No matter how many times I hear this song, it always makes me feel something. I can never quite explain it, but may thanks to Tim for writing one of the most beautiful love songs ever written (in my opinion).
if i somehow had a tumor that was tim minchin and it was terminal id keep even if it killed me XD and on a more serious note that last line of the song where he says "little moll" making it sound like mold did anybody else think that this song could actually be a song about a daughter?
@atreyurockmysocks NO! Meningococcus is a bacterium. Meningococcal Meningitis can have many hypervirulent strains. There is a Meningococcal Virus strain causing havoc in many parts of China right now. Meningitis in general can be either Viral or Bacterial. If you're being pedantic, you can't get Malignant Melanoma in your heart either! Tim is the son of a surgeon. I'm sure he knows this.
@BestOfTimMinchin Nope meningococcal meningitis is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitis which initially causes a meningicoccal infection which can then spread to the meninges causes meningococcal meningitis. Viral meningitis is different, and is caused by a number of different viruses, but is actually separate from meningicoccal meningitis as a disease
@rgerigsijg You are 90% correct. Well Wikipedia'd. However Neisseria Meningitidis (note the correct spelling), is often erroneously referred to as Meningococcus. It is a bacterium that CAN cause meningitis, and is one of the many non-virulent strains I was referring to in my previous post. This is not a pissing contest to show how ignorant you are. May I also point out that I am a Doctor and Scientist.
I am a physics undergraduate, and so while I have no knowledge of viruses and bacterium I do have attention to detail :)
Whichever of you is correct it doesn't really matter in respect to the song.
"I picked you up LIKE a virus, LIKE meningococcal meningitis"
'Like' being the important word here.
Two separate lines in which you could conceive that, in the second, Tim has moved on from the virus metaphor and simply picked an ailment that fits phonetically to the song.
@BestOfTimMinchin Meningococcus is a bacterium, therefore meningococcal meningitis would need to be caused by a bacteria right? If it were caused by a virus I would think it would be viral meningitis. 'Coccus' forming part of the word tells you it is bacterial, so how could they name a virus as a meningococcal strain? Although I agree with 'seekerofcheese' that Tim was referring to 'virus' and 'meningococcal meningitis' as two separate things he could pick up. Great song :)
@BestOfTimMinchin Technically you can get melanoma of the heart; malignant tumours are ones that have gained the ability to metastasise (spread) to other tissues, but they are still named after the original tissue type that the cancer started in. For example you could get metastasic melanoma of the colon.
@atreyurockmysocks He used to sing "I picked you up like a virus, like meningo-fucking-coccal meningitis", I think he was just using it to sound lyrically awesome. Not to mention that its hard to rhyme 'bacteria'
To be fair, he didn't actually say that meningococcal meningitis is caused by a virus, the actual line is 'I picked you up like a virus // Like meningococcal meningitis'. They're two separate lines of the song, it doesn't mean that he's saying that it's caused by a virus. He's just giving two separate kinds of illness (that handily rhyme) that you can catch.
This song is very touching...but the last line....the last line is so haunting. Completely changes it...I had a confused moment or two, and then it hit me and I suddenly had an overwhelming sadness ripple through me.
I have to say that my love for Tim Minchin was not of the creepy-uppy-kind, but instantaneous and pretty much without a warning. More like a stroke. It left me crippled and unable to ever come across a youtube video of him without "wasting" hours of my life clicking through the related videos, most of which I already saw at least ten times already anyway. Of all the serious songs, this has to be my favourite. (Along with 'White Wine in the Sun'.)
The intro to this really makes it the best live version on YouTube... So beautiful. I love how the crowd slowly realize it's a very heart warming song.
No matter how contentious or controversial anything Tim ever says is, its always, for the most part, entirely true. Even more so this song. He is bloody genious!
@supawooky ahhh.. i can't find a nicer version.. i mean without people laughing.. because it's a rahter serious song i mean i see the comical side of it.. but.. when i saw him doing this live.. the whole royal albert hall fell silent in awe for this beauty...
Is it wrong to find this song ridiculously sweet and want to cry everytime I hear it?

@Imbrium666 It's not sad if you consider that it's not "mole" he is saying but "moll", an Aussie slang term for a woman.
