  • Quel régal!

  • she performed this countless times and each time with a fresh interpretation! only a true artist can do that. Bravissima Natalie!!!!!!!!!!

  • qui chante la harpe ???

  • magnifique...

  • Ms. Dessay could sing this difficult aria in her sleep, but its never stale--she adds fresh vocal color and little girl acting skills (such a slip of a thing!) to this wacky production (Shirley Temple meets Francais). Production wasn't traditional but I LOVED it. Magnifique! By the way, she's as warm and fun in person as she is on stage....but differently, of course. The puppets were lovely distorted 30's fun.

  • Superbe !

  • This must have been a nightmare for Dessay - all that wind hitting the mics, and she was in poor voice.

  • Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow what a great production! I wish I had seen this. The enormous dancing dolls were creepy but amazing. Natalie Dessay was in excellent singing voice. Her get-up is clearly inspired by Shirley Temple (as is her dancing around). Most productions of Hoffman have Olympia be a doll, but Offenbach never called her that. She was an "automaton" which means a robot. She was a very life-like young lady, a spoof on the over-refined young ladies at a debutante ball of the French Second Empire.

  • I can't figure out how they did the twelve foot-high dancing dolls. But it's a great performance, and I love that she doesn't let the wind rattle her at all.

  • @flipsyboy She's unflappable. Helps to have a good sense of humor--and she has this.

  • splendidissimo!!!!

  • Love the humungous dolls.

  • Ah, Olympia.. my favourite Hoffmann's story :) Charming.

  • 5:55 - Did she take advantage on the wind to move like that? Fun... haha

  • My favorite version of Olympia! Natalie is so cute in this version!

  • the dwarf at the beginning of the video is an astonishing copy of italian minister Renato Brunetta!!!Also the size is the same!

And what about Dessay? ten thumbs up!

  • Her best role yet!! *laughs into my pillow*

  • Those giant dolls are creeping me out. LOVE Natalie Desay and she blows this song out of the water (or the eyeballs in front of the stage out of the water....) but this isn't my favorite rendition/direction of the song. Honestly felt like I was watching a...well...pedophile. But that's art! and I love the creative force behind it!! This just wasn't my taste in direction haha

  • @Jake2336 well, now that you mention it, he is trying to date a robot French version of our Shirley Temple....a bit creepy, yes, but Ms. Dessay distracts us from that in a zany way.

  • J'y étais !!! I was there !!

  • Natalie Dessay is amazing . Such talent is the pride of France. A great singer, dancer

and actress performing in such a wonderful way she was really funny and professional

    in this role of Olympia.

  • Eyeballs and 7ft dolls scare me. But great all the same

  • Thanks for share Cor !

Great production and amazing voices !

  • Thank you Dear Cor for sharing this excellent performance/video.

Very different and interesting, too, front to what i saw until now.

Also thanks to Foly90 for this one. In my favorites now.

  • Beautiful music.. I know it.

    Thank you again.

  • ☆☆☆☆☆☆ I ♥ it ☆☆☆☆☆☆

    Have a nice Weekend! Inexx

  • Thanks Cor - for recomendation and sharing this video!

  • what a great production!!!

  • WOW those huge dolls scare me. I will be sleeping with the lights on tonight!

  • is it possible to find full video of this production?

  • Impressionante a extensão vocal e a técnica dessa grande cantora.MARAVILHOSO!Ela é perfeita cenicamente e vocalmente.

  • Unrelated question but something that makes me curious: Was this an outdoor performance? I'm seeing a lot of wind.

  • @Jaydoggy531 Yes outdoor performance; big wind! in french: the "Mistral"

  • @Jaydoggy531 It was from the Ancient Theatre of Orange, outdoor indeed ;-)

  • Imcomentável!!! Realmente explendido!!!!

  • Je l'adore :)

  • Oh my God... those giant dolls are the stuff of nightmares. What an interesting production!

  • @franimalistic I really wanna know how those things are pulled off haha :)

  • I can´t believe the guy following Natalie is wearing sunglasses, so funny.

  • @IshyIMB017 The glasses are suppose to represent magic glasses that make the doll appear real/alive to Hoffman. He's the only one that doesn't know she's a doll.

  • @grave4850 COOL!, I would really love to see the hole opera.

  • wooow que hermosoo

  • this is by far my favorite version of the doll song. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • @rswasher her voice is so ugly, this singer is alot better.

Maria Aleida (Doll Song) Les Contes D' Hoffman.

  • @hobo1975 obviously that's your opinion. My opinion is that it is my favorite.

  • I loved!

  • OMG!

  • Insuperable!

  • Wow Natalie, superb as ever. I look forward to seeing you in La Fille du Regiment at Covent Garden in June. You are marvellous absolutely divine. End of.

  • excellent performance! i can't imagine a better olympia as natalie!

  • Terrific performance! Original, inventive and always musical and intelligent. It makes something out of an aria that is just sung - however well. Natalie is simply - Superb!!

  • Are you serious? I LOVE this! Is this on DVD anywhere?

  • she. is. brilliant...and quite frankly so is that production.

  • ahahaha, those random eyeballs at the bottom of the screen at 6:36!!! dessay's performances are always so different!!! love her so much!

  • 5*****, beautiful ! ! ! thanks !

  • quelle présence! quelle jeu! quelle voix!!!! quel bonheur!

Chapeu !!!

  • I love her so much.

    her voice is like buttaaaa

  • Wow que lindo, this is jus so adorable....!!!!!!

  • i love this production, it's so fairy-taleish!!! its just ridiculously cute!!!!!!!!!!! and she sounds GREAT!

  • Aria starts @ 3:30. FYI.

  • voix superbeeeee!!!!!.....

  • Extraordinary production blessed by the enchanting and incomparable Natalie. Her voice is at its zenith. What other diva runs, falls down and dances like a 10 year old, all the time singing sublimely. Brava Natalie

  • she's crazy...jajaja...

but yeah she's got a great voice.....

  • The Dolls are very Henry Darger-esque!!

  • Is there a way I can get this on CD or DVD?

  • No wonder she likes Santa Fe so much -lots of open air

I love it when the doll gets to do a little acting. And Natalie is a great actor.

Looks like Julie Taymor got some of her ideas from the giant dolls.

  • she's sometimes higher in pitch. I think she couldn't hear the music properly..

  • i agree...it's the only thing that keeps me from watching this video more than others since i like the speed and the costumes.

  • I love Natalie Dessay!!!!

  • I wonder who is the singer plays Hoffmann in this video?

  • Hoffmann: ténor Marcus Haddock

  • This staging is JUST GREAT!!! Dessay is a hell of an actress!!! Every single detail she adds to the performance, her movements, everything, seems to have a purpose... However, pianissimi like those were the cause of the extreme vocal strain, I think...

  • natalie desay on her best

  • Natalie Dessay kinda reminds me of my grandmother. lol :D

  • Wow I noticed that someone put my comment down. I'm not meaning that she looks old.... My grandmother looks very young. That was a compliment. Sigh

  • You must have an awesome grandmother.

  • so shirley Temple

  • Oh. My. God. Those giant dolls are so incredibly freaky. But Natalie is amazing.

  • This is the most entertaining version of this I've seen.

  • brill brill brill - perfect.

  • que genia, que graciosa, que tecnica! madre mia!!, CUANTO TALENTO!!! Y QUE PUESTA!!!

    ROXANA LATRONICO

  • Oh it was an open air opera? No wonder she kept getting upskirted

  • Maybe it was done in purpose, in order to attract more people to see opera :P

  • That works!

  • this is the only dive I know of to have the timing for a good joke

  • amazing! and those dolls are awesome

  • SO CUTE! she is fantastic.

  • ps...the floating eyeballs are the BEST!

  • What a fabulous staging and set! The best I've ever seen of this aria... She's an amazing singer and obviously having a blast!

  • LMFAOLMFAO this staging is hilarious LOLOL

  • I love this interpretation! All of the dolls are awesome (one doll more than others, though ;)

  • LOOOOOOL ok this makes officially Dessay my favourite soprano coloratura!! I LOOOOOVE HER!!!

  • she had to push her skirt down in the wind....

  • Brilliant! the big dolls are a bit freaky though x

  • :P I like the dolls in the back.

    Natalie is a splendid actress.

  • Her high f:s in the second part are amazing. Here is her voice in perfect shape and the agility is stunning.

  • Bravo!!! Dessay must be the best coloratura actress of our time!!

  • intéressant

  • ive seen this so many times and those huge dolls in the back scare me...otherwise i love natalie

  • I totally agree they're so freaky but Natalie is sublime.

  • it's a opera that i don't know very well... someone can explain me what is about? who's olympia?

  • lumikide, Olympia is a doll who Hoffmann thinks is real after receiving a pair of glasses from a rather unsavoury character, Coppelius. Great Story. It was originally written that the act with Giuletta was to be third and not 2nd with Olympia coming 1st and Antonia Second. Confusing I know. Neil

  • In French: 1°Olympia, 2°Giuletta, 3°Antonia

  • She is amazig! I love her voice!

  • Acrobatic! she's just amazing... she skips, jumps, falls, etc. while singing! The most amazing doll that I've ever seen! :D

  • Yay! Sing along! She's so cute! (The giant dolls are freaky, though.)

  • I think she is the most interesting talent in the opera world at the mom. She can sing, she can act, she moves well, and she has GREAT charisma on stage. I just LOVE watching her and hearing her. She is WONDERFUL. Also, these French productions are top notch. I just watched the Met production of FILLE DE REGIMENT...great stuff. This is fun too, and I would love to see the whole thing.

  • I wouldn't say that offenbach's hoffmann is a comic opera ... the poor man is living a drama throughout the whole opera.

  • opera-comique does not mean that the subject is funny while all the opera speaks about dramas.

In music, the Contes of Hoffmann are named opera-comique because there are spoken dialogues.

There are the operas, the operas- comiques, the baroque operas, the operettas...

  • thanks for the clarification!

  • Carmen is also Opera Comique Foly90. But to make things more confusing there is also the Giuriad recitatives which make Carmen musically complete.

  • Yes, Carmen is also opera comique: I know.

  • Other than Dessay who are the people in this cast?

  • With:

    Marcus Haddock:Hoffmann

    Angelika Kirchschlager:Nicklauss

    2°part,Beatrice Uria-Monzon:Giulietta

    3°part, Leontina Vaduva:Antonia

and José Van Dam; Jean-Paul Fouchecourt
