I love on the episode "Chef Aid" from the 2nd season of Southpark where the have Primus playing. They are all up on stage in their duck outfits and Les says something like "Chef has been behind us since the beginning, no matter how much we sucked! We love that man."

Getting ready to go see the Primus show in Pittsburgh tonight! Cannot even explain how jazzed I am to see Les in person, for the first time!! I haven't listened to anything but Primus since I got the tickets last week.. now the only question is if I will be able to restrain myself from leaping up on stage to try and kiss the fingers that do such amazing things on the bass......

It feels moot to talk about it because everyone else is, but Les said in an interview that Larry pretty much wrote this entire song. Every other track on Green Naugahyde is bass-centric, this is one where he allows the bass to take a backseat and round out the song. And knowing when not to be overbearing is a sign of GOOD MUSICIANSHIP.
I was actually expecting not to like this, since their early work (Frizzle Fry, Pork Soda) is my favorite, but shit. Its creepy and awesome just like i was expecting

@TheSathingtonWaltz I have to say that I am insanely jealous, I honestly don't think there is a day that goes by where I don't mention the love of my life. Les Claypool is a god.

Les has ALWAYS been hated on by tech-geeks and "schooled" musicians because his technique is HOMEMADE AND INNOVATIVE. just because he doesnt suck big fat boring dick like victor wooten or have a huge ego does NOT mean hes talentless. AVERAGE?!!? you fool, you sorry, sorry, foolish, tiny peckered man. LONG LIVE CLAYPOOL, LONG LIVE THE DEFIANCE OF TRADITION!!!!
@adamtheskunk You are right and wrong. Les is playing the easiest part on this song. Larry is playing complicated stuff. Les is a prominent bassist, and can be often outshined by the other players. However, Les isn't an average bassist. In fact, he's one of the best. Take another listen to songs like Jerry was a Racecar Driver and Tommy the Cat
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm a musician, and to end all debates, Les Claypool is a prominent bass guitarist, but talent wise, he's average. Listen to this song, Being a person who as played ALL 3 of the instruments on display here on his song and being a primus fan, Les is playing the easiest part on this song. Just because he's jamming an upright doesnt mean he's the most intricate on stage, if you play bass, guitar and drums, and have been in a band, you'd be smart enough to know that les is playing the simplest part.
@adamtheskunk Of course you had to put "I'm a musician" at the beginning of this comment. As if it qualifies you for anything. Anyone can be a "musician" these days. Yes, you are right in saying that Les has the easiest part in this specific song and that Ler's role is very complex, but to say Les is an average bassist is just asinine. I'd love to see YOU, Mr. Musician, slap out Over the Electric Grapevine or Tommy the Cat as intricately as Les.
@kelthanius my dude I'm a musician myself also but dang you have to realize that even simplicity can be the most complex you don't have to be the greatest musician to write a good jam but les is just good enough that he can be as simple as he wants listen to "my name is mudd" that is some of the simplest riff but the rythm is what gives it its sound so try to think before you express your opinion
@kelthanius I agree with everything said here other then 'Anyone can be a "Musician" now days'. I find that offensive. Real life is not rock band, You don't just pick up a fucking guitar or drumsticks and all of a sudden play tough shit after sitting there for a week. That's not how it works.
@kelthanius someone clearly doesn't listen to primus much. So what he got one easy part in a song. Les is a talented bass player with a unique technique and stand above many other in his genre ov music.
@kelthanius I would have to agree with adamtheskunk. There are so so so many people there who can have it with the bass guitar. Skill wise, Les is average. Those who play in some show bands here are way way way more skillful. That is a fact. But musically, no one can argue Les's talent in creating music.
@adamtheskunk Are you kidding? The drumming is so easy a caveman is doing it, lol. I don't think that Les is aiming to be the constant spotlight. It doesn't have to be the most technical to be good music, but I do love it when they all break out into a mind-blowing jam.
Got my tickets for Albany, NY in September yesterday. Pre-release tickets went out to people signed up for the newsletter so I got lucky... front row.
@adamtheskunk But I think that a song doesn't need to be difficult or complex to be good. Same with talent. I think Claypool is a very talented man because if you hear Primus' albums or his side projects you hear some fancy ambiances and cool riffing. Playing a song it's the easier part. The difficult thing is composing it. I can also play these three instruments and I can play a lot of cover of my favourite bands... But I don't think I could ever compose like them ;)
@jkgatling Primus, Sausage, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brain, The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Claypool and the Holy Mackerel, and his solo work.
@adamtheskunk Probably in this song but If you think les is average, you have to listen to every fucking song primus has done. For me, he´s the most creative bassist of all times. Maybe Sheehan (for example) is faster, and has probably a better developed techique, but in creative matters les beats the shit out of him. Have you even seen Les tapping? What´s the name of your band by the way? I´m curious because if you think les is average, then you´d better be the greatest musician alive.
@adamtheskunk Just because he's playing the easiest part of a song doesn't mean its bad. Not every song as to be technical. Listen to other Primus songs, theyre more technical.
@adamtheskunk playing music is like having a conversation, you have to let others speak. If there is no one else talking then it's not a conversation. Go listen to victor wooten if you want to hear nothing except complex bass scales.
@adamtheskunk Signature comment of the unaccomplished musician. "To end all debates" My friend, no one gives two fucks about what you think. And no I'm not 'mad'. I've been playing bass for 12 years and do not feel entitled to go around claiming what I know should put anyone else's opinions to rest. And it's always people who play multiple instruments good enough to have an attitude that spout this kind of crap. Also note that texture is just as much of a tool to primus as the notes themselves.
@adamtheskunk Technical ability /= songwriting ability. Les is great because of his style, his approach to the bass, and his lyrics. It's different than the normal. That's why people like Les. Sure, he has some flashy licks, but when you break it down, really, there aren't any complex Primus (or Les Claypool, for that matter) songs. It's all about the feel, the sound, that the 3 create. This song is a great example of this. There isn't another big act out there doing anything like this.
@polkafrenzy666 you right but i think homeboy meant that while certain riffs are complex, the composition of the song as a whole is usually not that complex when it comes to Primus. either way Primus sucks
@adamtheskunk haha.. yeah one song is not quite enough to formulate an opinion on. and playing the most intricate piece out of everyone on stage doesn't equate into talent. sorry
@adamtheskunk Who gives a shit. To be honest, busy bass lines sound like shit. This is one of my favorite of his lines precicisely because he doesnt overplay at all.
Everyone keeps wanting to hear Pork Soda 2, not gonna happen. Les and Primus have always been about reinventing themselves, that's why you don't hear a bunch of top 40 bullshit like bands who just do the same shit over and over. That's also why every single album of theirs has kicked ass. PRIMUS SUCKS!
@mrpelon1000 i would hope they get a hit too. but lets face it. take one look at mtv and other top 40s channels and it is easy to tell that top selling hits from actual sweet sounding innovative talented bands just isn't going to happen soon. but a guy can dream.
Just saw Primus at Allgood...the played the breakdown section of this song for like 3 minutes...it was a complete transcendent jam...one of the most awesome things I've ever heard in any live performance...
@baylzebub I don't know if I'd call it "new". It feels like Les hasn't written a real song since Antipop. =/
As for them saying the album sounds like Frizzle Fry, I think it sounds more like Brown Album crossed with Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People and the occassional dip into the Punchbowl.
IO just have to day to the ppl that might not like the new stuff. I have only listens to like maybe 10 songs from their past (only the ones with vid), and it's all fucked up, this song fits like a glove into their weird mix LOL!!!
It's just like Primus, they sound like them, but they don't at the same time. I don't like this song right off the bat, but then again, I didn't like Primus at first, I think the bridge at 3:12 is the saving grace for this song, for me at least. Even if I did love this song though, Lee Van Cleef is most DEFINITELY my favourite one I've heard so far.
Man, this sounds badass. It doesn't sound like Primus, but yet at the same time it does. Good music is good music, and this is definitely that. I dig this one alot.
Let me tell you my background: I've been the biggest Primus fan for years and years. I've purchased every Primus CD there is as well as some of Les' side projects. Holy Mackerel, Bucket of Bernie Brains, Oysterhead etc. I'm not liking this new Primus because it sounds like a side project band Les would be in. It's repetitive and I hate to say it, boring. I reserve final judgment until I can buy it but that's the vibe I'm getting so far.
This is very excellent song and us Primus fans are very loyal and will find you oh yes critics beware we will find you in the night for your misgivings.
Personally, I don't really care if the album art work doesn't look like the old ones. I don't care if doesn't sound like the Primus I know. It's still going to be great to hear their new music, they've been creating excellent music for a very long time. In fact when I came home from the hospital, I was treated to listening to "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" when I got inside. It's just great to hear more from them. PRIMUS SUCKS!!! (any fan would know that saying)
To anyone saying this doesnt sound like primus- You obviously have only heard radio hits and not their entire discography otherwise you would hear primus' finger prints all over these songs.
yeah man i really have to say; it's not the primus that i know ,i just heard 4 new primus songs,it's more les claypool and the rest but hey "that's just a matter of opinion"
@metalboto Can't help but disagree, Ler and Jay are just as essential as Les. And they all have their moments on these new songs. IMO Ler shines on this song and Jay really shines on Green Ranger.
@kelthanius I agree completely. I think they've really come full circle in the time that's passed by since the recording and release of 'Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People'. The newer material sounds more 'Frizzle Fry'-esque than anything Primus or Claypool have released in decades. I'm beyond excited to BUY a copy of 'Green Naugahyde' when it comes out in September.
@kelthanius IMO you can't really catogorize Primus because they ALWAYS changed their sound. so..to say it doesn't sound like "Primus" or it doesn't sound like "Les CLaypool" is kinnda wrong because..Primus was almost a genre of it's own and ALWAYS changed it's sound.
I don't really like the album artwork I'm seeing for this one. It just doesn't feel Primus. The font's all wrong, too. I mean, the Pork Soda pig is just awesome, and so is Captain Shiner, the Frizzle Fry pan / head, and the epic Sea of Cheese... this one just doesn't feel right.
Les has done it all now....he is the bass god.

LONG LIVE CLAYPOOL, LONG LIVE THE DEFIANCE OF TRADITION!!!!

adamtheskunk 7 months ago
@adamtheskunk You are right and wrong. Les is playing the easiest part on this song. Larry is playing complicated stuff. Les is a prominent bassist, and can be often outshined by the other players. However, Les isn't an average bassist. In fact, he's one of the best. Take another listen to songs like Jerry was a Racecar Driver and Tommy the Cat

I'm a musician, and to end all debates, Les Claypool is a prominent bass guitarist, but talent wise, he's average. Listen to this song, Being a person who as played ALL 3 of the instruments on display here on his song and being a primus fan, Les is playing the easiest part on this song. Just because he's jamming an upright doesnt mean he's the most intricate on stage, if you play bass, guitar and drums, and have been in a band, you'd be smart enough to know that les is playing the simplest part.
adamtheskunk 7 months ago
@adamtheskunk Of course you had to put "I'm a musician" at the beginning of this comment. As if it qualifies you for anything. Anyone can be a "musician" these days. Yes, you are right in saying that Les has the easiest part in this specific song and that Ler's role is very complex, but to say Les is an average bassist is just asinine. I'd love to see YOU, Mr. Musician, slap out Over the Electric Grapevine or Tommy the Cat as intricately as Les.

LeoXmayhem2 6 months ago

DrEchocide 6 months ago
@kelthanius someone clearly doesn't listen to primus much. So what he got one easy part in a song. Les is a talented bass player with a unique technique and stand above many other in his genre ov music.
soldierovmetal 5 months ago
@kelthanius i would love to see him so i could "kiss him upside the cranium with an aluminum baseball bat"
phukifiy 5 months ago
@kelthanius I would have to agree with adamtheskunk. There are so so so many people there who can have it with the bass guitar. Skill wise, Les is average. Those who play in some show bands here are way way way more skillful. That is a fact. But musically, no one can argue Les's talent in creating music.

nagmalitongyawa 5 months ago
@adamtheskunk Are you kidding? The drumming is so easy a caveman is doing it, lol. I don't think that Les is aiming to be the constant spotlight. It doesn't have to be the most technical to be good music, but I do love it when they all break out into a mind-blowing jam.
Got my tickets for Albany, NY in September yesterday. Pre-release tickets went out to people signed up for the newsletter so I got lucky... front row.
shepar38h 7 months ago
@adamtheskunk But I think that a song doesn't need to be difficult or complex to be good. Same with talent. I think Claypool is a very talented man because if you hear Primus' albums or his side projects you hear some fancy ambiances and cool riffing. Playing a song it's the easier part. The difficult thing is composing it. I can also play these three instruments and I can play a lot of cover of my favourite bands... But I don't think I could ever compose like them ;)

@adamtheskunk lol, you are an idiot if you think Les Claypool is an "average" bassist.

Rejito 7 months ago
@adamtheskunk Just because he's playing the easiest part of a song doesn't mean its bad. Not every song as to be technical. Listen to other Primus songs, theyre more technical.
razer3230 6 months ago
@adamtheskunk playing music is like having a conversation, you have to let others speak. If there is no one else talking then it's not a conversation. Go listen to victor wooten if you want to hear nothing except complex bass scales.
STE4LYOURFACE 6 months ago
@adamtheskunk Signature comment of the unaccomplished musician. "To end all debates" My friend, no one gives two fucks about what you think. And no I'm not 'mad'. I've been playing bass for 12 years and do not feel entitled to go around claiming what I know should put anyone else's opinions to rest. And it's always people who play multiple instruments good enough to have an attitude that spout this kind of crap. Also note that texture is just as much of a tool to primus as the notes themselves.
captainshiner3 6 months ago
@adamtheskunk Technical ability /= songwriting ability. Les is great because of his style, his approach to the bass, and his lyrics. It's different than the normal. That's why people like Les. Sure, he has some flashy licks, but when you break it down, really, there aren't any complex Primus (or Les Claypool, for that matter) songs. It's all about the feel, the sound, that the 3 create. This song is a great example of this. There isn't another big act out there doing anything like this.

Just saw Primus at Allgood...the played the breakdown section of this song for like 3 minutes...it was a complete transcendent jam...one of the most awesome things I've ever heard in any live performance...

this has residents written all over it. Its definitely not classic primus but its a great new direction. Its more open and improvisational.
baylzebub 7 months ago

MastersChest 8 months ago 2
Let me tell you my background: I've been the biggest Primus fan for years and years. I've purchased every Primus CD there is as well as some of Les' side projects. Holy Mackerel, Bucket of Bernie Brains, Oysterhead etc. I'm not liking this new Primus because it sounds like a side project band Les would be in. It's repetitive and I hate to say it, boring. I reserve final judgment until I can buy it but that's the vibe I'm getting so far.
YourAtheistNeighbor 8 months ago
This is very excellent song and us Primus fans are very loyal and will find you oh yes critics beware we will find you in the night for your misgivings.

Personally, I don't really care if the album art work doesn't look like the old ones. I don't care if doesn't sound like the Primus I know. It's still going to be great to hear their new music, they've been creating excellent music for a very long time. In fact when I came home from the hospital, I was treated to listening to "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" when I got inside. It's just great to hear more from them. PRIMUS SUCKS!!! (any fan would know that saying)

To anyone saying this doesnt sound like primus- You obviously have only heard radio hits and not their entire discography otherwise you would hear primus' finger prints all over these songs.
sociopathix 8 months ago
yeah man i really have to say; it's not the primus that i know ,i just heard 4 new primus songs,it's more les claypool and the rest but hey "that's just a matter of opinion"
metalboto 8 months ago
@metalboto Can't help but disagree, Ler and Jay are just as essential as Les. And they all have their moments on these new songs. IMO Ler shines on this song and Jay really shines on Green Ranger.
kelthanius 8 months ago 13
@kelthanius I agree completely. I think they've really come full circle in the time that's passed by since the recording and release of 'Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People'. The newer material sounds more 'Frizzle Fry'-esque than anything Primus or Claypool have released in decades. I'm beyond excited to BUY a copy of 'Green Naugahyde' when it comes out in September.
Drratburn 8 months ago
@kelthanius that drum riff on green ranger is just soooooooooooo damn juicy.
dtonbassist 7 months ago
@kelthanius I think what he meant was that this sounds more like Les Claypool's solo projects than the Primus we knew. I still love it though.
frididjurhuus 6 months ago
@kelthanius IMO you can't really catogorize Primus because they ALWAYS changed their sound. so..to say it doesn't sound like "Primus" or it doesn't sound like "Les CLaypool" is kinnda wrong because..Primus was almost a genre of it's own and ALWAYS changed it's sound.
JudasAngel666 6 months ago
@metalboto Primus live sounds way different than how they do in the studio.
