As a ska man....this version is dynamite.....stands on its own easy...just different from the Slickers....same demographic, same soul, different shade..thats all.
like the sunshine mix a little more....but always enjoyable.. saw him a number of times years back.but he started getting a little too preachy and political..still probably one the most talented and under appreciated singer songwriter to come along in a while
@Tracey1963 I think that you will find that a brilliant Jamaican band the Slickers were first. I stand to be corrected nonetheless check it out. Pax Tracey XX
@wobbly585 I don't know anything about the Slickers, but I will give them a listen! Thanks!! First of all, I am going to listen to Steve Earle doing the tune, because it has been 3 months since I have even been to the site to listen to him or anyone else..
@wobbly585 Hey..I did listen the the Slikers..I liked it, but I must say l like Steve better....I really like the song Dead Flowers by the STones..I recommend it...
@Tracey1963 tracey, Steve did an incredible "Dead Flowers," that is one of my favorites, but then Steve has never really done much that i did not love.
Great Tune and a Great cover , I heard that this song is a little bit the same as" I fought the Law" ? This version can be found on Steve Earle's "Sidetracks" CD.
This TOTALLY ROCKS!!! I am a loving fan of Steve Earle anyway, but this is bad... I have already watched it 3xs... I'm glad he & Allison hooked up, what a great thing for them. Best wishes to you Steve!
What a score for V-Roys fans as well! Thanks for posting this. I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of sharing these with V-Roys fans on the V-Roys myspace page!
Thanks for posting this Rich! I had no idea it existed. Do you have any other Steve/V-Roys clips? I think they did this same song on Late Night With Conan O'Brien in April of '97. Hope you're doing well.
A young Scott Miller here! Love this.

@psrrsp That's the "Sunshine mix" I prefer the "Hillbilly mix" off the Steve Earle & the V-Roys Single CD. Good stuff.

The V-Roys were one of the great secrets of the 90's. Scott Miller & The Commonwealth carry on ...

Taj Mahal doing a cover version of this Jimmy Cliff classic is definitely better than Jimmy's original!!!! if you haven't, do check it out. Cheers!!!

Taj is cool.
This isn't a Jimmy Cliff song though. It's by the Slickers, who were a mysterious one-hit wonder that nobody knows anything about.
