  • This is such an incredible speech. I cried because I know I should do more with my life to help others. I will listen to this again on my own graduation day. Hopefully I will have changed my life for the better by then...

  • She would probably hate this, but she is probably the best female orator I have heard since Margaret Thatcher.

  • That's personally what I think determines her success. Not only from the number of books she's sold, how much money she's earned and how popular she's become but how she touches the hearts of people all over the world. She's certainly touched mine. And I hope one day to do the same.

  • Brilliant, touching, inspiring and true speech.

  • God save Jo!

  • Inspiring and wise

  • T_T

  • WOW. Truly powerful.

  • Commercial for amnesty??

  • 4:46 I remember every word JK had said everyday of my life.

  • I'm 17 and in Arts school. I've been having a tough time because I'm there for the creative writing more than drawing and don't want to waste my time but this speech has definitely given me some hope and confidence. Thank you JK Rowling.

  • I regret not enjoying and valuing education when I had the chance. Never made real friends and don't have memories worth remembering. I'm only 25 and already feel like I've wasted so much of my life...

  • @blablaat ditto mate

  • @blablaat I understand exactly what you mean.

  • Comment removed

  • @blablaat Mate, totally get what you mean. I'm only 22 and I already feel like that. Time to change my approach, I think! No use being miserable forever.

  • Brilliant. Thanks for uploading this \!

  • I have listened to this speech over and over and over again!!! The core of my writer being soooo stirred and soaring!!! Thanks Joe Rowling!!

  • Thank you for everything JK, you truely are the best person i'm aware of .

  • what a speech!!!!

  • I'd never forget a speech like this.

  • if only I had been there, listening to every word she said .She made me feel how childish and shallow I am. She's woken me up

  • my hero!

  • *bawl*

I don't know how many times I've watched this & I still tear up every time. It's especially poignant to me now, having just graduated from Exeter (where Jo went to uni).

Shame that the several-minute-long standing ovation has been cut off!

  • Jo Rowling is the younger, female and (far) less manipulative muggle equivalent of Albus Dumbledore.

  • I'm deeply impressed. This is beyond outstanding

  • I feel like I can really relate to JK Rowling. She is my new inspiration.

  • "It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well." ~J.K. Rowling

    What an accurate self-description JK!

  • You just cant help but hang on to every word

  • Wow.

  • This woman is my childhood hero... Most things people grow out of, but what JK Rowling has given so many people, will never vanish.

  • Like many others, found JK Rowlings speech wise and moving. And, as a professional author and speaker in the field of personal / spiritual growth, I'll try to articulate something I sense beneath the surface of this remarkable woman — something that may never appear on her C.V. or biography, because we mistake people for the roles they play, rarely looking past convenient labels. I believe that the words, presence of the woman known as JK Rowling reflect the heart and spirit of saints and sages.

  • Rowling is an excellent public speaker. Her life is a wonderful example of the importance of never giving up, and an inspiration to make the most of whatever talents we may have.

  • 3 people are mad she took their names for Death Eaters.

  • Incredible speech.

  • I had goosebumps through out the whole speech.

  • @Tenwaystokill I was crying for some weird reason. From about halfway through. I don't know why, maybe the wisdom got to me.

  • I am profoundly humbled by her words and her experiences.

  • Inspiring and humbling

    Best speech I've ever heard

  • Let me just say this to JK, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

  • That was the best speech i ever heard

  • I'm crying :c

  • How do people even get bored while she's speaking up there? Look at those faces.

That's J.K. fucking Rowling, show some respect, muggles.

  • what an inspiration

  • Comment removed

  • Unbelieveable.

  • i wish i could BE HER

  • She's simply wonderful. She's definetely someone that I look up to.

  • She is my childhood.

  • One day I hope to open the dictionary and look under 'literary genius' and see her name.

  • i hope england is sensible enough to put a plaque in her honor in Westminster Abbey alongside Austen and Shakespeare. She has accomplished so much and is at least equal to them. What's more, she in herself is a role model and a symbol of hard work and perseverance. Thank you JK Rowling for everything you have done for the world, you have truly bettered it with your presence.

  • @noodlecullen We 'the UK' won't do that most likely. She's a wonderful woman, but Westminster isn't the right place to put a plaque for her. She needs her own memorial in London, a statue, because that's better for someone like her. Westminster just wouldn't be right, it's too ... historical. Not that I'm saying she's not amazing, I totally agree with you, it's just ... I can't see it happening. She deserves a statue of herself in London somehwere so everyone can see it and remember her.

  • Jo Rowling has touched my life just by existing.

  • I'm going to graduate next year and I can see myself watching this hours after I get my diploma and still be inspired after the number of times I have watched this.

  • highest IQ and imagination

  • 0:46, she has such still hands!!!!

  • I keep coming back to this speech. Such wonderful and wise words from a truly remarkable human being. I am grateful for everything she has given me.

  • Words cannot accurately express how great this speech was, nor how great this woman is. It is so incredible to see a billionaire whose money is of little importance to her. A woman who can possess all the material goods she could possibly crave chooses instead to lecture on kindness, on generosity.

I do not mean to disparage her peers, but it would be dishonest of me to say that she and them are alike. Everything she does, everything she writes, is based on values and beliefs.

    She is incredible.

  • I had three parents who raised me. My mother, my father, and J.K. Rowling.

  • @DeKleineGenevieve this is the most wonderful statement i have read in a long time.

  • @DeKleineGenevieve

I believe gpoy is the phrase?

  • What a brilliant, inspiring and timeless speech. Rowling is a truly wonderful person and a positive influence on anyone she touches.

  • I've watched this speech at least 5 times over the past 2 yrs.

  • She's amazing. This speech is so inspiring. Her books got me happy again after my life took a major turn for the worse, and I'm sure they've done the same for many others as well. Even when Harry Potter is over for good, the world will live on, I'm sure of it. She's an amazing writer and the world is lucky to have her.

  • she's just absolutely brilliant.

  • @LittleMonsterGirlie It's been 13 years ... and Harry Potter isn't some book in a library gathering dust or some DVD in a store ... getting ready to be thrown away. The midnight book releases were started by the Harry Potter fandom, starting a new legacy. The word Muggle has spread beyond its Harry Potter origins, becoming one of few pop culture words to land in the Oxford English Dictionary. But that's not it, those things are just to highlight the basline of what Harry Potter has done.

  • HOW DOES THIS NOT HAVE MORE VIEWS

  • 2:37 the guy in the right-down corner *wow! look at that cloud over there! Is it the dark mark???*

  • the 3 people that disliked this are still mad that she killed dobby

  • Such an inspiring woman!

  • @LittleMonsterGirlie Get the hell off the internet! It is her first series and she fucking took the publishing world, millions of people by storm! With her first series, she has made fucking history, affected the lives of so many children and adults etc. I say WE don't give her enough credit for it. There is so much more, than what appears flat on the page. So much more.

  • Rowling is such an inspiration. She's a wonderful human being, and her life's work so far is a marvellous example of how following your dreams can change the world. I hope some the 88,000 of us who have watched this video can have the courage to do the same. =]

  • Wonderful.!

  • This is beautiful!

  • I hope the students got her moving message. Torture under Bush and Cheney was an accepted practice. The US will have to live with this burden forever.

  • with her experiences and insights, it will be good to have her in politics. perhaps she can help make the change the world needs. then again, good is an understatement.

  • Great Speech!!!!Just brillant.love u JK Rowling:)

  • She seems to be in HP though. HAHA.

  • Amazing. Simply and truly amazing and awe-inspiring.

  • that was a damn good speech. jk rowling is awesome.

  • It's really neat how her experience working for Amnesty Intl clearly informed the books with respect to oppressive regimes and what not under the dark lord. Can't you imagine the snobs in the English Lit department sneering at her (because so many lit people deride her work as not having literary merit)? The jokes on them, her books plugged into the human sub concious is a really profound way!

  • I just about cried at the end of this. JK Rowling has a wonderful gift with words. And she gives someone like me, who has always been afraid of failure and has had her fair share of it, hope that something better will come in my future if I stick to what I believe in doing. Thank you JKR.

  • JKR for prime minister!!!

  • @snake1141 I want JK Rowling for president as well!! :) She'd be the most amazing president ever!!

  • Comment removed

  • WOW...i totally choked up, she is completely unpretentious and humble and truly compassionate, and so inspiring!!, such beautifully chosen words. Practically every sentence she said gives a message. i am glad a person like this was able to achieve such greatness through her writing!

Honestly one of the best commencement-speeches anyone has ever given, you could tell she had the entire audience hanging onto her every word. JK Rowling what you spoke was truth and you are officially my HERO! :-D

  • @xochil5fluer shes bloody amazing isnt she? Im fighting tears but they are still leaking. Shes so dang strong and shes funny too this is the women who we shud point to for president or someone because shed know how to run things

  • I would cry if we had such a speech at our univercity

  • She is my hero.

  • one of the most fascinating things about it is its simplicity; english is not my mother tongue and yet i completely understood it and it absolutely imbued me!

  • what is this speech about i have an english project to do and i dont understand it some1 explain it to me

  • @jene37 If you would like me to transcript it for you I will.Or is it just the meaning of the speech you would like?

  • @jene37

She spoke about the importance of failure in that although failure is not a good thing in itself, the things we learn from it about ourselves and the world around us are incredibly important.

Also, we have the ability to empathise for other people which is very important. Choosing to ignore another's suffering will not shield you from suffering yourself; if anything you will suffer more.We have the power to shape the world around us and change people's lives for the better.

  • "They can refuse to hear screams or peer inside cages... I would envy people like that, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do... I think the willfully unimaginative see more monsters... without ever committing evil ourselves, we collude with it through our apathy." It amazes me how well she can describe evil and yet she has remained so compassionate. I think that's why she has been able to impact the world.

  • bored bimbo at 0:52 lols

  • "As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters."

  • Our Inescapable connection with the outside world, the fact we touch other people's lives simply by existing. What a deeply philosophical sentence embedded dashes of colours of quantum mechanics... Fascinating~!

  • Stupendous~

  • This speech brought me to tears :) She is absolutely the most amazing writer I know of, and such a beautiful person! I can only hope to become half the writer she is through my college experience.

  • After this speech, Miss J.K Rowling, I hereby forgive you for killing off Hedwig.

  • This is the most amazing speech I have ever heard in my life. This woman is an angel. She's my hero, and her heart, her mind, and her imagination have changed my world. I'm gonna remember this speech for the rest if my life, and I wasn't even there. No commencement speaker can beat that.

  • we dont need magic to save the world

  • Incredible.

  • I cried

  • Truly amazing. Inspiring to the core.

  • This speech gave me chills.

  • "People who have been kind enough not to sue me when I took their names for Death Eaters."

    Now THOSE are good friends.

  • Comment removed

  • Really? You must not have heard too many. It is not bad though.

  • wow, such an excellent speech, one of the best ones i've ever heard.. i'm glad i accidentally stumbled upon this, very powerful and thought provoking.

  • Watch the Steve Jobs Stanford commencement speech if you liked this one. Enjoy!

  • aww I stumbled on this and it makes me smile. :)

  • made me cry.

    what a speech.

  • JK Rowling is the greatest role model of our time. Her stories are a brilliant form of escapism, yet she is firmly grounded in reality. Her speech made me cry, as I do each time I hear her speak publicly. She's amazing

  • great speech, very inspiring

  • i wish j.k. rowling would speak at MY graduation.

    great speech!

  • Life changing.

  • untouchably good!

  • This speech is probably the most thought-provoking I've ever heard or watched. Her natural humility, kindness and honest vulnerability combined with her intelligence and writing skills just sets it apart. JK Rowling is simply an amazing person, I've never really had any sort of "idol" or "hero" growing up, but I think you would be hard put to find a better role-model than her.

  • What is up with the guy in the middle of the crowd at 2:51.

    A little creepy...

  • @eddiesanford07

Omg, that is the scariest screen shot ever. Not only him, but the people around him look creepy.

  • @anythingnew they're death eaters!

  • This speech was immensely transformative. I feel shaken, touched and inspired. Hooray for J K Rowling!

  • I loved it.

  • Wow...(applauding)

  • Definitely among the best speeches I have ever heard.

  • That speech was wonderful.

I agree, hats off to JKR.

  • Thank you for changing my reality.

  • Yea Class of '08!

  • One of the most inspirational speech i had ever heard. Hats off to JKR

  • Such elegant writing.... :)

  • JK Rowling speech was the most thoughtful speeches I have ever heard. I hope Obama hears it.

  • (standing and applauding)

  • wonderful...

  • I love her so much!

A brilliant, profound person with such a sens of humor!!

  • JK Rowling is already a legend, she is without a doubt the greatest writer of all times, just as fantastic as JR Tolkien and Shakespear. This address will be remembered for a long time.

Love to JK Rowling who has changed my life for the better.

  • @RickiLyng That is ridiculous. If you ever read one paragraph of Shakespeare you would realize how utterly wrong your comment is.

  • @eXPerienceyeah Writing is subjective. If somebody believes JK Rowling to be as good as Shakespear that is no more wrong than it is right. My own personal opinion would argue she is a greater writer as she managed to captivate the entire world, people of all ages and levels of intellect, to love one story in a way Shakespeare never did. He was very class focussed. You're entitled to your opinion but you have no right to tell someone there's is wrong.

  • what a great speech

  • JK Rowling is amazing and a very wise individual. Her talent and gift as a writer are equal to her beauty as a person. She will be remembered for countless generations for her writing, humor and humble nature.

  • The most incredible speech Ive ever heard

  • she is a beautiful women. but she has such a sad face...:( even her smiles look sad

  • I was there!

definitely one of the most inspiring days of my life.

  • Mopping the floors? Lol. No that's sick that you were there. Are you a Harvard grad?

  • nope, but my brother was. I'm just a big JKR fan.

  • That's awesome man. I bet it had to be a great experience for you :)

  • Love her. She's wise and funny at the same time, a terrific combiantion

  • and..... a brilliant writer and a huge inspiration.

  • Lmao. I love the part about naming Death eaters after her best friends! LOVE it! I always wondered where she came up with some of those names. :D

  • the speech was great and funny at the same time i think jo is great

besides i didn know she had always wanted to write novels

i thought she'd just had this good idea of a boy studying magic :)

that's great cause its like her dream did come true

  • She wrote her first book when she was only 7 years old. It's about a bunny. So yeah, she always aspired to be a writer. Her story is so great...someone needs to do a movie about her life. I would love to see that.

  • for using their names for death eaters lol

  • What did she say in the near end why her friends did not sue her for?

  • i skipped thru the bill gates one cos it was crap till the end part. but this one makes a lot of sense

  • hi! I really didn't expect her to deliver such a wonderful and magical speech! Just as she said...it is not how long it is but how good it is!!! But just the same...a TEN-STAR ranking! hahaha!

  • I'd like to meet her friends. That's so funny! Death Eaters. I'm writing a book, and I'm using my friends names too. It's pretty fun.

Such an amazing and great speech! She's so wise, and kind, and knowledgable. I hope I can meet this great woman one day in my life.

  • I didn't know she had it in her..

What a person. Awesome speech too.

  • Jeez, brought tears to my eyes.

  • yeah - to mine too :)

  • Wow, what a speach.

  • I'm hb151, and I approve of this speech.

  • very inspiring speech!
