It's not true that East Germans haven't had any profit from the reunion. It's true that parts of the society are a mess, as you call it, and there are political extremists as well as a high rate of unemployment...But all in all, the economic standard in Eastern Germany increased enormously! A lot of formerly poor regions in Eastern Germany are even richer than many regions in the West! Plus, most of former DDR citizens are still in favour of the reunion! This reunion was necessary.

Whenever I see the left overs of the wall, it always reminds me of my friend's father, who lived in Berlin in the 80's. He still has a bit of the wall that he keeps, don't know whether it's just for memory or a trophy since he somehow managed to get it off the wall from before '89, but it's kind of eerie to see it in his house then look at what the wall once was.

I really want to see this gallery some day. Hopefully. Thanks for posting the vid!

I lived in Germany for 6 years when I was in the army still have pictures of the wall and "Check Point Charlie" Although I felt it was a good thing for the wall to come down. Many families who were seperated by it were able to be reunited. The economic turmoil that followed has been horrible for Germany. But then freedom always comes at a price.

Eastern Germany is a mess. The population is comprised of Neo Nazis skinheads, drug addicts and alcoholics. At least before the wall came down they had some semblance of society. Capitalism has given them nothing except consumer goods. What's there to celebrate when the institutions of Capitalism are collapsing before our eyes? East Germans aren't happier now. They just have more "things" to distract them from their unhappiness? Unified Germany means nothing in human terms.
