I don't want to be a Tom Cruise fan...but then there is this movie and Jerry McGuire and Born on the 4th of July....I have to begrudingly admit...He Really Was Really Good in these movies....Damn
@olexboy Have you seen the Court Room scene near the end of "The Caine Mutiny",where Humphrey Bogart is questioned by Jose Ferrer? It's every bit as rivetting as this one.
I heard somewhere that during this entire scene (and all of the downtime between each shot and the next one) Jack Nicholson scared the hell out of some of the people on the set by staying in character as much as possible. He acted like Col. Jessup, he talked like Col. Jessup, he stayed in "tight uniform" and everything.
I have watch Tom Cruise in many movies and one of his BEST scene EVER is without words (6.59 - 7:30). That is not easy to pull off and admire his ability to shift gears of emotions. You can see it in his face, like the whole world has come to a crashing end.
You could take any one of Nicholson's great performances throughout his career and any lesser actor would call it the crowning moment of his life---and Jack? Jack just rattled them off one after another after another. An amazing, transcendent talent.
Ha! Like the little back-talk the judge gave him at the end. I don't doubt that high ranking military officers have earned their due respect, but there ain't a rank in the world that gives you the right to be an ass towards others. You are only as powerful as the people who put you there in the first place, so have a little respect towards others because without them you wouldn't be where you are now.
6:53 - "These two marines are on trial for their lives": meaning a possible death penalty. It's YOU who put them into that position, you s.o.b. (see last words in part 2...)
I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, but I think he does O.K. in this film. When you consider he had to handle Jack Nicholson,he gave quite a performance. I really like this movie, and watch it periodically, mainly for this confrontation.
@MOGGS1942 I watch it every 6-12 months myself! Definitely agree with you on the Class of the Actors...and the Writers...well moulded...well formed...Well excecuted film!
I'll bet whenever Jack Nicholson orders Mountain Dew Code Red at a restaurant, the waiter brings him his drink and asks "DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED?" and then Nicholson says "YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I DID!"
"Do you solemnly swear that the testimony you will give in this General Court Marcial will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God?"
Kaffee is a little snot...a ruling-class snot...Jessup is the type of person who keeps this nation strong and free...LOOLOL!! I'm in Quantico now!! haha...
@XxowendanxX BS. You know damn well that the movie isn't really about whether or not it's right to order a code red (although it WAS illegal to begin with). It's about how Jessup let two marines take the fall in order to save his own skin. BTW, wtf are you knuckleheads taking it so personally with a lawyer who is doing his job? He isn't arguing the moral issues of giving a code red, he's trying to prove that the marines were following orders. ffs did you even watch the movie?
I may not have been in the military myself or may not have family members who serve in it themselves these days. But looking and listening to Col. Jessup in this scene; talking about how taking out Santiago was just "doing his job" makes me question the nature of modern military.
I know this is just a movie; but in many of them, filmmakers seem to show soldiers as single-minded, aggressive, "no matter what it takes" kind of people. I can only hope that solders aren't really like that out there
@XxowendanxX Be that as it may, no one should ever attempt to plot against or even kill a person just because they didn't meet their standards as a soldier, employee or whatever. I may or may not have missed the whole situation involving the Colonel but regardless, people like him who think taking someone's own life without cause simply as "doing their job" just makes me sick to my stomach
@sadlobster1 you should watch the entire movie...Dawson and Downey were not trying to kill Santiago...Santiago was a rat...he tried to f*** Dawson over the fence-line shooting...the Marines are supposed to work as a unit and Santiago went outside the chain of command and tried to screw Dawson over for his own self-interest...Dawson and Downey were following orders I don't think they should have been found guilty of conduct unbecoming...they should have been allowed to return to their unit.......
@XxowendanxX Sorry, I thought Santiago was an innocent person. It's been a long time since I watched this movie that I may have forgotten all that.
What I haven't forgotten was how much of a douche Jessup was. I understand what you're saying about Santiago but Jessup said that disposing of Dawson and Downey after the code red order went south was simply doing his job.
I may not understand the military that well; but that seemed like a complete disregard for the lives of those men
@sadlobster1 I don't see how Jessup was a douche...he did the right thing...problems like this need to be handled within the unit...he told Kendrick to do what he had to do in order to get Santiago to fly straight...how was he supposed to know that Santiago was gonna die??...none of this would have been a problem had this onerous directive not come down against enlisted men disciplining their own...
What a fucking great scene. Think about it: if you were on the jury and you heard this exchange, what would you think? It's all circumstantial, but it definitely plants seeds of doubt in their minds, and lets the guy on the stand (Jessup) that you're on to him. What a great piece of lawyering.
@Schragmeister Sarcasm, I think. The judge is basically saying "Yes, yes, we get it, move on already, you're wasting time by saying a redundant point."
@Schragmeister It was like windscar18 said, the judge was being slightly flippant because he (as the rest of the court as well as the audience watching the movie) assumed that everyone there already knew about Markinson's death and that Caffey was dragging out something that could have been taken care of with a simple, 'Col. Jessup, I'm assuming you're aware of Lt. Col. Markinson's untimely death?,'. It was obviously a ploy by Caffey to irritate Jessup in order to get the eventual confession.
Say what you will about Tom Cruise as a person, but he's a VERY talented actor. People just like to deny it nowadays because they're "weirded out" by him. And I grant you, he is weird, but DAMN is he talented.
And Jack Nicholson...well, do I even *need* to say how talented he is?
@TheShockMaster I have never really thought that TC was a talented actor, because, other than Born on the 4th of July and this, he never convinced me that he wasnt acting. But, he was good in this movie for sure.
Agreed. Back when he was at his weirdest (jumping on Oprah's couch, etc) I thought, "God, this guy is such a douche. WTF did we ever see in him? He's a just a Scientology nutjob." But then I happened across this movie a couple months later and realized that, while he may have gone off the deep end in his personal life, he still is a great actor. As long as I avoid thinking about Tom Cruise the Man and focus on Tom Cruise the Actor, I love him
I don't want to be a Tom Cruise fan...but then there is this movie and Jerry McGuire and Born on the 4th of July....I have to begrudingly admit...He Really Was Really Good in these movies....Damn

Col. Jessep: I would appreciate it if he would address me as Colonel or Sir. I believe I've earned it.
Judge Randolph: Defense counsel will address the witness as Colonel or Sir.
Col. Jessep: [to Judge] I don't know what the hell kind of unit you're running here.
Judge Randolph: And the witness will address this court as Judge or Your Honor. I'm quite certain I've earned it. Take your seat, Colonel.
