I'm so glad I ran into this recording! One of the very best I've heard of Jussi. I'd love to know what recording it is! Cred to the recording team, the quality of the recording brings this fantastic tenor almost all the way to my apartment =)
@maxhansendk: I'm very certain that you think Jussi was the greatest tenor of all times. So why be diplomatic? Why don't you say is as it is - that's what he is for you?
I think that is perfectly legitimate as it is all a matter of opinion - you are not making anyone wrong by saying it.
For me he wasn't - for me it's Caruso - and second Jussi. But that's me !
The best version i have ever heard, I wish lived when he was famous.. He has that best tenor touch voice and feelings, what a strong voice... I just admire.. Thank you GreenCallas for this recording. He is amazing... The best.. I have no words to describe his voice.. Just marvelous... Better than any of the tenor's i have heard singing this song..
Bjorling was the man that Caruso said was the only one that could succeed him. His voice, like Caruso's, has greater resonance than the other tenors ...even than the great ones like Domingo, Lanza, Pavarotti. The latter three are more guttural in sound.
Actually it was Caruso's wife, later on, who said Jussi was the only one who could succeed her late husband. Nonetheless, I second whoever said this, everything considerd, is my top tenor of all time. What a voice.
It is interesting to compare this version with that of Joseph schmidt's, also on youtube. Ignore, for the purpose of comparison, Schmidt's amazing trill.
Yes but neither was the laugh in Leoncavallo's "Vesti La Guibba" but I think Caruso was the first to do it. The Schmidt rendition is different all together as I think they use some Hebrew instruments even, I really enjoyed it.
Thank you so much ................

The recordings of Jussi Björling and Enrico Caruso are still the standard for this aria Amazing isn't it ?
The Caruso recording from more than 100 years ago (1904) is by many considered the ultimate performance of Una furtiva lagrima.

How can some say he's a cold Northener?? Just listen!

Jussi was good, but Franco Corelli was the king of all tenors! On stage with any other tenor, Franco would had blown them into the weeds. Nuff said!

Maybe what makes this singer great, besides the physical equipment, is the gift of concentration?
taumm 5 years ago
Very good, one of the all time best. Perhaps second only to Corelli.

King of all tenors (Bjorling)
I bow...Master

We all have different tastes. Many think Bjorling is the most completer an well rounded tenor of all time!
Caruso avoided high c. Pavarotti used electronics and seldom (never?) sang in foreign languages. Italian only.
Bjorling sang in swedish, italian, french, danish, and even russian!! And had little helpe of electronics since they mostly developed after 1960.
maxhansendk 5 years ago 10
Good, then your theory about Mario Lanza using electronics is certainly out the window considering he died in 1959!
GreekCallas 5 years ago
@maxhansendk he also sang in German and Norwegian.

But Björling was only 10 when Caruso died.

yeah, but Bjorling started singing at 4... lol.
bunthius 5 years ago
I highly doubt he would be compared to Caruso at 10.
GreekCallas 5 years ago
lol, of course not... I hope you know I was just furthering your point. I was just being silly by stating that fact. ;)

@GreekCallas It was actually Caruso's widow who made the comment.

Why ignore it? It's better than most...?

Yes,few tenors can( could) match it but it is not in the original score.
