tom waits is frank sinatra in the man with the golden arm . its frank's wild years, when sinatra was a non-person in america. its a norman rockwell painting of old style america- halcyonic days in that mad old nostalgic light. its 4 o clock in the morning and still we cant sleep. melancholia for a depressed drunk. jack vettriano, the scottish painter is the closest to the feeling - nostalgic melancholia . beautiful.
To be honest there's nothing I would love more than to be able to sing like Tom Waits. I can see why anyone would want to, I think he has the most expressive and touching voice I've ever heard. Nothing wrong with wanting your words to carry weight.
I wasn't being an idealist or a critic at all :S how far off, all I was saying is being a copycat won't work in the long run that's all..not with music like this at least.
What I meant is there any succesful artist out now who sound remotely like early Tom Waits? No, but do you think there's no one out there writing and singing like early Tom Waits? Course there are people out there doing that.
What do you want someone else's voice for? You copy someone else and then there's nothing to your sound, no identity just sing in your own voice.
I was thinking about this the other day, why it is there's no one else quite like Tom Waits with his profile and it's purely because he's an original in a way and copycats don't work, it's not because there's no one else out there doing it.
Gremilnfeatures your a right idiot, and with that attitude, definetly not a musician, just a critic and an amateur at that. Musicians are made of their influences, that is the truth whether you like it or not, maybe that guy wants a voice like tom waits, and for all you know he wants to play sitar to that too. You can be an idealist all day long if you want, but if you think people should only play all stuff completely that they have imagined their selves, well you try giving it a shot
I am not an idiot, somebody said how can I make my voice like Tom Waits . Yes there are people you can compare his voice to but I doubt he sat down and said how can I sound exactly like Louis Armstrong. I just meant sing in your own voice.
you´re right.. but what tom does is genius, you know, he´s constantly a decade infront of todays music, just by looking in the past, it all runs in circles you see. Now, THAT is what makes him one of the best artists in the world I think
in the 70´s he was making jazz, when everyone was listening to rock, in the 80´s he was making industrial/junkyard experimental music, when everyone was listening to pop, in the 90´s he was making punk/blues, when everyone was making grunge, and today he´s making great alternative music.. so, you see, he´s constantly decade infront of today, just by being a decade behind ;)
you can get a voice like that by chainsmoking practically all the time and drinking whiskey every day/night. if you want to lower your voice you could try swallowing cough medicine
This performance took place about 7 months before I stumbled across his 'Small Change' LP inside a Japanese record store. I've been a fan ever since and was fortunate enough to see him in concert during his 'Mule Variations' tour. Thanks for uploading the entire performance and for the quality of the upload.
SarahV, you're an angel--this is the show I saw at Tower Theater in Phila. I've been trying to pin down the time period for years. I was kinda foggy back then. Musta been '80 or '81. Same physical styling, tunes, arrangements, backup, everything. Thanks for posting the videos. Great memories, now that I can recall them. I feel like an amnesia victim. Kids--don't try this at home. You could lose some of the best times you ever had. Seriously, this one was a keeper and I had lost it. Thx SarahV!
I can sing like tom waits. ;-)

you don't know anything about music then. listen to louis armstrong and russain folks songs, and you'll hear a lot of what tom waits took.
Heeey333 2 years ago
What made you say that?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
people saying stuff like tom waits is the most original singer of all time isn't true
Heeey333 2 years ago
I didn't say that, and I don't think that.
