As a fellow musician, I will say that the playing is par excellent. Now I don't know all the circumstances involved here, but as a former military man the jazzy performance on what appears to be a "parade" motif for some reason doesn't sit well with me. Though the performance is well done, it sort of smacks of high school or college half-time show. Now...the same music done in a concert setting...I'm fine with. Best wishes to the Air Force and especially these fellow musicians..
Not military, nor a musician. Agree that smooth jazz played by grown men in uniform moving about on a field lacks a certain dignity. This is suited only for seated playing at a military ball or similar function.
Its like the tact of the 80's and as classy as vegas. It should be verboten!!
@ValleyVikings2010 Sorry to disappoint you , I am not in the least "up tight " , as you suggest . I am , however , a person with years of experience in both Air Force and Army bands ( 8 yrs Air Force & 17 yrs Army ) . Also , I have an educated and correct use of both the rules of spelling and English grammar .... skills in which you seem sadly lacking . Please , feel sorry for yourself ; I am doing very well , thank you !
@ValleyVikings2010 : As usual , you seem a bit confused . I just viewed the 76th U.S. Army Band . They are NOT playing the Army Song , but are playing "The Saint Louis Blues " march . Pls , educate yourself enough that you can distinguish between titles and styles of music , before you display your ignorance to the world !!!!
@ValleyVikings2010 : I don't know what the Air Forse is to which you refer ; perhaps you meant to say the U.S. ARMY AIR FORCE ???? And , since I know a few Army Air Force vets from WW ll , I can tell you that they served with more military discipline and pride than is found in the present U.S. Air Force .
At first , I was impressed . Then , they started playing this "jazzed" up version of the Air Force song . Disgusting and very un-military . You would never hear an Army band playing the Army song in this manner . Typical of the lack of military spirit and discipline of Air Force bands !!!!!
ah, Bischoff bier, when I was at Sebach Air Base, that's what we drank at Gas Haus zum Hirsch....nice times in the late 1950s. Lots of rank for those guys, not much for us back then..oh well, 145 dollars a month went a long way :)
Nothing wrong with those uniforms, seen worse. I'm not that fond of the 'college band' approach and much prefer military music but these guys are all top notch players and overall a quite brilliant band. As for the conductor, nothing wrong with 100% involvement in the music. He was feeling it as well as hearing it. Good show.
Once again, good grief, the music director looks like he has a bowel obstruction. The sound and moves make it look like an American college band.
Erneut gute Kummer, sieht die Musik Regisseur wie er ein Darmverschluss hat. Der Sound bewegt sich und lassen es so aussehen wie ein amerikanischer College-Band.
I agree that the uniforms are ugly. The grimacing on the conductor's face is unfortunate. Still the overall effect is a positive one.
It has been over twenty five years since I last saw this band perform at Ramstein AB. It is a joy to see young airmen actually making music.
This band as a military unit is the direct descendant of the WW II US Army Air Force band conducted by Major Glenn Miller. It is wonderful to see this lineage acknowledged in performance by today's band.
looks like they're trying to represent the throwback days to when the USAF was created as it's own unit around the time of WWII. Given they're in Europe, that'd be my guess behind it
Military historians have in jest come up with the "Ugly Uniform Theory": the side with the ugliest uniform (usually) wins the war, because they spend more time preparing to fight than iron uniforms and polish brass. General Schwartz is simply reviving the theory.
The USAFE band is called "Glenn Miller's Own" and is headquartered in Glenn Miller Hall on Sembach AB. I'm retired Army and make as many jokes about the Air Force as anyone, but these folks are truly a great band. Of COURSE they are going to put a swing beat to their tunes. Just because you don't like swing, doesn't mean everyone can't. BTW...judging by the F C K (Fussball Club Kaiserslautern) markings, I think this is the Kaiserslautern, Germany, Stadion.
All of the military bands are ambassadors to the public for their branch and therefore must cater to their audience. It looks to me like their at a marching band festival. This is typical of what you would see and hear at such an event. Way to reach out and represent the Air Force to the German public.
Shows how little you know, I have seen a marine regional band play a rendition of the Marines hymn at a band fest. Besides, we in the military represent American diversity and the aerospace industry is ever changing and evolving so to is the Air Force.
not really..some fellow workers who were married lived in, hmmm, maybe it was Bad Durkheim but it was a long time ago :) We would walk down from the base into Sembach town, go to Gasthaus zum Hirsch and order wienerschnitzel, etc, all for 3 marks (4.20 to 1 dollar)

Way too oldschool for where our bands are at these days (making compositions for movies) Perfectly orchestrated, but still.

who redesigned the uniforms? THey look so bad compared to the older ones. These look like cheap flight attendant uniforms.

Why the thumbs down? I love the USAF but the uniforms are ugly. I dont know who would say they like the new one.
Maxobillion 2 years ago
The Major's uniform at 1:31- 1:40 looks baggy and not tailored, more like a mass produced jacket.
Like I said, I love the USAF but the person who designed this uniform should have his house strafed.

Why SWING the Air Force song ? This is a disgrace - but typical of the less-than-military
US Air Force ! You would NEVER hear a Marine or Army or Navy band play their service song with a swing beat !
slikrok593 2 years ago
slikrok,
I too hate Swing Music and rather prefer British military marches and ceremonial,
BUT I take offense at your "less-than-military" comment about the Air Force.
Norms, tastes, and behavior are probably less when you have an Armed Service where even some non-coms have advanced degrees.
They also serve, sacrifice comfort, income, and years of their lifetime, and some sacrifice their lives as well.
I'm the proud father of an Air Force Master Sergeant with a Master's Degree.
hongbao 2 years ago 3
Hongboa - I am a retired Army First Sgt (E/8) ,
with a Masters Degree ... so what's your point .
And , I served 4 years in the AF until I grew weary of the lack of discipline and unit cohesion and
so finished my military career in the US Army .
slikrok593 2 years ago
"lack of discipline"?
The Air Force is probably the ONLY branch that stresses discipline beyond belief. Maybe it was just your lack of discipline that you "grew weary" of.
