  • I'm curious that after you show a pitcher faults in his mechanics, what do you do to fix them? It seems like the muscle memory is so strong that it'd be nearly impossible along with the pitching motion being such a fast and complicated series of movements

  • I am an ex- pro pitcher for the white sox org and for Fullerton. I have been reading the articles and watching videos for the past 6 months. I ending up having back surgery a year ago bc I had alot of mechanical faults he talks about. I agree with everything said about pitching and mechanics, however, I think its foolish to discourage kids from working out all together. Most players dont do enough explosive exercises, instead trying to "get big" which in turn causes alot of muscle disfunction

  • Jow43,

No...there are no exercises. The only thing that will help increase hip and trunk rotation speed is the understanding of proper explosive mechanics and practicing those proper mechanics so that forces from your lower body are efficiently transferred to your hips and trunk.

It is all about how you start your first movement toward the plate.

  • any exercises i can do to try and get my hipe to turn quicker? would certain ab workouts help this

  • my analysis 1.12 - stride (good)

1.40 (bad thing , the elbow is higher than shoulder , simply Inverted L please do not learn this )

1.42 (-good stride angle more than 100

    -good elbow below shoulder

-good timing, which means vertical hand while right leg is half turn.

2.20 (good lead with elbow, and right leg scrap on the ground)

3.23 (good right hand pronate helps to reduce the pressure, last 4.56 good followthrough phase, but not in a good fielding position. Major Concern: Inverted L

  • External rotation is a function of trunk rotation speed. No amount of J-bands or arm exercises is going to improve external shoulder rotation.

A pitcher must also have normal range of motion at the shoulder joint but it is mechanics that creates the amount of external rotation a pitcher will have.

    Dick Mills

  • throw fast is useless compare to throw accurate, and u see the above inverted L , it will kill a lot of pitchers, with their shoulder and elbow ,

  • its ALL about external rotation, you arm can only accelerate what it can decelerate. the important part is to keep your elbow above your shoulder so it can have a chance to support the fragile ligaments in your elbow. building external rotation is possible by using exercise bands watch jaeger baseball workouts, if gaining velocity is something you desire than get a j-band and pre-hab your arm.

  • If I sent a video of my pitching mechanics, would you take a look at them?

  • hes one of my favorite pitchers right now and im yankees fan he used his body really good to generate alot of velocity

  • I hope everyone realizes that you still have to be blessed with an amazing arm in order to throw 95+. It's not like good mechanics will turn a guys who throws 88 into 95. A lot of coaches have their own ideas, but talk to an athletic trainer and they will tell you what is best for the body. They are biomechanic specialists.

  • Now that's a stupid comment.

  • Why?

  • athletic trainers dont know shit actually!! biomechanic specialists are called kinesiologists! and the first thing a kinesiologist who specializes in the pitching motion would tell you that the single most important thing you need to develop maximum pitching velocity is your mechanics assuming that the pitchers body is in complete pitching shape... another thing!! the arm by itself has a LOT less to do with velocity than you think.....

  • athletic trainers do kno ther shit but pitching is mostly legs and core and the arm is just like the lever to turn a machine

  • it is absolutely possible for a guy who throws 88 to throw 95!! tell that to joel zumaya who has thrown 103 and yet his senior year in high school couldnt go over 90!! and what about billy wagner? he threw low 80s in high school! to throw hard off a mound you need a quick tempo, good timing, strong and flexible core, and A LONG STRIDE! the arm is the least of your worries on the mound buddy!! been pitching all my life and did it wrong until 3 years ago! and now im consistent 88-92

  • I feel sorry for the athletic trainers you have been around. They do know "shit" if you talk to a good one. Most athletic trainers have a degree in kinesiology (usually masters.) You just named two freaks that are exceptions. There are only a handful of guys that can throw 100+ mph. Wagner was throwing right handed, broke his arm and then began throwing left handed. I know a pitcher needs good mechanics to maximize velocity, but it's no guarentee you will throw 100.

  • As for Zumaya, he was obviously still developing. By what you are saying, buddy, if all pitchers were to follow nolan ryans routine then they could all throw 99 for 150 pitches over 9 innings. It's nice to hear that you figured your mechanics out, but you still arent throwing 95. You can work your ass off and you will NEVER throw 103. I don't care how good your mechanics and strenght is. You mean to tell me Bobby Jenks has a strong flexible core? Give me a break buddy.

  • yes i know i dont throw 95, i have touched 93 though and its very close... its not the velocity that matters here, its what ive managed to throw in comparison with how fast i threw before!! ive been throwing 82-86 since i was a sophomore in high school with bad mechanics and shoulder pain and now i throw in the 90s. it would be the same gain from 88 to 95.. as for bobby jenks goes... you would be SURPRISED by this guy! dont let his belly fool you...

  • bobby jenks has a strong and flexible core! yes he does! just like joba chamberlain, eric gagne, jonathan broxton, cc sabathia, bartolo colon, etc... dont let their shapes fool you!!! im telling you i thought that way too!! these people work their asses off dude! as for bobby jenks mechanics if you took a look at a video from third base side and went frame by frame on standard 30 frames per second you would be very surprised to see how good his mechanics really are

  • When you say work hard, does that mean at the buffet? Whatever you say man... you don't have a clue. I take that back. You kinda know what you are talking about, it just seems like you cant accept the fact some people are blessed more than others.

  • look man, i get what you are saying. some people have better arms than others. what you dont get is that a great arm isnt going to necessarily translate to having a great fastball off the mound! thats all im saying. you need a lot more than just a good arm... ive long tossed with kids that throw much farther than me and yet on the mound i throw harder! who has a better arm? they do! but who generates more velocity on the mound? me! throwing is not pitching

  • vladimir guerrero is the perfect example of this! this guy used to throw mid 90s from right field, monster arm from the outfield. why wouldnt they try to make him into a pitcher? first because hes too good of a hitter, but second because on the mound he had a mediocre fastball! it did not transfer to the mound

  • all in all, good conversation man, im not here to bust your balls or be stubborn or anything like that, i just love this shit

  • u guys are on crack thinking a long stride is the key to velocity..arm action and whip mean alot more..google ron woolforth and take a look at his kids arm action...you stride too long you cant rotate correctly..stride lenghth comes from the natural uncoiling of the hips,,its a controlled 'fall' from the mound not a step drive and reach

  • there are 100 keys to pitching. The fact is that every pitcher is different because their bodies work differently. Everyone thinks they have the answer to throw harder. There is no cookie-cutter mold for pitching. your legs are stronger that you arms. Your arm will ware out faster than your legs, it's a fact. Why then would you only "fall" off the mound rather than drive through? Stride length is whats most comfortable for the pitcher.

  • do you push like crazy off the back foot when you hit? of course not and you dont when you pitch either ,,of course you feel a little push on the ball of your feet BUT thats not the same PUSH that you condone..????stide length is set by the natural uncoiling of the lower body before the arm whips..you dont conciously set stride length,,OVERSTRIDING inhibits proper hip rotation

  • hitting and pitching are not comparable. Of course overstriding inhibits pitching, but how far is overstriding? It depends on the pitcher.a-rod hit off of hit front foot and teixeira hits off of his back leg, two different styles of hitting that get the same results. Look at rod carew and ichiro, both singles hitters, but their mechancis are totally different.

  • hitting and pitching are very COMPATABLE,,send me your e mail and i'll show you a link of a hitters bottom half and a pitchers ,,u tell me which one is which..if you can pitch you can hit...see DIXON

  • nice job.

  • lol, this a ferrari not a volkswagen? YOUR PROBABLY ITALIAN!

  • Great, thank you!

  • bard is the man

  • I don't know how he gets his forearm horizontal before he throws. I can't even flex it that far.

  • no audio?

  • very cool video, some stuff there i never noticed before and i will try out.

fyi i think it was a little slow, witth the pause button you dont have to freez it so much, but hey 5 stars ne way

  • would like to hear what leftyDM is saying about these awsome mechanics
