So. basically, then PBS is the channel for the intelligent americans?

that's how it seems... importing BBC programming kind of says it.. none of the other channels would import this kind of stuff. Doctor Who is a great exception because of it's wide audience range...

It's the channel that's publically funded & run by public donations ("by viewers like you and me" -- as their slogan says). All the others are corporately owned.
