There are some really stupid people these days... ITS not just any toy, it's a therapeutic robot designed and intended for senior users. Research studies show that this robot can reduce stress level for seniors, create interaction, improve psychological effects, improve brain functions, and relief Dementia and Alzheimer's. It's also a companion who will be there to comfort the user... unlike some people who probably won't visit their parents when they get older! Sad, ain't it?
I dont know how this is creeping people out! This is truly heart warming. These people have lost things dear to them like pets and family and just need one last source of love before they depart. They understand the reason behind this adorable robotic seal, but if I died I wouldn't want to leave behind my pets as well --especially if I was alone.
This was shockingly moving... and the last few lines spoken by the widow (now living alone) were profound. I am really surprised by the important ideas (not to mention feelings) that the existence, and use of this "toy" brings up.
It aint a toy. it's a therapy robot seal! gosh... calm down.
it wont be abused, and it wont be neglected. and plus this thing is mostly meant for the elderly. they feel less lonely with them. SO CALM UR NUTS . . .
It's so sad that there are people that actually treat this toy as a creature with a soul. These old people said that Paro responds to their talking. They choose to overlook the fact that Paro's responds are just pre-programmed moves and sounds, and nothing more. Paro is just a great toy, nothing compared to real pets or real people.
It really depends on the perspective one takes: Is it "sad" that people anthropomorphize objects, or is it merely human to do so? This brings up myriad other questions on what it means to be human, what IS consciousness, and really, what is "life"? In just a couple of decades there will be much more "wiggle room" when machines we've been developing do acquire consciousness... but, what sort of consciousness will it be?
@niva2gr It's a therapy tool which has no needs other than being charged and not being broken. Pets are great but there is so much responsibility that comes with another living creature.
Aww; I'd buy this little guy, but Paro sounds like a 25 year old Tech Student screaming into the microphone. I kind-of wish the "AOOORUURK!"s weren't so head-splittingly spontaneous..
When everyone has robots for pets, and cats and dogs are nothing more than animals to people, I'll tame wild kittens and love them, even though they're mortal like me. Not excepting mortality is a great weakness of people :(
excellent, perfect company and great therapy/help mate. I can see how guide dogs maybe replaced with these. Sensible to consider the effect of your age/death on a living pet.
They need to put that dog down. ):

sad but true.. loving a pet a lot means suffering a lot more when he's going to die..
no everyone (At every age) can bear that... so this is a pracical solution......

I feel so sad for these people who are more willing to love and "care" for a robot rather than a living, breathing animal.
At least they seem happy now.

@niva2gr Its part of the Shinto faith to be able to attribute soul or spirit forces to inanimate objects.

i think that it's really cute and fun, but it could never replace interaction with a real pet that loves you back.
