  • A fantastic production as usual. You always show every step in detail with great camera work. If I want to be inspired to do something with my lathe, I usually watch one of your videos. Thanks :)

  • @adisharr

Thank you so much for your kind words.

    I'm very happy.

As soon as possible I'll posting my new videos and I hope you appreciation too.

With my best regards from Brazil.

  • Is that a stepper motor driving the spindle? How many teeth on the drive pulley? Does the software synchronize the X-axis with the spindle, or do gears? I want to convert my Sherline lathe to do the same. You have a very nice workshop. Thank you again.

  • The relation of teeth is free. You just use a ratio of low to high of gear teeth, and then calculate the distance to the movements with to some tests. See again my video and you will understand better now.

    any questions write me again.

    Best regards

    Luiz Ally.

  • @tryally Yes, I see in a previous video the gear set that synchronizes the spindle with the X-axis, that's where the magic happens. I noticed that Sherline sells the gears for threading. So, one stepper motor drives the spindle and X-axis. There also appears to be another stepper motor for the Z-axis because the tool pulls away when the spindle reverses, and moves back into cutting position when the spindle reverses again. So the CNC drives two axes. Very nice.

  • @sittinduck1337

    You are totally correct.

Are two stepper motor, X (normal) and Z (more strong) I use any stepper motor com 5 to 7Ap for Z axis.

This is a simple way but very eficient for thread with Sherline lathe machines.

Here I use the original Sherline gears for threading too, and with my modification the results are fantastics.

Any questions please write to me okay.

    Best wishes fro Brazil.

    Luiz Ally

  • Well, my thread system is very simple, the stepper motor is only for move the handwheel. (7Ap stepper motor)

I dont use the software synchronize the X-axis with the spindle, I use only the EMC 2 for all moviments of handwheel.

  • @tryally I'm going to try this setup with a Sherline 1 amp stepper motor with 10 tooth drive pulley and high torque position on spindle pulley. I wish I had the 7 amps stepper motor and driver box.

  • great vid. thank you.

  • @sittinduck1337

Hi, your comment make me happy,

Soon I will post new videos,

Best wishes from Brazil and thank you too.

    Luiz Ally

  • Definitely a machine to use on free time. I can make threads manually faster in a decent manual lathe. Neat it so small though. Good for House

  • @flyinasscritter

Yes, You are totaly right, this machine is very small and perfect for only home use.

    Thanks for your comment.

    Luiz Ally

  • aint that a cute little lathe

  • @kev8338 Hi,

It is a very good machine!

    Thanks for comment.

    Luiz Ally

  • Outstanding Luiz, anxious to see your next videos! ;)

  • @johndevost John,

Soon I will post about as I make serial gears and very small pieces in serial too.

But before I will post the final serie of the sharpening.

    Thanks for your words.

  • The close-ups in your videos are spectacular! Your pictures are worth a thousand words....as the saying goes... Thanks for your fine work! Roy Lewis

  • @rlewis1946

    Thanks again Roy Lewis,

They are words like yours that bring me inspiration to continue my work

    Best wishes

    Luiz Ally

  • what do you make with all those sherline machines?

  • @GnosisMan50 Hi,

I make micro-gear and micro parts for automotive DVDs.

Soon I will post a video about it.

    Regards

    Luiz

  • Is this being controlled by CNC software, in order to cut the threads, etc? If so, which software are you using? I'm considering the purchase of the Sherline 4410 so that I can turn small pieces in my shop.

  • @ray5961

    Hi Ray,

I use the EMC software and mechanic modification to make threads.

The Sherline machines is simple and work very good.

    Regards

    Luiz

  • dear friend, or threading you are using a lathe that has minebea motor instead of sherline's original. can I learn motor number and how you drive it.I think electronics run stepper with high speed for normal lathe usage.I googled but I really want to know "a known and running" configuration. I could not find howto drive stepper for a high speed as lathe motor. hopefully my sherline will arrive in 20 days and need to make good threads with it.

    thanks and bravo...

  • So, how many lathes do you have? Three, four? You lucky guy....

  • @powaybob

    Hello, thanks for your comment.

Today I have four lathes and three mills, all Sherline.

I make micro pieces and micro gears for marketing in my country

Soon I will post new videos about it.

    Regards from Brazil.

    Luiz

  • @powaybob

    Hello,

Thanks for you message and question,

    I use a MINEBEA stepper motor with 7A per phase and 2.2 V and 1.8 DEG/STEP

The drive for 7A is made by me and work very well for threads only in my 4100 sherline lathe.

This motor is very old and found in an antique copy machine but is very strong.

    Sorry for my delay

    Regards Luiz

  • Oi Luiz!

    Tudo bom?

    Luiz

  • I've never cut bronze before. I've cut brass which is very similar. what is bronze like?

  • Hello,

Brass is a specific tipe of bronze.

You can cutt anyone of them in a similar way.

    Regards

    Luiz

  • What kind of bird do you have?

  • Hi, I have a calopsita and my neighbor a macaw, the two make a lot of noise.(laugh)

    Regards from Brazil.

    Luiz

  • We have an African Gray, a Cockatoo and a Quaker (which is from your area of the world).

  • Interesting!Bye!!! Jirka.

  • @Thejirka64

    Thanks for your comment.

    Regards from Brasil.

  • Very nice threading video Luiz !!

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your comment.

Regards from Bauru, São Paulo, Brasil.

    Luiz

  • Ok, what got me to put aside my sherline and I mean almost in teh garbage was when I was threading. The gears would always jump on me. How did you fix that problem. I'm talking 1/2-20 threads in aluminum.

  • Hi,

As soon as possible, I will post a video at YouTube showing some details about the way I use do make threads.

I had solved the problem of "jumping" gears, making some modifications on my lathe and on my mill.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Sincerely, Luiz..

  • Hi Luiz,

I watch your video more than I watch regular TV - there is so much to learn from your work!

I am retired and taken up this type of work as a hobby - I am fascinated by your microtools. Any chance you can point me to a source where I can buy a few or do you sell them?

    -warrier

  • THis vid shows 2 sherline lathes, one has risers?!

What motor do u use? Are threads cut oe both sides at the time or can u feed in at an angle? I dont see a stepper motor at the long. feed, how do u make that automated? Please let me see more pics of the automated threading hack uve made! Lovely channel!!!! ure very talented!!

  • Thank you for the kind comment

Soon I will make a new vid about threads with Sherline lathe

    Best regards from Brasil

    Luiz

  • may I ask why U need the Sherline threading kit, when uve got stepper motors? ( I have discoverd the st. motor at the long. feed in another vid)

  • @Axbent I now see u have a stepper motor on the spindle! I guess the ratio gearing is 1:1 to the feed screw?

  • @Axbent must be one on the dumbest things ive said...lol U use the change gears I presume?

  • Very nice. I will look at more of your videos! I hope to see more close-ups of your home ground cutters. Perhaps just a one second zoom shot of the cutter you are about to you?

  • Thank you very much.

    Your comment make me happy.

Soon I will make more videos about my method for sharpening

and my process for constructing small pieces and also small tools.

I like using the big close image and high quality for a better understanding.

In all my videos you wiil can see many big closes about differents situations

I hope thart you can take advantage od them.

    Comments about them are welcome.

    Best regards from Brasil.

    Luiz

  • Dude, you really made that steel cotter look like a good work piece.

  • Yes, this work was very good!

    Thanks

    Luiz

  • Did you modify this lathe, I thought the sherline lathe couldn't cut threads out of the box??

  • Yes, I modified the my Sherline lathe, this modification allows to work well.

Sherline supplies a kit for threads, but it is manual.

    I just automated that kit.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Regards

  • Another great video! Thanks! Those are very small cutting tools! Do you make them?

  • Hi

Thank you for the comment .

Yes, I make them, and shortly I will post new videos showing as I build them.

    Best regards

    Luiz Ally

  • Seus videos são de excelente qualidade e instrutivos. Parabens !

Qualquer coisa que desejar saber basta me escrever.

    Grande abraço

    Luiz Ally

  • super 100*

  • Thank you for the comment

I have been making new videos

    Therefore they will be here!

  • HI! :D

I enjoyed this video on gear cutting. I had wondered about the sherline gear cutting set up. I usually see gear cutting done on bigger lathes that run FAST!, sherline does a great job.

thanks for another great video Tryally!

  • Me that thank canbaja

In my next video I will show my small magnetic table.

I am sure that you will appreciate enough.
