It later turned out that there were several protuding bolts that faced the gas tank. When hit from behind these bolts would puncture the tank. We had three people that got killed here in Austin Texas while getting hit from the rear.

I remember Johnny Carson saying that epic daredevil Evel Knievel was going to try his most dangerous stunt - Driving a Ford Pinto with Firestone 500 radials. (They were famous for falling apart at speeds while new)
