Ke1 or Kg1 (instead of 40.cxb6) and black goes 40....a6!? trying to win the rook, white has 41. cxb6 axb5? 42. b7!! and white queens and wins.
According to Houdini black had a slight advantage after White moved the Queen to b5 (around -2.00) and when you take into account that at that moment materially Black was actually two pawns and the exchange down that's a lot of positional compensation.

@biernico it wins a rook, but after Qxg5 KC has to find very active moves because he's a piece up against 4 connected and passed pawns, while a queenexchange. the extra knight doesn't look like it will generate much play though, its all hitting air there
how about after 23. Qb5 just a simple d3. then if he blocked the pawn with his rook you could simply play Nc3, pinning his rook and his queen, and threatening all sort of nasties :P

He can't take with the pawn because the pin is broken so gxh4.
It saves your b7 pawn from the bishop's attack.
Queen has to move then you play gxh4.
