although love is unpredictable for carmen, it is still sweet and exciting and worth teasing or pursuing, and not 'just that' or 'oh, well...' like ewing's acting makes it to be. there is sensuality but certainly some curiosity still, not a wisdom or knowingness that older women would have. just my opinion on one of the greatest carmens ever.

sorry i love maria ewing and she interprets the heart and words of this song/aria incredibly well, but not entirely in character. 15 yr old carmen may be precocious and considered an 'experienced' woman in those times, but i would imagine her body language less of an older woman who's seen it all like ewing makes it to be, almost like a 'madam' -- carmen's take on love, would not be 'been here done that', but playful and speculative still.

I confess I was never crazy about the opera Carmen...UNTIL I saw Maria sing it. Brava! I love that feisty acting...the Habanera is superb! She doesn't posess some of the beauty of tone other mezzos do, but her acting total artistry make up for any of that. Brava, Maria!

Well, remember that singing is different from talking, too. Sometimes some words you have to not pronounce them different but place the vowel or consenant in some other way so you can hit the high or low notes.

I'm sorry the nasalisation is not writen in the score, I checked. I thought you were talking of something else when she singing that part.

She has to do it just to connect her "chest voice" to her "head voice", all the aria is written on the break of the voice,the passagio, it's just very difficult to sing it "equally" and to make it sound in a huge theater if you don't do that.
