zo was a warrior. always in front of that rim on defense like a real big man should be. if somebody got a dunk against his team it probably was on him. but we all know, he sent alot of weak shit back up outta there!!!
LOL damn MJ dunked on Alonzo one of the games greatest shotblockers, not once, not twice but 3 times!! in this game..thats crazy. And whats scary is he made it look effortless.. funny thing is that he did pretty much the same thing in another game this season 93 vs Hornets in Chicago when he dropped 52. The greatest to ever lace em up.
Hubie made a great point @ 3:02 in the video. Jordan is the best offensive and defensive player in the league. That statement sums up Jordan from 87 until 98. He is the G.O.A.T There is NO player from the past nor the present day that even comes close to his level of greatness.

Thanks Hoops. I have watched much of your bball library and I have to say thank you again for the memories. These definatly were some great times for NBA (1980-2003). Do you still watch the NBA today? I do watch but not like a used to. The guys today are definatly more athletic but the skill level has gone down. Also I don't like some of the rule changes. I used to gripe about the Pistons and Knicks defense but in a way it was hard defense even though it went over the line at times lol.
This was a fun game to watch. Even if you weren't a bball fan then to see these two teams giving everything they had. The NBA game needs to get back to this.
this is one of my favorite games of the 93 season....dunks....excitement...drama...real competition...this game had it all....who knows if they had kept this hornets squad together how many times they wouldve met the bulls or knicks in the playoffs
man, that 93 to 95 hornets team was a deep squad in the 90s...zo, grandmama, muggsy, kendall gill, david wingate, dell curry, johnny newman....yeah that team was loaded!!!
@pcorf you know I was listening to that and I wonder if he ment that they weren't going to be the number 1 seed going into the Eastern Conference playoffs. I think the Knicks were the 1 seed going into the playoffs but yes the Bulls won the East that year along with the NBA title.
The years when Allan Bristow was the Hornets coach. And this was before the painted area was the honeycomb design lol.
Kendall Gill was an underrated offensive player. Larry Johnson's patent move was that turn around jumper from 15 feet. And I can't believe with that nice all around team Charlotte had in the mid 90's that they were never really better than .500.
I was a Michael Jordan fan but I have to say it was fun watching that Hornets team play. Too bad they couldn't keep that nucleus together a couple extra years.
I've always liked the Hornets, their jerseys always seemed so cool to me. But i'm very surprised they haven't made it to an Conference or NBA Final yet. I thought LJ/Zo/Curry/Bouges would get them there it didn't happen, then the teams lead by Rice didn't play much defense, if they won that game 7 against the Spurs in 08. I truly felt they were gonna win it all, there was no way LA or Boston could run with them. If they get a good backup center & a quality starter at SG, they'll be champs.
As someone who's always had great respect for him, I couldn't agree more. It's been a long time since I've seen anyone who plays with the emotion that he routinely displayed on the court.
The Charlotte Coleseium/The Hive I believe was one of the loudest stadiums In NBA history, I love the stadium sounds, Im so mad they took this staudium down. Everthing about that staudium was cool.
As a kid growing up in charlotte, I was obsessed with the hornets. They struggled through alot of losing seasons, but Charlotte really loved this team.
I own that game, it was the 81st game of the 1993, the Bulls were supposed to win the Hornets to go 58-23 and then go at the showdown of the last game against the Knicks (who were 59-22), where the 2 giants would battle for the ultimate home court advantage of the Eastern Conference.
But the Bulls lost to Charlotte and the scheduled 'showdown' became a routine soup..
Still, they played tough in playoff fashion but the Knicks still won so they went 60-22 and the Bulls finished with 57-25.
The Hornets would go on to upset Boston in the first round of the playoffs. They'd lose to the Knicks in 5 games in round 2. First playoff appearence for the bees.
The greatest players always seemed to turn any slight against them (no matter how small the slight) into unbelievable motivation. Nobody did this better than Jordan.
Any criticism and he would throw it back at the critic with a vengeance.
First of all this my first comment on one of your vids hoops, you always bring the best of MJ in your vids,Thanks a lot, and what a great game too bad the bulls lost, but those nasty dunks by Jordan en Mourning, damn ! he was just unstoppable, this goes to show how Jordan was on his peak in 93' too bad he retired, and I understand hes reason for that, I guess every Michael Jordan fan understands why, otherwise it wouldve been two more championships in 94 and 95.
we all knew he couldnt continue playing with no energy left.
If mj didnt retire in 1993, he would've gone in 94 if not in 95 for good. no way can he play NBA finals every year since 1991. He needed to walk away for a while. better 1993 than 1995.
He recovered fully till 1995 & gave us 4 more great years.
Also, MJ's last shot is eerily similar to the last he made in the 2003 All-Star Game. Both on the right baseline, on both he drove and faded away right at the out of bounds line, both nothing but net, both to put his team ahead in what looked like a game winner, only to have a player on the opposing team be fouled, and both saw the other team winning. Only differences are there's more time on the clock here and this one didn't go into overtime.
Someone said Alonzo blocked one of Jordan's shots. This video showcases what was always my favorite thing about MJ, how when someone blocked a shot, criticized him, or did anything else he didn't like, he'd always make it a point to show them who's the man...like dunking on Zo 3 times in this clip, or when he was w/the Wizards and Shandon Anderson said he's not the same MJ, he comes out and almost scores 40 at age 40, seeming like he couldn't miss!
Also we get to see the young LJ, the freakish explosive LJ...not the turnaround, spinaroony LJ. If not for his back injury LJ coulda been a monster!!!
In a prev meeting in Chicago MJ posterized Zo. In this game (but not shown) Zo got him back with a nice block on a Jordan drive. Somehow Michael got mad and proceeded to posterized Zo 3 times! 3 times! Needless to say Mike took the block personal.
hehe, Zo just loves to get dunked on. But I give him props though for actually attempting to make the block as he doesn't seem to care if he's posterized or not.
MJ's dunk on Zo from 4:51-5:08 was ridiculous! Mourning had all the time in the world to take a stab at it, but MJ just elevated over him. What else is new... ;P
Larry Johnson was a man beast back then. I remember thinking to myself that the Hornets were a PG away from owning the east. They had legitimate all-stars at the 4 and 5. Kendall Gill was already an all-star caliber player that had a chance to be elite. They had pretty good role players. They just needed a PG. Mugsy was alright. But you're not winning anything with a 5'3 PG with a limited offensive game. Mugsy would've been an ideal change of pace backup pg.
The Hornets were one of a few teams from that time period that could've been great but fell way short for various reasons. The Nets were another team on the way up with DC, Kenny Anderson and Drazen. The Magic also come to mind. People say the 90's was watered down. And in some ways it was. But it was more of a case of multiple teams not living up to expecations than a lack of overall talent.
I remember this game really well. In the third quarter the Bulls were struggling. I think Alonzo might have blocked one of MJ's shots and Jordan got a bit mad. He attacked the basket like mad and got 3 dunks on 3 consecutive possessions. It just seemed like he could dunk it whenever he wanted.
By the way, the third dunk at 5:44 is on both Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. I love it. Thanks Hoops.
What's so amazing to me is, as anyone who's followed MJ's career can attest, this is the year he "Physically" started to decline & he's STILL heads & shoulders above everyone! LOL!!
If I wanted to pick any version of MJ to put in today's NBA, it'd be EASY for me to pick 1987-90 MJ..that's TOO easy..I'd take this MJ & he'd STILL run roughshod over the league & there aint a current perimeter defender in the league that could do anything about it..LOL!!
It wasn't really a physical decline. He was mentally and physically exhausted from a full nba season --> olympics --> full nba season. That's the main reason why the Bulls fell off so much from 91-92 (67 wins) to 92-93 (55 wins I believe).
that was the main reason Mike was esp was tired and the crazy part was that we has third in the MVP voting, lead the league in scoring and first in steals and he did all of that while he was fatigue
He meant EC regular season champs. The Bulls had to win this game to tie NY for the playoff home court advantage. This was the second to last game of the season. They lost the next game to NY and NY got the home court advantage through out the EC Playoffs.
great edit. thought i was watching a real game instead of highlights. Im running 2 guys at jordan no matter what the situation is. those 4th quarter fadeways and pullups were deadly.
Back in the day, that Hornets had so much promise. Three consecutive draft picks in a row with Gill, LJ, and Zo. Had just as much potential as the Magic that year. Great vid. Love that fadeaway J my Mike near the end. Who says he can't make a shot would two guys on him? Kobe fans? Man had ice water in his veins and can consistently make that shot when it matters.
i know cartwright was PISSED lmao he gets no respect but he was WIDE OPEN on the last inbounds play. But i was on that team i woulda lookd to pass it to the bench b4 to bill lol
Indeed.. Much respect for Alonzo though.. He was never afraid to get dunked on.. Which is what made him a fantastic shot blocker.. You win some you lose some :-)
Nice game. There are some good moves here I haven't seen before, namely the one-handed ball fake (palmed), drive to the basket, and dunk in Mourning's face. Thanks for the vid
No they weren't. Knicks beat the Bulls for Eastern conference best record & had home court advantage throughout the playoffs this year due to this Hornet loss.
I know that this is the Jordan worshipping page, lol, but i really liked that Hornets squad! One of the few expansion teams that actaully had some solid players and playoff potential. LJ, Zo and Mugsy!
Too bad us Knick fans never had chance to have this version of the Grandmama LJ on our team in the late 90s. By then he was physically never the same with his bad back and all. I hardly remember him ever being able to elevate to the rim. Here he is in his prime taking it to the hole with authority. Oh well, what could have been. Great to watch Jordan bang it on Mourning those three times!
too bad LJ, Zo, Gill, and Bogues never stayed together long enough. They advanced to the 2nd round that year (they playoff where the great Reggie Lewis collapsed and eventually passed on that summer). They could've been an awesome team if only they put all egos aside.
Zo got what he deserved from MJ...3 facial dunks in one game..LOL...
quick as hell....fearless.....saw him when he played for the Raptors....actually started 2 playoff games for us and did better than our previous starter Doug Christie...
He had a perfect game once: perfect from the field...perfect from the line...no turnovers...
Coaches loved Bogues because he rarely turned the ball over. He had the lowest assist to turnover ratio. He rarely had the ball stolen from him maybe because he was so close to the floor that taller players didn't want to bend down to reach. He would run the offense and make the right play. He was also part of the famous Dunbar High with Reggie Williams, David Wingate, & the late Reggie Lewis, all of whom made it to the NBA. If you're 5'3 and in the NBA, you must be really good.
MJ's fadeaway at the end was so CLUTCH, this was a sick charlotte hornets squad larry johnson alonzo mourning mugsy bogues kendall gill this was 1 nice team man, LJ/Grandma-ma was a beast look @ the size of him
Hoops thanks 4 upping this game, the 2 dunks on Alonzo Mourning were so sick MJ loved bangin' on Georgetown centers LOL every Georgetown center MJ faced he put them on a poster Mutombo Ewing Mourning
Personally I always liked Gill a lot. I always had the feeling he was a kind of "Jordan-kid" ?!He seemed to take MJ's moves as a model for his own game which was kinda elegeant as well....until he changed his hair style :)
Interesting that it was Gill who stated that Jordan was not the same when he played them when MJ was with the WIzards....he said something like "Mj is not as ambitious on the court as he used to be"...
Yeh but he was right tho so no big deal, i doubt MJ woulda taken offense to that comment. The smartest player in the history of bball plays to his limits, otherwise he'd have shot under 40% for his career right?
Of course he'll say that after a post-prime and should have been retired MJ.. MJ still scored more points than he did for those two years than Gill ever averaged his whole career.
OH man I remember this game by Chicago losing that gave the Knicks homecourt advantage in the East and also making the last game of the season which was Chicago @ New York on NBC meaningless
thanks for this game- this alone stands out as the most memorable game of my childhood- but i thought i d never see it again! i just remember being a kid and being in awe of how badass mj looked - and how he simply dominated every other man on the court. thanks Hoops!
When Charlotte basketball was relevant. Man they could built Zo and LJ on that team for years if they didnt hate each other so much. A pity.

I love when MJ goes to the fade along the baseline like he did @ 7:57

great game

I remember this game really well. In the third quarter the Bulls were struggling. I think Alonzo might have blocked one of MJ's shots and Jordan got a bit mad. He attacked the basket like mad and got 3 dunks on 3 consecutive possessions. It just seemed like he could dunk it whenever he wanted.
By the way, the third dunk at 5:44 is on both Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. I love it. Thanks Hoops.

facial! why have i never seen that dunk at 5:07?
victorjulio15 3 years ago
I was thinking the same thing.
That move at 4:54 - 5:something was simply...just, wow!
And the thing is, as you noted, that move is rarely (if ever to my knowledge) shown in his highlight reels.
Simply, wow.

What's so amazing to me is, as anyone who's followed MJ's career can attest, this is the year he "Physically" started to decline & he's STILL heads & shoulders above everyone! LOL!!
If I wanted to pick any version of MJ to put in today's NBA, it'd be EASY for me to pick 1987-90 MJ..that's TOO easy..I'd take this MJ & he'd STILL run roughshod over the league & there aint a current perimeter defender in the league that could do anything about it..LOL!!
blackadam06 3 years ago 2
It wasn't really a physical decline. He was mentally and physically exhausted from a full nba season --> olympics --> full nba season. That's the main reason why the Bulls fell off so much from 91-92 (67 wins) to 92-93 (55 wins I believe).
Natoma1977 3 years ago
You're right, that ALSO played a HUGE part of the Bulls Up & Down 1993 season.
That was a BIG concern of Scottie & MJ when they signed up for Olympic play the prior year..
blackadam06 3 years ago
that was the main reason Mike was esp was tired and the crazy part was that we has third in the MVP voting, lead the league in scoring and first in steals and he did all of that while he was fatigue
jaboo82681 3 years ago
'92-93 Bulls were 57-25 in the regular season.
mrakbaseball 3 years ago
NOT just full nba season-->olympics-->full nba season.
Its going deep into NBA finals every year since 91 plus olympics in the middle. thats just too much. playing 100+ games every year exhausted him.

MJ with those Dunks looked like it was 1987-90 all over again..lol

why did he say "the bulls will no be eastern conference champions"?
lujavana 3 years ago
He meant EC regular season champs. The Bulls had to win this game to tie NY for the playoff home court advantage. This was the second to last game of the season. They lost the next game to NY and NY got the home court advantage through out the EC Playoffs.

great edit. thought i was watching a real game instead of highlights. Im running 2 guys at jordan no matter what the situation is. those 4th quarter fadeways and pullups were deadly.
basketballfreak24 3 years ago
Back in the day, that Hornets had so much promise. Three consecutive draft picks in a row with Gill, LJ, and Zo. Had just as much potential as the Magic that year. Great vid. Love that fadeaway J my Mike near the end. Who says he can't make a shot would two guys on him? Kobe fans? Man had ice water in his veins and can consistently make that shot when it matters.
sweetepnoy 3 years ago
geez, jordan makes it look like a video game. those dunks are ridiculous.

Indeed.. Much respect for Alonzo though.. He was never afraid to get dunked on.. Which is what made him a fantastic shot blocker.. You win some you lose some :-)

thanks for the upload, i was looking forward to the next one and it had been a while, but i bet these take forever to do so thanks.

i see, that may be.
but they still won the eastern conference championship en route to the NBA chip. so i got confused by that.

Nice game. There are some good moves here I haven't seen before, namely the one-handed ball fake (palmed), drive to the basket, and dunk in Mourning's face. Thanks for the vid
mlynch07 3 years ago
Great work as always...thanks from Spain
blefaritis69 3 years ago
why'd he say the bulls will not be eastern conference champions at the end? they obviously were that year.
ErpeloInc 3 years ago
No they weren't. Knicks beat the Bulls for Eastern conference best record & had home court advantage throughout the playoffs this year due to this Hornet loss.
mnkhan2020 3 years ago
I know that this is the Jordan worshipping page, lol, but i really liked that Hornets squad! One of the few expansion teams that actaully had some solid players and playoff potential. LJ, Zo and Mugsy!
williest1 3 years ago
yay new hoops video! and what a great game! so many good plays, especially a lot of dunks and i love that fake out by jordan when he palms the ball.
jwb6189 3 years ago
Watching the 3 dunks was worth it.
I just love it when someone dunks it on Mourning.
SrustinLim 3 years ago
Too bad us Knick fans never had chance to have this version of the Grandmama LJ on our team in the late 90s. By then he was physically never the same with his bad back and all. I hardly remember him ever being able to elevate to the rim. Here he is in his prime taking it to the hole with authority. Oh well, what could have been. Great to watch Jordan bang it on Mourning those three times!
Brandoni73 3 years ago
whyed you put this on...they lost...but won the title
3BALL4 3 years ago
it was a good game for MJ regardless
uberathlete 3 years ago
Don't get mad at Gill. It did not seem that he was trying to offend MJ in any way. It was more like a fan who stated that he saw a difference.
I just think it's interesting
triklops 3 years ago
too bad LJ, Zo, Gill, and Bogues never stayed together long enough. They advanced to the 2nd round that year (they playoff where the great Reggie Lewis collapsed and eventually passed on that summer). They could've been an awesome team if only they put all egos aside.
Zo got what he deserved from MJ...3 facial dunks in one game..LOL...
bballmemories 3 years ago
i never got to see bogues play. how good of a pg was he?
deserthobo 3 years ago
quick as hell....fearless.....saw him when he played for the Raptors....actually started 2 playoff games for us and did better than our previous starter Doug Christie...
He had a perfect game once: perfect from the field...perfect from the line...no turnovers...
srivatsanvij 3 years ago
Consummate floor general. Surprisingly wasn't much of a liability on D.
uberathlete 3 years ago
Coaches loved Bogues because he rarely turned the ball over. He had the lowest assist to turnover ratio. He rarely had the ball stolen from him maybe because he was so close to the floor that taller players didn't want to bend down to reach. He would run the offense and make the right play. He was also part of the famous Dunbar High with Reggie Williams, David Wingate, & the late Reggie Lewis, all of whom made it to the NBA. If you're 5'3 and in the NBA, you must be really good.
bballmemories 3 years ago
Jordan was dunking mad in that second half.

ya but could you imagine ron artest in that era of nba in the 90's when you could really play phsyical.

MJ's fadeaway at the end was so CLUTCH, this was a sick charlotte hornets squad larry johnson alonzo mourning mugsy bogues kendall gill this was 1 nice team man, LJ/Grandma-ma was a beast look @ the size of him

Personally I always liked Gill a lot. I always had the feeling he was a kind of "Jordan-kid" ?!He seemed to take MJ's moves as a model for his own game which was kinda elegeant as well....until he changed his hair style :)
Interesting that it was Gill who stated that Jordan was not the same when he played them when MJ was with the WIzards....he said something like "Mj is not as ambitious on the court as he used to be"...
anyone remember ??
triklops 3 years ago
Yeh but he was right tho so no big deal, i doubt MJ woulda taken offense to that comment. The smartest player in the history of bball plays to his limits, otherwise he'd have shot under 40% for his career right?
candiasis333 3 years ago
Of course he'll say that after a post-prime and should have been retired MJ.. MJ still scored more points than he did for those two years than Gill ever averaged his whole career.

jaboo82681 3 years ago
People should know that Gill actually did a tremendous job on Jordan throughout this game.
det916 3 years ago
Yes he did. He blocked a couple of shots in this one and played as good as you possible could 1-1.

thanks for this game- this alone stands out as the most memorable game of my childhood- but i thought i d never see it again! i just remember being a kid and being in awe of how badass mj looked - and how he simply dominated every other man on the court. thanks Hoops!
