Tres joli!!! I really miss the dulcet tones of Nana in my life these days: she is never played on the radio - even on the "easy listening" channels, sigh. She had SUCH a clear, soothing sound to her voice, and her productions were always polished and professional yet also touching. This post brings back some GOOD memoires!!!
izany â! This song is naturally beautiful whoever performs it. Nana Mouskouri has yet the best voice to sing it and as a rare thing that should be pointed to, lyrics in french fit very well the purpose. Most of the time there's barely a shadow of relationship between original english songs and their french "translations". Just an "exception française"... Just listen for instance to Dylan's "tambourine man" that's dealing with drugs and what french singer crisscrossed it.
This song uses the melody of Gordon Lightfoot's "Song For A Winter's Night", which she also recorded in English. The French version, however, has entirely different lyrics. Even though she is not as well known in the US, Lightfoot's official bio makes note of her wonderful covers of his songs. She also recorded a French version of Sundown, but I have been unable to locate it ...
