As a bartender for 19 years, I want to say thank you for your reply. It's not a black thing or a white thing. It's a respect thing. I am your server, not your servant. I'm just there to make a living. If someone don't want to or can't afford to pay for service (TIP), then pick up a pizza and a 6 pack and eat at home. As much as I would like to, I don't have the money to go to Capitol Grill, Le Bec Fin or Blue Martini so I don't.
Also regardless of how much u get as a tip they tax you as if u got a 15% tip regardless at the end of the night...whether your tips add up to 5% of your total sales or 20% of your total sales they tax 15% so some nights are better than others...and i know how frustrating a bad night is cuz its like u go to work to lose money smdh

I'm glad that not everyone is like Sharece and has common sense. Most people don't understand how tipping works but if you worked in the service industry you have a pretty good grasp on it. I think they should have a food service etiquette class in school so people don't go around looking as stupid as her.
the sad fact of the matter is that waitstaff makes on avg $2.13 hr. the US gov't places a tax of %15 on our wages. so if you leave $3 on a $30 check after we tip out our busser/hosts/bartenders etc we pretty much paid out of our pockets to wait on you on top of the fact we dont even see that $2.15/hr since that gets taken for taxes. that pay scale wouldn't fly in any other workplace! on top of the attitudes we get from the general public it's not just a tip-it's hazard pay!
this is a great response. i couldn't stand watching that other lady. i worked as a server for over a year, and i worked very hard to make sure each table had great service, and getting bad tips is like being told, "You did a bad job." And I didn't. It is common decency to reward a person for waiting on you: we get paid by YOU, not the restaurant, because we do everything YOU tell us to do.

Hey man Amiel, like your vids and all, but gotta disagree here. You're saying that $8 tip isn't enough, but the $2.50 that she gets from the restaurant is. The fact is if waiters/waitresses didn't rely on tipping, the restaurants would be paying a lot more per hour than they are. So basically, the restaurants are unfairly putting the customers on the spot.
The reason tipping is up to the customer is they are the ones who can best judge if the service deserved a good tip. Unfortunatly ignorant people take advantage of this system and dont tip even when it is rightfully deserved.We rely only on tips our two dollars an hour goes to taxes my check is zero every week. If i was paid by the hour my employer would raise the price of food to compensate for my salary so essentially your still paying a tip its just hidden in the price of food.
Also this system works to the customers benefit... if i was paid by the hour i could be as lazy as i want getting ur refill will no longer be a priority to me because im getting paid by the hour and have no incentive to really impress u since u no longer control my pay. Ever been to a mcdonalds? they are paid by the hour how would u like ur service at a 5 star restaurant to be the same.
A tip is a percentage commission based on sales assuming adequate performance. I have worked waiting tables, I also eat out a lot, I will not tip a shitty server tha same as a passable to good server. So no they are not entitled, it is an implied "conditional" social contract.
Having worked in the service industry (at least in the south) more blacks tip badly than tip properly. In my experience a black server will tell you this just as quickly as a white/latino one.

In conclusion, tipping is a privilege, not a right.

If every restaurant in the country decided to add 20% to the bill for the tip, they could do so. BTW I'm a transplanted American living in Europe - one of the things people comment on is how GREAT the service is on their American trips. Waitstaff in Germany & Austria get a living wage, medical insurance, retirement benefits, maternity benefits, etc. But the service here is desultory at best. I've been told by people in the business that the customer is the one who wants something so HE/SHE is the one who has to be nice! I'll pay 15% any day for fast, good, friendly, American service.

I've been stiffed on a $140 check before where they just decided to leave me nothing. So I can completely understand his frustration. The situation may not of been handled in the best way, but tipping is really about being courteous and understanding all waiter's and waitress's do to supply you good service.

Hey man Amiel, like your vids and all, but gotta disagree here. You're saying that $8 tip isn't enough, but the $2.50 that she gets from the restaurant is. The fact is if waiters/waitresses didn't rely on tipping, the restaurants would be paying a lot more per hour than they are. So basically, the restaurants are unfairly putting the customers on the spot.

The reason tipping is up to the customer is they are the ones who can best judge if the service deserved a good tip. Unfortunatly ignorant people take advantage of this system and dont tip even when it is rightfully deserved.We rely only on tips our two dollars an hour goes to taxes my check is zero every week. If i was paid by the hour my employer would raise the price of food to compensate for my salary so essentially your still paying a tip its just hidden in the price of food.

A tip is a percentage commission based on sales assuming adequate performance. I have worked waiting tables, I also eat out a lot, I will not tip a shitty server tha same as a passable to good server. So no they are not entitled, it is an implied "conditional" social contract.
Having worked in the service industry (at least in the south) more blacks tip badly than tip properly. In my experience a black server will tell you this just as quickly as a white/latino one.

If customers were satisfied with the service that they received, then they should tip. If they were not happy with the service, then they have a right to refuse to tip. Sometimes it is an oblligation, for example, when gratuity is added for a party of 6 or more or in a hotel for room service 20% is automatically added whether the service is good or not. If every restaurant in the country decided to add 20% to the bill for the tip, they could do so. But since most restaurants want to motivate servers to give good service, it remains optional( Lucky for cheap and ignorant people)

As often as she mentioned Taco Bell and other cheap places, you know she doesn't get out to anyplace fancy very frequently, so I can only imagine how nasty she was to the staff during her one big meal out. BTW I'm a transplanted American living in Europe - one of the things people comment on is how GREAT the service is on their American trips. Waitstaff in Germany & Austria get a living wage, medical insurance, retirement benefits, maternity benefits, etc. But the service here is desultory at best. I've been told by people in the business that the customer is the one who wants something so HE/SHE is the one who has to be nice! I'll pay 15% any day for fast, good, friendly, American service.

OK, first of all I fully understand why the server would want a bigger tip. But, last time I checked, a tip was optional. It's not REQUIRED that you give at least a 15% of what the bill was tip. The customer is not obligated to give you a tip. All they really want is their food, so they pay for their food.
ANYWAY, I personally would have given more than an $8 tip, c'mon now, but that lady was not obligated to give a tip period.

I've been stiffed on a $140 check before where they just decided to leave me nothing. So I can completely understand his frustration. The situation may not of been handled in the best way, but tipping is really about being courteous and understanding all waiter's and waitress's do to supply you good service.

sherese is a crasy girl, i dont support wat she did on cam. i think its the restaurants responsibility to pay their workers. i worked in a fine dine restaurant before, i got tips sometimes but i never stalked the customers for tips and i think its wrong to pay for your food and then pay the waiter or waitress to do their job. if i think they did a good job then i will leave a tip. i dont think customers are responsible for paychegues.ameil, i get u but i live in canada and jamaica its different.

i totally agree! at a MINIMUM $16 shoul've been left. I think if you can't afford to leave atleast 10-15% for good service then you can't afford to eat there. now he was wrong in customer service he sould never do that. but that doesn't justify being cheap. between four people you should be able to come up with a decen tip.
