Cutting Monk Fish

Not a bad first time cutting a Monk tail, with a dull knife,I was a scallop fisherman from Nova Scotia (Digby) , going back at it in the new year, and have done alot worse than that trying to cut tails, so good job , it also blew me away to hear you are getting 3$ a pound , when I left Digby 10 years ago I think we were getting 75 cents a pound ,anyhow cant wait to get back at it , I am wishing you and your crew the best of fishing , and to all the haters and whiners, just try doing the job !!!!

why are all those monkfish wasted like that? Yes I read that they are incidental to your scallop fishing but would not someone buy them from you when you get in if you took care of them and did not let them lay on the deck in the sun? That is not responsible at all.

i never even knew there was such a fish like this, i think it's awesome that you're well educated in your field. you know, it's so easy for people to just look at a fisherman and think "they're a slave" or "they're stupid" but you really prove them wrong, i can tell by the description you wrote above that you know what you're talking about, care a great deal about animal life and are a decent human being. keep up the good work :) don't let these fools get you down

With that logic they should keep the guts in the fish too, because getting rid of something that spoils within a few hours is wasteful

Like I said, go fishing for a month so you can see what it's like. It's so much easier to say what you "should" or "shouldn't" do when you're sitting behind a computer monitor with no experience with the fishing industry.

I'm simply saying that it is rather wasteful. If you wanted to preserve it, all you need to do is refrigerate it or store it in ice.

Obviously ice melts, but there are ways of preventing fermentation. There are also ways to be less wasteful, and throwing half the fish overboard isn't one of them.

Is that Potrock guy serious? I may have issues with SOME types of animal killing but fishing is free game. We've been fishing up different kinds of fish to eat for as long as we've been next to a body of water. I don't think there is anything wrong with killing a fish, taking it's good parts, and tossing the rest back to the sea.

Monkfish liver is the most expensive part of the fish, it is made into pates like foie gras. However, I am not sure if he is even keeping that when he cuts it up. And it is disturbing for me to see the filthy condition where they process the fish and scallops.

in reply, we didn't care about monk fish. we were out for scallops and took maybe 150 lbs of monk fish tail, really they just go to waste on the boat. this was the first time i'd been asked to do this and the knife was real dull as you can probably see.
