I only recently heard the Yum Yums cover of New York City on their CD "Whatever Rhymes With Baby". I''ve been a fan of Cub for years but somehow missed or forgot about this song. I think I like the original better too! Lisa has such a sweet voice. This video gives me such deja vu. Thanks!
I first heard this song on "Factory showroom", I loved the song, found out it was a cover, I think i prefer this version, never heard of cub before...
Part of being masculine is being confident and secure with your sexuality. A real man will have no qualms in admitting that he likes music like this. It's the insecure manchildren who will go out of their way to claim that they are too manly for certain things.
Really great song! I love how there's no pretense or posturing - it's not hip, the musicianship is amateurish, but... IT'S INCREDIBLE. The lyrics are so good, and the performance is so exuberant. This song makes me feel It's a little bittersweet in spots, it's insanely cheery throughout. It's also really great to see a group of women who are neither conforming to what female artists are "supposed to be," nor trying to imitate men. Music could use more REAL femininity. That is, humanity.
@SoulMusic121 I saw her with Buck several years ago, and she had a smile on her face the whole time. I've never seen anyone so happy to be on stage singing.
I wish more pop punk was this happy! I love ironic happy pop punk-like MTX-but its so rare to hear lyrics that are as happy as the music! ( a couple of examples would be the "do you wanna dance" cover by the Ramones and "I have a Date" by the Simpletones and later the Vandals.
A friend of mine met Robynn (Cup) and Neko recently in a San Fran bookstore. They're still best friends apparently. She said she sees them together around town alot. lucky!
ah! so good! i've never been able to find this album. all i have is an old bootleg with the first half of the recording. this is the first time i've ever heard the full song!
I'm glad that They Might Be Giants covered this song. Because if they didn't I would have never found out about Cub. They're one of the bands on the top of my list now.
The first and sadly the only time I saw Cub... Cambridge Ma the Middle East Downstairs, with the Queers and the Mr. T Experience... one of the greatest shows I've ever seen!
Around the time the Pep 7" came out, Valeria let everyone know she wasn't interested in touring or the usual rock 'n' roll stuff so Neko stepped in to do touring duties of Spring '93. (Check out the Nicholas Bragg video for Neko...)
This to me is a straight forward (lyrics wise) song about love between a couple. TMBG rarely if ever has straightforward lyrics about love, or anything. This song when sung by TMBG is therefore misplaced. Most people I think dont notice since they dont know the lyrics and just hear a peppy song with Ny landmarks and put it to a catogory of song with Mammal or Blood Machine. This song just seems like it was written by women, and I like it better sung in the original cub.
I sorry, WTF? "Seems like it was written by women?" Oh I'd love you to attempt to explain that one.
And anyway, anyone who is actually a fan of TMBG knows that their version of this song is a cover, and they do write songs with straight forward lyrics... Racist Friend, Lucky Ball and Chain... etc.
@Hypnotoad27 too bad they weren't talented enough to write it. OH! That just happened. j/k I like the original. TMBG is a great band, but their cover doesn't come close to Cub's original.
Thanks to the uploader! I watched this video at their old web site a few years ago and am happy to see it again. I prefer the original. IMO Lisa Marr is much cuter than the John's hahaha.
'version'? you can prefer whichever recording you want, but TMBG's recording is the only 'version' here- cub created new york city! theirs is not a 'version'- there is a big difference between creating something and re-creating it...
Thank you! It really annoys me when people compare covers with originals and acts as if the original is some kind of "copy". I like the TMBG version a lot, but really do prefer the original.
@obliquestrategies66 you're right. this one is completely the original, while TMBG's version is just a cover. that said I prefer the cover to the original.
it's ANYTHING but insipid. this version's awesome as hell too, but aren't you being a little hard on TMBG for just doing a cover? i love both versions.
I like both versions too. I just happen to like the original more. Neither is "better" than the other. Obviously Cub's original is how it's suppose to sound. I appreciate that TMBG has returned to the original line in their live shows: "Empire State where King Kong lived" from their album version "Dylan lived".
I remember seeing Cub in Salt Lake when they opened for TMBG. God bless cub. I bought there Come Out Album just for this song. Clearly better than the cover by TMBG -- which screws up some of the lyrics!
As many others, I had never heard of this song before TMBG covered it, but now that I found it, it clearly stands out as a good pop song on its own merit.
It just occurred to me to look up the original version of this song (that is, this one). I guess I just like the energy that TMBG put into their cover more than this version.
I love Lisa Marr

The best thing about this video is Lisa Marr's goofy fucking grin the entire time. I wish bands today had as much fun as this band.
