  • Catchphrase shoul return! with Nick Weir!!

  • @HughBrian34 I agree with you!

  • I want it back

  • I want catchphrase back or itv are the rubbish channel in the world

  • When they put it on challenge i used to watch it. Love the theme tune and i want catchphrase back!

  • Lol casual spoilers.

  • This i'snt the original lol

  • It was a bit better with Mark Curry than with Nick Weir. Mainly because they didn't make Mark goon around in an embarrassingly sub-standard attempt to rip off Michael Barrymore.

But Catchphrase will always belong to Roy Walker. Just as Blockbusters to Bob Holness, or Bullseye to Jim Bowen.

  • Nick Weir and Mark Curry not a patch on Mr Catchphrase himself, Roy Walker.

  • Is That GSN?

  • I remember I grew up w/ this version of the show. I also remember when the announcer said "a man who cried when Simba's father died"

  • they killed him...

    Mr. Chips

    1986-1999

  • See I liked Nick Weir on Catchphrase, must just be me.

  • I'm going to throw a spanner in the works!! - I prefered Nick Weir's catchphrase more than Roy Walker's - but that was duely down to me being young when Roy Walker was on catchphrase

  • Comment removed

  • Thats the first time i got the opening titles...:S

  • great video, i loved catchphrase

  • Catchphrase will never be the same without Roy, where was Mr Chips, he was so cool and you can't have Catchphrase without Mr Chips!

  • The catchphrase theme clearly inspired Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys are Back in Town' solo!

  • 'the boys are back in town'???

did that not come out a good 10 years before catchphrase began? what's more, in 1976 even the short-lived original american version was still a distant memory.

unless of course u're joking - and if so it isn't a good joke...

  • or that purple/blue neon set. or those two massive TV screens that used to slowly spin round

  • This version was just a plae imitation of the original Roy Walker era.

  • Yup. Ther theme music for this edition was composed by Simon Etchell, who also did the 1993-1998 music. I have a clean evrsion of this theme and it sounds completely different.

  • catchphrase is nothing without roy waler

  • That is right! How COULD he leave? How COULD he?!?

  • they didnt chuck walker out, he left to do bigger & better things! But I am a great fan of catch phrase. my fave titles and set is the mid 90's one. i was only little when it was on, but i remember it well. and the new 2000's 1. i didnt like that one

  • The series I personally like is the Carlton series from 1994 to 1999 which was the series featuring the 'snake charmer' catchphrase where Mr. Chips looked like he was 'touching himself'.

I actually didn't like the original 1986 to 1992 TVS version much. It wasn't very sophisticated.

  • wasn't very sophisticated?

then i'm guessing u also prefer the 90s version of play your cards right to the 80s version...

  • Don't be brainwashed by what ITV say. Roy even admitted it himself that fateful morning when he appeared on The Big Breakfast soon after he left that he was effectively forced to leave by ITV - he left because ITV warned him beforehand that they would be forcing him to leave very soon - so he was forced to leave by them threatening that they would force him to leave!!!

The guy was even in tears on that morning when he was interviewed on The Big Breakfast!!!

  • rubbish!

  • GODDAMN IT ROY!!!!! Why did you have to leave?!?!?!

  • I feel the same but Phil Jupitus MADE him leave to revamp the show for the millennium.

  • i prefer the original theme

  • I don't. I prefer the 1994-1999 Carlton theme.

  • well why don't u at least respect the original TVS theme?

FYI, it was composed by the same guy who did the blockbusters theme...

  • he cried when Simba's dad died?

    fag

  • Why axe a good show????? Brad

  • The show was axed because people were complaining it wasn't as good without Roy Walker.

  • Because many viewers left the series due to them realising that the show was never as good without Roy and that black studio set used in the 1990s.

  • And also MR chips we are those random people??

  • Your right, they could easily bring him back and it would be the sucess it once was. I mean why not, tv's rubbish nowadays!

  • Think roy should come back. How can we contact him? Brad

  • Wouldn't Roy be a bit erm . . . seasoned to do this now?

  • I saw Roy dancing on BBC 1 year or 2 years ago. He not too old to be dancing at his age so he wouldn't be that old to be presenting again.

Why not bring back Roy, however if Cathphrase comes back, the show needs a decent production team.

  • Look in challenge television.

  • Rubbish, Catchphrase went seriously downhill after they replaced Roy Walker for "young blood". Roy is not to old to come back as a host for a revived Catchphrase besides his own Catchphrases are a legend..."riiiiiiigt", "its a good guess but is not riiiight", "here's a fifty pounder" "you're back in play" etc.

  • Mark I apologise for my ageist comment. I recently read on DigitalSpy that Roy would do catchphrase again if he was offered it, and I'd support said notion.

  • @Hoddersrevenge

How's that ageist? That's like using the word "black" and thinking you said something racist.

  • Catchphrase went down as one of the greatest gameshows when Walker hosted it but not when Weir or Currie hosted it. They tried to copy and make themselves into the limelight of Roy Walker.

  • when is catchphrase coming back on itv? Brad

  • Don't know.

  • If roy can do car park catchphrase and also a dvd game surely he would want to bring it back. Brad

  • I don't know why ITv or whomever got rid of Roy in the first place.

  • Phil Jupitus got rid of Roy, not ITV. He thought the show should have been revamped for the millennium. Stupid idiot (do NOT worry; I am not calling you whose user name is kyle2mild a stupid idiot, I'm saying Phil Jupitus is a stupid idiot just for throwing poor Roy out because of the millennium).

  • now i'd quite like to know WHERE u found out that phill jupitus was responsible for roy leaving catchphrase, and thought that it should be revamped for the new millennium...

  • Now I know Phil Jupitus WASN'T responsible for throwing out Roy; it said on Wikipedia he made an ANNOUNCEMENT that Roy was leaving Catchphrase but he DID leave because the show was being revamped for the millennium. That's what websites that give information on Catchphrase SAY.

  • it said on wikipedia, eh?

how do u know, then, that the user who put it in wasn't confused or mischievous?

cos from what i remember about the time of roy leaving catchphrase, i can't recall phill jupitus being mentioned in any way - unless of course i was elsewhere...

  • Blame Phil Jupitus. It's HIS fault Roy Walker left and was replaced by Nick Weir then Mark Curry.

  • Oh i Remembered this. Please could you upload the full episode?

  • We all cried when Simba's dad died. :(

  • Was this version of Catchphrase's theme done on a keyboard?

  • Probably used some sampling software too.

  • Hi scblack,

I saw Mark Curry in Last of the summer wine 2 weeks ago playing a science-fiction fan called Kevin did anyone else see it?

  • I saw Mark Curry in last sunday's Last of the Summer Wine playing a science-fiction fan called Kevin did anyone see it?

  • No I was too busy getting laid and living my life. However I did tape the Eastenders repeat so hopefully, fingers crossed I got me some Last of the Summer Wine too.

  • This version of Catchphrase's theme music is so out of tune it's not match for the original or the one that was used from 1994-1999.

  • The only Catchphrase theme music I personally like is the one that was used from 1994-1999; it was WAY better than the theme music used for when Nick Weir and Mark Curry presented it and was more sophisticated than the original.

  • To be fair Mark Curry is a good presenter. Although you can't beat Mr Walker in this role. Much better than Nick Weir!

  • Well, Nick Weir will always be best remembered for falling down some steps and breaking his leg on his first show.

  • To cultguy and deselmes, Nick Weir and Mark Curry are RUBBISH hosts! Only Roy Walker was a good presenter.

  • I never said Nick Weir was a good host - in fact I thought he was a bit crap too, especially compared to Roy. Mark Curry, meanwhile, was better on Blue Peter.

  • Mark Curry was a good host actually.

  • Yes, his catchphrase being "I don't have a catchphrase". He was OK, but with the scrapping of Mr CHips and ROy Walker by now Catchphrase was dead.

  • Roy Walker had a MUCH better sense of humour than that IDIOT Mark Curry. HOW DARE THEY DO THIS TO CATCHPHRASE!

  • shermanvermin, Nick Weir had an even worse sense of humour. In the episode after he broke his leg - "Crutchphrase". *groans*

  • HE WAS NOT. ROY WALKER was a good host and think again if you think that cretin who never even bothers to give out his date of birth Nick Weir was a good host.

  • Bring back Roy Walker and Mr Chips :(
