Its not unheard of for male birds to look flamboyant and different to their female counterparts. Look at peafowl. The peacocks have the large display feathers while the peahens are very dull looking.

In birds, the males typically are more attractive and distinctive in appearance than the females because it is the male's task to impress the females.
