  • that Billy D i hear yakking?

  • LOVED IT....thanks for sharing....

  • Your Weedhopper looks identical to the one I bought back in 1999, only mine had a Rotax 277, which was a very grossly underpowered engine. "The moped of the sky" is how I referred to it. I'm now in the process of purchasing a Paraplane from a fellow over in Kentucky, and I absolutely cannot wait to get it!! I live in the Smoky's, and can't wait to view them from the air.

  • what cc is the engine

  • Jesus H, seniors and flight, not a good combination.

  • @yintontiddlyipo No way! Older pilots usually have experience that the younger ones don't. My CFI is in his seventies and I wouldn't have it any other way!! Remember the old saying, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots"

  • hi ya, just out of interest how long does a full tank last, for flying time, kind regards

  • @legslenny I have a 3 1/2 gal tank can carry 5 gal if I want to change tank. I get anywhere from 1 to 1 1/4 of gal of fuel burn per hour at a cruse of 40 to 45 mph.

So it works out to about 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 hours of flight time

  • Hi Marc,

I imported a weedhopper kit into the UK in the early 90's and managed to build it successfully, but from a flying point of view it wasn't a success!

The engine would only attain between 3000/3500 rpm and consequently which proved to be not enough for safe flying.

Marc, just as a matter of interest, what was the take off rpm of the weedhopper in this video clip?

Best of luck and safe flying!

    Ray B.

  • @raybanky

Ray, The video you watched was taken when I was flying with the original engine. It only turns at 3500 RPMs.but I"m only 165 LBs so no problem. If you look at the other

videos I put up you'll see me flying with the new engine- a 440 Kawasaki. This motor has over twice the thrust,my buddy can take-off in about 50 feet. He's over 220 LBs

  • @marccarofano Thank you Marc for your reply and for the information I asked for.

My weight at the time I was trying to fly my Weedhopper was about 170 Lbs, so most probably the total weight of me and aircraft was too much for the Chotia engine.

The last time I flew my aircraft the engine quit at 100 ft and the subsequent landing did slight damage. I escaped without a cratch!!

My Weedhopper is now residing in our local museum.

    Take care. Ray B.

  • do you have data on the chotia engine? e.g. weight/power. ive never heard of it, and i was wondering what it was. also is it known how many were built, and when?

  • does that have ailerons?

  • No ailerons,has 12% dihedral instead.

  • Do you still have chotia parts?

  • Yes I have two complete Engines, there for sale at the right price

  • Do you have any spare props?

  • Yes

  • how much would you sell one for? What size and pitch?

  • Are you selling them?

  • Well, in case you decide to part with one let me know, we exchange e mails so as to work out a deal. As there are NO chotias here the one in best condition would be my choice...

    Thanks and regards,

    Alan.

  • Do weedhoppers have ailerons if not how do control the planes roll

  • The roll is controlled by the Dihedral in the wing

  • I bought a weedhopper last year and it came with that aileron kit on it but I took them off before I flew it .

  • Actually I was considering making a paramotor with a chotia 460...direct drive mellow rpm tone...so I started to search for one...I dont know if it will survive a pusher configuration...

    Regards,

    Alan.

  • What will you do with the Chotia engine?

  • I have three of them, why are you looking for one?

  • I have 3 of them, don't know what Im going to do with them at this point there just taking up space in the garage.

  • GERMANY FTW!!!

  • I know what your talking about, this is my 5th Hopper since 1978. I've had 277-447 and 502 Rotax's also a 377 Yamaha powered Hoppers.

I'm installing a 440 Kawasaki on the bird in this video right now.

  • my first weedhopper was a cmodel with the 460 chotia powered with dcell flashlight batteries,,now I have a 447 rotax,,,what a difference
