Its the late 60's, early morning, getting ready for school at Lytle Creek Elementary in San Bernardino, California, southern california,, my mom played this album almost every morning, and she would be happy. I loved to see her happy. She's 91 now and when I hear it, it takes me back to those simpler times.
Great to see the legend, Glen Campbell get the credit he richly deserved on the 2012 Grammy's! This super talented musician, singer, and songwriter has left a legacy of music that will transcend to one generation to another generation because it simply is that ...good!
...I remember I was 10 years old leaving and moving from southern California in '76 to my parents beloved Texas and hearing my Pops, my Uncle Bob who helped us with the U-haul singing this tune and telling myself how much I was going to hate leaving the Pacific for the plains of Texas and facing the realization I would have to listen to country music. Well, 36 years displaced and I find myself humming this tune and loving Texas. Thanks Glen for a short walk down memory lane..time sure flies. : [
This ,Tune is the One; [if back then there was a walkman or Ipod,]- I,Would Ride off on my Horse .This, song keeps company with all encompassing emotion from any age , and still Holds a Profound place in and of The American Songbook...
I don't give a RATS ASS who wrote it, I just LOVE that Glenn sang it!!! My dad, in his 80's now, rates this as one of his all time favs. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!!! LOVE YOU DAD!!!
who care's which one wrote the song, it is a great old country song that i grew up and to this day i still listen to great songs like this that help me get through my days, when i can sit back and rember when there was a time when things were a lot easyer and a lot cheaper.
One Of My Favorite Glen Campbell Songs Ever. I Would Love To Listen To His New Album Ghost On The Canvas. I Felt Scared That Glen Campbell Has Alzheimer's Disease. But His Music Lives On Permanently. This Will Be My Permanent Favorite Song.
Have always hated country music but Glen is the exception, great guitar player sings with volume, emotion and soul, unlike the bland monotone sounds the same country.
He was a great performer - saw him in Lake Tahoe - he came out on stage singing this song and came to our table to shake hands with a man who couldn't see well. Wonderful performance!!!
I'm here because my belts on my B&O turntable needs belts.Otherwise,I'd listen to the LP.Also listening to Glen because I can't make it to his show tomorrow night at Black Bear Casino.LONG LIVE GLEN CAMPBELL!!!
Thanks for posting this great old Glen Campbell song written by John Hartford. It's the 1st adult song my 1 year old grandson (who is 6 now) ever requested I replay and replay and replay. ha ha
Glen is going to TRY to tour..... great article in Sep. 1st issue of Rolling Stone (#1138) with Glen knowing that he knows yet doesn't know what's happening.
Sad, but inspiring. And his NEW cd is quite awesome. Really.
And I'm a Zeppelin and Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd fan.
this song always reminds me of when my grandmother always use to tell me, always rember where you come from. to this day i still rember her telling me that like it was yesterday.
Took the love of my life (Kathy) to see Glen at the old Melodyland (a venue "in the round") in Anaheim, California during the summertime of 1968 ~ a great concert. It's heartbreaking to know what Glen and his family are going thru these days. Here's to you Glen, for all you & your music have meant to so many people for so many years.
through cupped hands round a tin i pretend to hold you to my breast and find .................a song that imposes scent, touch, color, albeit black and white, and a conviction of guilt in our failed relationships.....brilliant glen,,,brilliant
@dkstryker , I never knew Elvis sang this song. This Glen Campbell version is the only one I've heard, and I've heard it many, many, many times over the course of many, many years.
Glen Campbell started out as a songwriter/guitar player. After he wrote this song, he went to pitch it to another singer. He didn't know he was being recorded while he was singing it to them. They ended up releasing Glen's recording which was done in one take.
Nobody writes songs of this caliber anymore. The lyrics and the tune are true masterpieces. Clearly, Glen Campbell was the perfect choice to sing this remarkable song. It remains a personal favorite for my father. Thank you so much for posting it.
Even if you hate R&B, "Strawberry Letter 23" from the early 70's has lyrics comparable to this amazing masterpeice. In both songs, someone was reaching for something approaching the heights and power of poetry, not just a gimmicky hit. I know I'm black, but "Honky Tonk Heroes" gives me goosebumps too. I was raised to hate country but I found George Strait's "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" album and it cured me of a lot of things. You country folks kick ass!! Your really do.
glen dont let anything get in your way, you done it great job young man, you are Arkansas guitar legend. hang in there keep playing that old guitar ,rod says also John Denver would also agree with me.You went and proved that you did it your way Glen and it great. you have influenced alot of people, so you love playingthat old guitar, you have always been damn good at whaed to do entertain the people you will always have that . so just keep on picking and grinning glen

John Hartford wrote it. Glenn Campbell sings the heck out of it. But go check out Aretha Franklin's version....yes, she does a really different version on her album "Soul 69". A great song stands up to many interpretations. Now if someone would just convince Aretha to tap dance while singing and playing the banjo the way John Hartford did.....
Ouça as duas versões e compare!
Noone writes like this anymore. The lyrics are astounding! Mr. Campbell was perfect for this masterpeice. Hearing him sing this song is a gift I'm forever thankful for. Thankyou.
Magic, talent is no longer in music..this reminds me it once use to exist...great marriage of lyrics and a tune....(was never a fan of country; now I am ) wish we had more song writers...songs we will want to hear years after they were hits....anything recently anyone really wants to hear 20 years later???
Mr. Glen,in a previous life,in my rear-view mirror, when I played in bars, lounges, and restaurants...sang this one while my buddy played banjo and I played his Martin steel string. Felt so blessed when the prime time band praised us for performing "Today Is Mine" (written by Jerry Reed...aka Jerry Hubbard). Glen fans...please check out "I Remember You" and "Mull of Kintyre" (by Glen but written and also recorded by Paul McCartney)...Tunesmith09
what a talented guy ..... i don't even like country that much, but always like glen ..... he just had that certain thing that i can't explain .... lyrics great too ..... and i don't even care for them very much in most songs. too bad the hooch affected his future talent!
@47tooter ........ i miss old benny ..... slappin that bald guy on the head all the time ....... especially like when they played "bonnie and clyde" ..... or ..... spoof of "charlie's angels" ...... hillarious!
I had no idea this gem of a song even existed until I ran into it on a for-promotion-only disc by Brian Setzer, performing it in a very blue-grassy style on a German radio station back in 2001.

I had no idea this gem of a song even existed until I ran into it on a for-promotion-only disc by Brian Setzer, performing it in a very blue-grassy style on a German radio station back in 2001.

It reminds me of Walt Whitman poetry.
