I am so saddened of the death of my favorite actor of all time. Paul thank you so much for the great movies and especially my favorite character, Fast Eddie Felson. One day, we'll play some pool...for a $1000 a game.
"Who did you ever care about?... You're a loser. 'Cause you're dead inside. And you can't live unless you make everything else dead around you...The price is too high... We both know that's not true. She lived, she died." Amazing scene. RIP Paul.
What a great scene, Paul Newman was such a great actor, and every interview you watch you just get chills when he answers questions with such character. Would have loved to meet the man, wish there was still more people like him in hollywood.
One of the best final scenes in this movie. May the heavens bless Mr. Paul Newman. A treasured actor lost but, his movies will live...forever! Rest In Peace Paul Newman. You will be greatly missed!
Such a badass movie. Great pool skills from both actors, tremondous acting ability from the whole cast, I think, and such style from all the characters. Truly a great time well represented
One of the best. Mr Paul Newman, your screen magic changed my life--I truly understood what great acting means when I first saw this and you many other great films. RIP.
A true genius, philanthropist, and good soul. Thanks for posting this snippet, which is a testament to the power of his talent. A true original who will never be forgotten by pool players and so many more.
newman didnt do any of his own shots here, but gleason did all of his, he had been playing since a kid and could have been a pro if he had chosen to be
Gleason, as Fats, knows he's a painted bird in a cage. He's trapped, he knows it, and he's accepted it. He's seen Burt destroy too many men, too many guys with the talent to hang w/ him, to give him a real game, and he's lost hope that anyone can stand up to Burt. So just become like me, he says, we'll be caged birds together, living w/o hope, but with our hands still attached.
One of the best films ever made. And it's not really about pool. It's about character - Not Bert Gordon's idea of it but, true character. Without character, winning has no meaning. With character, a man or woman "wins" no matter what the final score of any game might be. In this scene, Eddie openly defies Bert and also mocks him for "playing it safe". Eddie then sinks the one ball with an "unsafe" shot and then, again, defies Bert by saying to him, "How Can I lose?" He can't. He's now a winner.
When I was 18 some friends and I walked in to that pool hall (Ames, in NYC) to play some. No sooner we entered someone approaches us & asked if anyone wanted to play for money.
We declined and played on a table upstairs, on the balcony. That was shortly after the film was made. Hustlers all over the place.
bert, superbly played by scott, is satan. to me no other screen villian has filled me with so much emotion. fast eddie....the pain. jackie gleason.......the great one. this is one of the cinemas best scenes. a winner to say the least.
Does anyone know how the real Minnesota Fats (not Jackie) got his nickname? Unfortunatly he is a lost icon. He is true proof that slender fingers and agility is not needed for excellence.
Minnesota Fats' real name was Rudolph Wanderone, he was from New York. He says he used to go by "New York Fats" before this movie, but he admits that he took the name "Minnesota Fats" after Gleason's character in Tevis' book, and that became his persona for the rest of his life.
How would you watch it if you were stranded on an island, with only ten movies, when you could have said, 10 movies and a home entertainment system. still, I see what you mean, My pool name is left hand luke.
I call myself that because my middle name is lucas, I'm good at pool with my left better than my right, and it refrences cool hand luke that paul newman was in who was in the hustler. goes together well eh?
Gleason, Scott, Laurie, and especially Newman, they all deserved Oscars. This is one of the five greatest American movies ever made. Without CGI effects, without nudity, without color. A pure movie.
Colour 'o Money is as good as it's going to get. Tom Cruise already played a part similar to that of P. Newman in this film and he's clearly the only one that was suitable for the role, so that's that, baby. Don't wait around for another version of The Hustler!
The Color of Money is a continuation of Fast Edd y and not a remake of The Hustler. He is the same character all those years later, I thought that was made pretty obvious hehe. ;)
I liked the book versions of The Hustler and The Color of Money. In the book version of The Color of Money Walter Tevis (the author) showed Eddie as a broke and washed up pool player who lost his pool hall due to a divorce. The whole book was about Eddie's redemption. There were no hotshot kid like Tom Cruise, in the story.
"I am shootin pool fats, when I miss you can shoot" one of many classic lines in a classic film. No elaborate sets ,just great acting, dialogue, production, and music score! It doesn't get any better!!!!
That shots and alot of the other trickshots in the movie were actually played by Willie Mosconi, who was 15x World Pocket Billiards Champion and the technical advisor for the movie.
Awesome movie and definitely a timeless classic, top rating always.
Another example of two great performances (Gleason and Scott) cancelling each other out in the oscar voting which allowed George Chakiris to win, sad.
They both played with cues made by Herman Rambo. In the color of money Paul Newman gave Tom Cruise a cue he "called" a Balabushka. It was actually a cue made by Joss Cues Ltd - a production model called the N-7. You can still buy this cue for around $500 from Joss. Gleason was a very good straight pool player. Willie Mosconi did the majority of the shots in that movie when you see the run-outs but not who is actually shooting them.
It was said that Jackie Gleason was able to run 80 balls in a game of straight pool. The actors played for money, and Paul Newman paid up in pennies lol.
That's right, the pool playing between Paul and Jackie, were actually money matches, there were 3/4 games played, the first few were for like a dollar, in which Paul won all, untill then Jackie suggested raising to $250 in the last game and he cleaned the table :) lol
In thinking about it, "The Hustler was the perfect title for this movie and the cast selection was right on the money :)
In my opinion "The Hustler" depicted Paul Newman at his best. To prepare for the role he actually hung around pool halls watching the local hustlers. The book version of The Hustler is even better. This has to be my all time favorite movie,Im a pool junkie, and play every day,so this movie,is right up there with the best of them, ever and all time!!!
You know what's weird?? I had to watch this movie on DVD widescreen before I realized that thy're all playing STRAIGHT pool! No 8-ball, no 9-ball, no nothin'! Just straight old school pool...
And I giotta say... only a great director and cast could make that game interesting! LOLOL
only paul could act out a climax like this one, i love this film what a great ending.
