That Gloria Jean is sure a doll! I guess she and Fields got along pretty well when they were shooting the film, according to Gloria. She said that she and her mother were invited over to Field's house many times, and that he was kind and gentle..... nothing like his public image.
Actually the friend whom Fields told he was looking for loopholes was the writer Gene Fowler. Maybe it should have been Barrymore but unfortunately Mr. B. was gone by then himself. One day my father was sitting up at Errol Flynn's. The afternoon sun was setting, casting an orange-glow in Errol's living room. My father suddenly notice a bright yellow stain on the coach where he was sitting. Inquiring what it was, Errol told him, "I'll never have that cleaned, sport. John Barrymore peed there".
The blonde, Susan Miller, sure was a hot little number. I'm amazed she wasn't in a lot more movies. She must have learned to say NO!, to some very important producers and directors.
W.C.'s girlfriend once asked him if he minded being called an S.O.B. "Listen!" he said. "If it weren't for S.O.B.s, nothing would ever get done in this world!" AMEN!
Heyyyy! That blonde girls mother is Margaret Dumont. Shes the woman that played in most of the Marx Brothers movies. She always played the rich widow who Groucho always hit on for her money.
This is a VERY funny film. Fields knew it would probably be his last starring film (it was), so boy did he let the film industry have it! Get the whole film and you will see.
Also, big kudos to Gloria Jean. The chemistry between her and Fields is genuine (he was very fond of her), and Gloria plays her part with real spunk. Plus, she was pretty damn cute!
Fields spent his last weeks in a hospital, where a friend stopped by for a visit and caught Fields reading the Bible. When asked why, Fields replied, "I'm checking for loopholes"
@7rays The friend was John Barrymore, another famous Hollywood lush who once, when playing Henry the Fifth, recited the line, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse." At that point a drunk in the balcony laughed and Barrymore said, "Never mind. Just saddle yon ass!"
I would do anything to be marooned in the nest with here. Could you imagine? That's the thing, WC adored beautiful young women and always had one in all his movies.
Romulus and Remus. On the plane: Fields, with hangover:" I feel like the two headed boy in the circus." Stewardess: Can I get you a Bromo?" Fields: "No, I couldn't stand the noise."
"My Little Chickadee" was another great WC Fields movie. It was the second most popular film of 1940 after "Gone With the Wind"...which I didn't find all that funny.
That WONDERFUL kissing blonde is a friend of mine, Susan Miller, and she STILL is a beauty!! She lives in Florida, and is a sweet lady with great stories to tell!! Ben.
You are right, she would be fun to interview!! She does have some great stories about going to school with Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and how Cary Grant used to pinch her butt in the hallway when she walked by!! I will ask her and let's see what happens!! Thanks, Ben.

Best American humorist, besides Mark Twain. No one can match Bill Fields, not then, not now.

If that gorgeous babe has never seen a man before in her life, I guess she must dress like that to impress the local squirrels.

I've always thought that this is one of Fields best, funny and completely surreal pictures. Pure startlingly funny genius from first frame to last.

Please encourage her, it would be a real treat and a gift to fans of classic comedy!
