You can use a pick if you want.

It wil be harder though.

I suggest using a pick and finger picking at the same time and then when the chords come in use just the pick in order to get a good action and punch to them.

@psychosis25 No, you don't have to finger pick, Belew uses a pick. I just prefer to finger pick when lots of string-skipping is involved.
