Whether hollywood presents an unfair image of certain nations is a different issue. War movies often simplify issues so as to be dramatic. Certainly something like Indiana Jones isn't meant to be taken seriously from a historical perspective. The germans in that were practically cartoon characters. Pre/post WWII germany isn't portrayed badly.

In regard to war movies, if by simplify action to be dramatic, you mean provide a hugely distorted, one sided view, that often attempts to rewrite history, then I agree.
Pre/post WW2 Germany is barely portrayed at all, it merely appears as a backdrop for some segment of a film.
In Hollywood films, America is virtually never the villain, it's always some specific section, such as the FBI, CIA, some unit of the military, etc, perhaps more importantly this is nearly always offset by their being an American group/individual who is doing the right thing, more importantly the story is usually told from the good guy(s) point of view. Which is in contrast to other countries which really are portrayed as the villain most of the time and little else.
This is of course comes as no surprise as the largest audience for Hollywood films is America and just as with every other aspect of the media (news, documentaries, etc) they have shown they can't cope when America is shown in a bad light relative to other countries. Over the top patriotism, religion and insular tenancies do not make an audience receptive to America as the villian.

This is from "Extras," and was made prior to Kate Winslet winning the oscar in a holocaust movie! When congratulating her, Ricky Gervais said, "I told you so."
This whole scene is superb acting from Winslet. Look at her false modesty when told how great an actress she is (eyes to the ceiling, "oh no" hardly spoken). Then the sharp eyes and tongue out of the mouth when saying "you're full of shit." Absolute classic.

maybe if by "segment" you mean the entire U.S. government. Your point seems very different from the one I was responding to though. Whether hollywood presents an unfair image of certain nations is a different issue. War movies often simplify issues so as to be dramatic. Certainly something like Indiana Jones isn't meant to be taken seriously from a historical perspective. The germans in that were practically cartoon characters. Pre/post WWII germany isn't portrayed badly.

In Hollywood films, America is virtually never the villain, it's always some specific section, such as the FBI, CIA, some unit of the military, etc, perhaps more importantly this is nearly always offset by their being an American group/individual who is doing the right thing, more importantly the story is usually told from the good guy(s) point of view. Which is in contrast to other countries which really are portrayed as the villain most of the time and little else.

This is of course comes as no surprise as the largest audience for Hollywood films is America and just as with every other aspect of the media (news, documentaries, etc) they have shown they can't cope when America is shown in a bad light relative to other countries. I had seen this video posted by someone else before when Kate was in Germany shooting the Reader, and I commented then that Kate was in fact shooting a film dealing with the holocoust and it was already getting strong Oscar nom potential buzz ( for the strong plot and of course Kate herself ) . Actually, not every movie who has the subject of the Holocaust gets an Oscar, in fact, few movies dealing the Holocaust have received Oscars. 1959's The Diary Of Anne Frank got a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Shelly Winters; next in line is Liza Minnelli for Cabaret 1972's Best Actress, followed by Meryl Streep's Best Actress in Sophie's Choice, 1982, then Roberto Benigni for Life Is Beautiful in 1998 Best Actor, then Adrien Brody for The Pianist 2002 and Kate Winslet's The Reader.

The only Best Picture to every receive an Oscar that was Holocaust related was Schindler's List in 1993. So, in regards to the myth that Oscars only recognize films about the Holocaust, it's just a myth. 1976's Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier didn't get Oscars, and Olivier was a Nazi dentist.

Forgot Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Robards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress for the year of 1977. 8 actors and won Best Pictures. So, no, not every film about the Holocaust will win Oscars, only the good ones worth recognizing because the actor was given a challenge and succeeded and the picture was relevant to modern politics ( SL was made in the time of the Bosnian/Kosovo "ethnic cleansing" a la Hitler in the early 90s)
