p.s. Having blagged your 1970 drum solo, I felt duty-bound to return the favour. So enclosed is the man and his band with a number he often played as an encore - the uplifting "Love For Sale" - enjoy!
You've done it again! Having seen the great man several times in the Seventies (usually from just two feet away) I was always disappointed that his records and TV performances rarely contained great solos. But this is TOP CLASS Buddy!
...IS? Yeah. Buddy always said all he needed was thebasic kit. And apart from a "Syndrum" he had one year - for a laugh - and that extra floor tom-tom (which was mostly there just to hold his towel) his superb kit WAS just basic...
Incredible speed and power, however not necessarily something that I hugely want to listen to. While technically amazing, I would much rather listen to joe morello, who has a much more melodic approach to his solos. No disrespect to buddy though, he will always be seen as one of, if not the greatest drummer to ever live.
I agree. joe morello is more fun to listen to. though both are stone cold off the hook amazing. i just like joe morello's style better. just something about the way he plays. if anything i'd say buddy plays with more intensity power, while joe plays with more finesse
All I can say is WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!! You have heard of the seven wonders of the World well Buddy is the 8th wonder. Never seen anything like him. Absolutely fucking amazing !! Did I say amazing !!!! lol
Gravity, my friend (at least thats what guys ike Dick Cully say). That angle helps the stick to get more momentum from gravity as they're more down atracted. It helps with the bounce, I guess.
Most amazing drummer I have ever witnessed....Was around 1970 at the Esquire Show Bar in downtown Montreal..A performance I have never stopped talking about up to now July 2009..Thanks for that great perfomance Buddy...RIP my friend!
That Slingerland 8 up 8 down COW snare sounds fantastic... much better than the Fibes snare he used later. I had the pleasure of seeing Buddy perform 3 times. Once was at a High Scool gym in Virginia. After the show, I walked up directly behind the bass drum and was completely suprised to see an old WELL worn Rogers swiv o matic pedal w/wood beater behind a shiny new Slingerland kit. With the help of youtube, we are all now getting the chance to see how good Buddy really was. Thanks Cadaverr!
For sheer stamina alone it's amazing. Buddy musta been what? 52? 53? Sittin in what musta been a very stuffy environment wearing what he is wearing and pumping out one of the greatest, if not THE greatest drum rolls in history....
This is one of my favorite solos Buddy ever did. The added footage was like ear candy to me! Great job, Cadaverr! They are many great drummers out there, whom many of them are great readers with mind boggling double strokes, great double bass prowless, independant limb techniques, and such, but I don't give a damn what anybody says, Buddy's playing and style was miles ahead of anybody who ever the drums! He was relentless in his quest of playing to perfection. His single strokes were the best!
Buddy was, without a shadow of doubt, the GREATEST technician to ever sit on a drum set. Those rolls and how effortless, beautiful, clean, loud and fast they are are from the outer space. Everything is so incredibly fluid. I've never seen anything like this solo until this very day. Those rolls have feelings. Every drummer that ever loved his snare should cry of joy. Its almost like a cartoon. Not real.
This solo is from my favorite era of Buddy's career - 1966-1972.
He is in his absolute prime here, and I don't care what anyone says, you will never see a better example of power, control, speed, dynamics, phrasing, musicality, and just sheer drumset dominance as witnessed in this video.
This is Buddy, The World's Greatest, at his Greatest.
I have to agree. This time period seems to be really "without peer". I can notice that Buddy had slowed down considerably from the beginning of the 80's and on. Probably due to his many heart attacks. However, I could also see an increasing musical genius (if thats even possible) as he got older, as to say that he was there to compensate for the less fast-forward BR version back in the 80's. People got a not so fast B. but had him even more brilliant musicaly speaking. Fantastic hat playing.
Cadaverr YOU ROCK THE HOUSE!!! I got your message. I was always curious to see the full version of this. And now I can die happy! I guess we have to thank modern drummer, Hudson music, and most of all YOU for posting ir. You da man!
You're welcome! I'm very glad you've enjoyed it. This is like those other Buddy clips: It always teaches you about... hmmm... Humility. Heh. Doesn't matter how good you are, you just can drool over his savant mindblowing genius. This is all a blur effect from this non-stop link betwen his godlike brain and unbelievable hands. Whatever was thought it was instantly translated into his hands. Genius. Period. Thank you very much again! : ]
Ive seen this video [and the old version] so many times, plus four years experience in drumming... and every time i watch this video i am even more mesmorised by Buddy than i was the previous time.
Its absoloutly amazing and everybody should know how to and want to apreciate this kind of dedication.
Well said. Highly agreed. The more u get to observe with your eyes and ears, the more you'll understand his subtle GENIUS. There is immense musicality and touch in everything this man has played. This solo is among his most astonishing demonstrations ever caught on tape though. Everything has a brilliant sense of swing, everything has a musical function. Every phrase, little pause, every power spent into an specific press roll and for how much time it was executed...Everything is just brilliant.
Glad you liked it! This was really vanished some months ago. Really a shame. I've found this full version and I couldn't help myself: I knew HAD to upload it. Buddy was (is!) the be(a)st!
Hahah no I didn't, but I'm gonna check it out! : ] have you ever seen superior stick control in your life? cleaner, faster and more complex executions and superior rudimental musicality? I surely haven't. Concerning the upload, never mind. We're all buddy fans. I just do what I'd love others could do for me (as far as drumming videos go). You're very welcome : ]
We will. Such simple/miserable life form will not be tolerated here, simply because such simplistic creatures are not able to produce an articulated discourse to make themselves inteligible (lol). Things such as "trevis wood pwn da 'ol dud" and other examples are barely recognizable as language after all. : ] These low-lives will be kept far away from here, where they can freely practise their barbaric bestiality. You can rest asured of that. Travis B. fans are the AIDS of the drumming world.
great is an understatement.
brilliant is not good enough.
fantastic is near the point.
but THE GOD of drums is near enough.
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD WHY THE HELL HAS THIS VIDEO GOT 13,050 VIEWS AND TRAVIS BARKER WHO IS SHIT GOT 13 MILLION. MAKES ME WANT TO SPIT BLOOD.

yeah, if you use traditional grip its nearly impossible to play a rim shot with the snare tilted towards you.

nemrac76 2 years ago
It's amazing to me how many so called "drummers" always wonder why guys like Buddy tilted their snare away from them.
No drummer who uses traditional grip would ever ask such a question ~
MarkR1957 2 years ago
I always wondered why but I figured out why when my teacher taught me traditional grip. I'm just more comfortable with matched grip.

Also, and I say this out of complete affection for BR and his family, but this particular rug is even funnier than most he wore.
I tell myself it was to curb the amount of sweat falling onto the snare.
