  • Jay Crawford sent me here =P

  • jay crawford sent me here LOL

  • @killermillerjdm first take all day right baby

  • jay sent me here lol

  • If I were Hal, I'd request to be buried in that suit!

  • Anyone who can wear a suit like that in public, deserves to win.

  • Awesome.

  • pulling a victory out of his ass

  • Now tell me...was this game show rigged?? or was it a legitimate spin and the suit really brought him that much luck????

  • Jack berry was the host of 21 when it was rigged

  • @TheOusooner56 Jack and dan rigged this show and TTD especially early in the shows run when Thom Mckee was on . they never did an honest game show.

  • @craftruth2009 ...except Thom McKee wasn't on "early in the shows run". The show was already on for a few years.

Have ANY of you fucking idiots heard of STANDARDS AND PRACTICES?

  • rigged

  • That Suit Should Be In The Game Show Hall Of Fame.

  • GREAT clip!! I love and miss Jack Barry...may he rest in peace. :)

  • rigged?

  • @Chiboy00 you better believe that it's rigged. Barry and Enright never learned the error of their ways. This was rigged, baby. Everything Jack and Dan did both pre and post 21 (50's) was RIGGED. Tic Tac Dough was Rigged with the goddamn secret category, the Bullseye was rigged ,even when Fred silverman Greenlighted Joker for CBS he caught Jack fooling around with the slots. Jack never made or mC'd an honest gameshow . he is a Bastard

  • @craftruth2009 Hey, you shut your mouth craftruth2009! How dare you call Jack Barry a BASTARD! This game WASN'T RIGGED at all....it's LUCK pure LUCK! In fact none of those games that you mentioned were RIGGED.

  • @Jokwilder ever see 21? jack barry was in on the scandal that put that show off the air. watch the movie quiz show.........

  • @craftruth2009 - Given how much Silverman hated game shows, if he'd really caught Barry "fooling around w/the slots", don't you think he would've pulled the show immediately? You're talking about a guy who, after someone won the grand prize in the very first Winner's Circle of The $10K Pyramid a year later, demanded that producer Bob Stewart stop tape, convinced the show was rigged b/c he thought no one could possibly solve all 6 categories in 42 seconds...no way he would've let that slide!

  • @Chiboy00

I'm pretty sure that Jack Barry and Dan Enright rigged the game show in the 50s. So you may be right...

  • @Chiboy00 Retard?

  • His suit looks like the seatcover to a '66 VW...classic.

  • Somewhere a thrift store has that suit.

  • Or eBay! ;)

  • Unbelievable!

  • The only thing.. if you look at Hal's digital score display on his podium.. immediately after he got the 3 jokers, his total went to $500 right away. However, he still had to answer the question to get there to win the game. Why was it displayed prematurely?

  • After the quiz show scandles of the 50's with Jack Barry's hosted Show Twenty One proven to be rigged, sending him into a 20 year banishment from TV hosting, when The Joker's Wild premiered in 1972 security was so intense that you could not even go to the bathroom alone.

Huge lessons in morals and ethics were learned after the 50's game show scandles, and everyone made a very conscious effort that everything you see is totally legit.

    This comeback was amazing!

  • I did Bill Cosby's revival of You Bet Your Life back in the 90s. They wouldn't let us go to the bathroom alone either.

  • Holy shit!!! That was amazing!

  • LOL Look at that guys suit! Man they're worn some strange outfits back then.

  • Hal looks so like Gabe Kaplan from Welcome Back Kotter fame.

  • Joker! JOKER! HAAAAAAAAAA Passes out.

  • I remember seeing this episode on GSN back around 2001-02. I had to lift my bottom lip off the floor afterward.

  • If this was a movie That would be Will Ferrell playing Hal!

  • Wow what an observation. I would go see that movie, because this was my favorite show growing up in the 70's.

  • I disagree.....John C. Reily would be the part. Just listen to the voice.

  • To say nothing of Christoper McDonald portraying Jack as he did in "Quiz Show."

  • lol hal looks like a combonation of meathead and john holmes

  • Wow that suit is loud!

  • That was rigged without a doubt. They wanted him to continue his winning streak!

  • If that was rigged, we'd know about this shortly after this aired.

Plus, they would never trust Jack again.

  • it wouldn't be jack's fault if it was rigged. I'm not saying it was rigged, but you never know with these old game shows...

  • Adrienne is soooo hot!! Beautiful smile and a good sport.

  • Jack was so great. His reaction was so amazing. He actually enhanced that moment.

  • This game is amazing. Hal Shear may be the luckiest contestant to ever play The Joker's Wild; if not a game show. It truly displays what this game is all about; knowledge & luck. That suit may be lucky but I wouldn't exactly rely on it all the time like some Deal Or No Deal contestant; Hal used his lucky charm for it's purpose & when it was nessecary. Adrinne was a very good sport about it to remain calm as it happened. This is one of the most memorable games of the Joker's Wild Ever!

  • You're soooo dumb.

  • I think it was rigged too. But was it? We'll never know that answer.

  • IT WASN'T RIGGED! Jack Barry would know never to do that after the scandals!

  • Even though Jack did a huge part in the scandels previous to this show, he still now knows never to 'pretend' again.

  • Once again..like some people have said: If this were rigged, this show would've been history and a lot of people would be headed to the slammer.

  • What a contrast in 70's fashion. Jack Barry could walk into anywhere in 2008 with that suit and haircut without anyone noticing, while the contestant would be laughed at and insulted.

  • After watching the movie "Quiz Show" it makes you wonder if it was rigged. Then again, if it happened naturally, I'll bet there would sill be a routine investigation anyway!

  • JOKER!! JOKER!!! GASP!!!!!!!

  • "JOKER, JOKER, & JOKER!!!!!" Amazing how Hal pulled THAT off!

  • yes i saw this on tv way back nice...

  • i demand an investigation-- that was fixed. lol, j/k.

  • that line is from mt's joker wild

  • Does anybody have this episode of The Joker's Wild? With Hal

  • Yes, I got it on DVD. If my DVD player will cooperate (since it starts jumping and sticking around the halfway point of any DVD, since it may be time for a newer DVD player), I will put it up in full.

  • Okay Thanks mtiller2006 appreciate it

  • I want a suit just like that!! LOL!!!

  • Were there any other cases of "miracle" three-joker wins like this in TJW's history (when a contestants spun three Jokers when it was the only thing that could have possibly saved them?)

  • Yes, it happened in 1983 when Joe Dunn spun three jokers to keep his winning streak going.

  • Probably the greasest win ever in Jokers Wild

  • YouTube: Where the 70s lives forever

  • this may be from the 80's!

  • "DON'T YOU EVER TAKE THAT SUIT OFF! EVER!"

    lol.

  • "FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!" Tell me about it. I'll would of said the same thing that Jack did.

  • I would have passed out!

  • WHODA THUNK IT?

  • I probably would've passed out too. I mean, like Jack asked, what are the odds of getting 3 Jokers AND nailing the question to win the game?

  • I don't know who was more surprised -- Hal or Jack. If I was in Hal's shoes and saw Jack react the way he did, The first words out of my mouth would've been, "Are you all right, Jack?"

  • That is the biggest spin of ALL time!

  • On what date was this episode first aired?

  • I saw Hal the other day, he's still wearing that suit and swears that Jack Barry tried to take it from him in a drunken rage.

  • I think it was the tie

  • A similar of clip of this was on YouTube (the user who posted it either closed his account or got suspended), but does anyone have the entire question that he nailed for the win?

  • Q)Name this world famous theater?

    A)Radio City Musical

  • No, that wasn't the entire question...that was only part of it.

  • Sweet Adrienne WAS a good sport. How she smiled through that, I don't know.

  • Try pausing during the spin...looks like the wheel was all jokers...

  • This clip shows how entertaining TJW truly was. However, that overstatement "I can't calculate the odds" was typical Jack Barry. 100,000:1, Jack? It was actually 26:1, and I'm quite sure he knew that.

A little background: Every third item on the wheels was a joker (category, category, joker), so on a single wheel, it was a 1 in 3 chance of getting a joker, and therefore a 1 in 27 (or 26:1) of getting three jokers.

  • Keep in mind it's the [conditional] odds 'when he needed it the most.'

    But you are right, though.

  • I am glad to have finally found out how that was set up! Thank you for this bit of info, but I have to ask: How did you know that about there being set in that fashion? looking at the way this is worded, does that mean that each wheel had the 5 categories and 4 jokers (9 spaces per wheel or 27 divided by 3= 9)?

  • How did you calculate the odds for Jack? That's amazing! Wow!

  • WOW! Jack Barry was shell-shocked when Hal got three jokers in all of the three windows on that spin.

  • I think jack was thinking "The network's gonna cancel us"

  • Then he thought "Oh yeah, we're in syndication now."

  • So did I. Oh man, Hal, I'll bet Jack will steal that 'lucky suit' of yours so you better watch out.

  • Thanks to GSN for replaying this episode I wisxhed that I would have taped it since this is one of my favorite moments that I have seen on this show ever.

  • Now there's a side of Jack Barry rarely seen. I wonder if Christopher McDonald saw this when it happened. He's the actor who played Jack Barry in the movie "Quiz Show."

  • GSN will probably play this episode on Friday's "Viewer's Choice Marathon". They do show it in the commercials.

  • If so, I can't wait to record it.

  • It was alrady shown on "Viewer's Choice"

  • can't beleve that that would be in tv history

  • Wow, I must agree with you dim432. It's amazing thing to see Hal and Jack both gone nuts. Hey, even I got shell-shocked watching that.

  • Miss Jack Barry he made show what Is

  • Sir u thinkin of Twenty-one no way joker wild cheated

  • This sho got busted for cheating

  • I wish I was old enough to remember this one. This was my favorite game show as well as Tic Tac Dough. Does anyone recall Joe Dunn from the 82-83 season? If so, does anyone have any tapes of this champ? One more question- I read that in 1983 Jack Barry forced Joe to retire after winning so much money. Can anyone tell me why that happened? Thak you.

  • I wish that GSN would replay all these old Joker's Wild shows soon

  • they might; the episode are currantly being converted from analog to dibibeta so they can air on cable tv

  • This game whas the bomb! Very fun to wath as a young kid. Even though the host looked like the devil on the game.

  • Don't he don't. He's a very nice man.

  • Actually, the Devil was modeled on a caricature of the host (or so it was said).

  • IT SURE LOOKS LIKE IT TO ME, THAT fUNNY! THANKS FOR THE REPLY.

  • Nearly everyone on this episode - especially the host - looks like they know what is going to happen next.

  • that was very exciting to watch. That was remarkable.

  • In 1978, almost a year into the show's syndicated run, he won 10 games, about $40,000 and was the biggest money winner on the show until he was surpassed the following year. That "Lucky Suit" became famous.

  • So In Other Words, he won 10 games and 2 cars.

  • Correct. Every Jack Berry show from that era rewarded contestants with 1 car every 5 wins. On Tic Tac Dough, over the course of nine weeks on the show in 1980, Thom McKee defeated 43 opponents, to win eight cars and take home $312,700 in cash and prizes, a record at the time.

  • Do you have any idea how many games Hal won?

  • At 1:36 Jack mentions this will be his "8th victory" (which of course Hal wins). I don't know how many he wins overall. Hal won a car after his 5th victory.

  • So In Other Words, he won 10 games and 2 cars.

  • 9 wins.

  • Oh man ieeeeeeeeeeeee, Hal became a legend with 9 wins in a row. Did he win some more or what? That's amazing to see him do that.

    :D

  • he won a 10th game (with a 2nd car) to pick up the record at the time, and then lost.
