I saw these guys @ the Bondi Life Saver and became an instant fan, it was Sunday night, the place was jam packed and these guys just COOKED. They were awesome, but of course, with a line up like that and especially with the Gr8 Mal Eastick on guitar what else would anyone expect?. This awesome guitar solo still stands the test of the some 35 or so years later. Such a Gr8 era for good Old Aussie Rock :-) ... RIP Andy
It's amazing how much this band sounds like Little River Band. Especially the lead singer. I have not heard of this band before this. But the leader sounds just like Glenn Shorock from LRB. The other guy looks just like David Crosby when he was younger. Great sounding band though. Wish I had heard of these guys before. I definitely would have bought their albums.
@joevs21001 Yeah, Andrew Durant's (RIP) David Crosby-look is a dead give away as to what he's influences were ... I never noticed Mick Pealing's vocals resembling Glenn Shorock's voice - but it wouldn't be a surprise considering both bands came from the same city (Melbourne) and the popularity of LRB at the time may have influenced Mick's vocal delivery... they only released a couple of albums, but are still loved to this day.
@joevs21001 You still can, They made two albums, Land Of Fortune and, Paradise which contains this track. They are $10 each from JB Hi-Fi on line only, and if you live in Australia it's free delivery. Well worth purchasing.
The albums "Paradise" & "Land Of Fortune" have been re-released by Warners Australia . Picked up my copies at JB Hi-Fi today...stumbled upon them in the alternative section
He was such a talented man, Wish he was still around. For all of those fans who are unaware the Paradise album has been released on to CD, I got mine from Red Eye Music in York st Sydney, you can order it online from them as well,
NZOZ - Have you got 'Song for the Road'? I was reminiscing with a few of my mates at a recent brithday party about Stars. We saw these guys at the 'old' Panthers Leagues Club back in 1978. There was barely anyone there and Mick, Andy and Mal invited four of us back stage to have a few beers. It was just fantastic. We were only 17 at the time. They were incredibly talented musicians and tremendous blokes to boot. Such a shame Andy was taken from us at such a young age. What fabulous memories.
I've sent this song, on cassette way back in the 1980s, to fellow fans of America (remember 'Ventura Highway' et al') and they all raved about it back then. "You think you move mountains With your love so true
but tell me what happens
When the mountains move you."
Those words get me every time, and the two-part harmonies every bit as good as CSN&Y. Still remember first hearing “West is the Way” back in 1977/78 on radio, just after we had run from the East to settle in WA. Magic.
I agree totally.. ageless lyrics written by an exceptional talent taken from this world far too soon... i wish i had the chance to meet Andy- this song has had a lasting and endearing place in my heart.. it touches my soul everytime I play it. May his music and memory continue always ..thanks Andy x
I actually heard this song when I was a kid--and I'm in the U.S. these guys were awesome! I wonder if this is out on CD? I'd settle for an old album.. time to take a look online!!!
MUSHROOMS RECORDS Please please please re-release Paradise, Land of Fortune and 1157 on CD my vinyl is getting way too old to play.. Yes they weren't huge but they were a classic awesome aussie band
I'm ashamed to say I never knew these fellows were from Oz. When I heard the song for the first time a couple of years ago I thought it was Pure Prairie League, or maybe Sills and Croft! Nice stuff, can't beat gentle old country rock.
Oh wow! My sister just sent em the link to this. haven't seen it since 1977. I was in Blacktown Hosp with my newborn daughter when this was released. The hair, the clothes - just so 1977!
If anyone else is after Stars' two albums I can recommend the Oz music site MIDOZTOUCH for out of print Oz music.Worked for me after I wore my vinyl versions out.
nzoz You legend!! Thanks mate!!!1978 My 14th birthday I got 20 bucks so went down my local "Record" shop and bought my first albums,"Paradise" by Stars and "Sleeper Catcher" by LRB.LRB was ok but I absolutely hammered Paradise and later on "Land of Fortune".Two classic Aussie albums. So many great songs! Keep rockin' Mick and Mal E.!! RIP Andy, taken from us far too soon.
hey, great song thanks for the upload could anyone get a copy of goldfever, thats my fav one, thumbs up if this was the best band australia has had, and will ever have cheers :)
@antsdick and yet DC was the drug addict that stills walks this earth today, while our skinny DC-look-a-like guitarist is 30 years gone, due to cancer at age 25.
i believe beeb bertles and the little river band found these guys and had them open some of thier concerts way back. it may also be true that beeb bertles helped these guys get a record deal with mushroom records also. loved this song when it came out and i just got my hands on all of thier albums today. i went to countdown when i was 12 and there they were doing a cover of i shot the sherrif. i also caught them opening before a skyhooks concert in melbourne in 77 or 76. great band. timeless.
... I remember Stars performing on countdown in the '70's and Mick used to wear a long feather earring with his long luscious hair... He STILL gorgeous and playing the traps round Melbourne...
I had this song in my collection for years and have been trying to put a name to it, and it turns out to be Mick Pealings band Stars, DOH! I mixed an album for Mick and I could have just asked him!
yep, great band, great memorial concert, and shit, i forgot about how high waistbands were in the 70s, a hell of a lot higher than in the 80s or 90s....:)
i was only just 11 & remember the 1st time i heard this song, it was in dads car radio, we were driving into town to trade the shit box Ford for a Kingswood ....how ironic the words seemed...."if you cant run with the tide you got yourself to blame" LMFAO......
I remember listening to this when we were heading off from Sydney down to Ulladulla on a camping trip back in 77. I was young then and married. Now I'm old and divorced. These clips just bring it all back - and I wouldn't have missed those days for anything.
This chorus of this song helped me get my messed up and rather tragic life back on track. It has been an inspiration for me over the last 30 years, having gained a university degree and a great career through hard work and determination.
Great song and message...Sometimes I listen to it and I'm thinking about others who should hear this. Then at other times, I feel it's message is directed at me.
growing up with this song meant a lot.. its still so special. 30+ years ago and what a time it woz.. the 70's... if only things didnt change, but as the song says "nothin stays the same"... if you were a teen when this was out, like i was, then you seen the world while it was still pretty innocent... thanks nzoz and the aussie music scene for this song... timeless.. RIP Andy, u did well mate
This band played LIVE really well ,many people went to see them in the day just to see and hear good muso's play .
