Have you ever read Christopher Morley's, "The Haunted Bookshop", or "Parnassus on Wheels"? I love the ideal of his bookshop or mobile bookshop in the case of "Parnassus".
I've only read, "The Name of the Rose", so far when it comes to Eco. I've been meaning to read, "Foucault's Pendulum", which I understand is also excellent, if not better received.
Crow,
How about the name, Ignatius J. Reilly, for a hero/protagonist? Personally, I think it's solid gold.
"Awkward" is a great word to describe JFC's prose. Natty Bumppo as a name for a protagonist is a great example of how aesthetics change as a result of historical context. What seems like a terrible name to us was much more acceptable in the 19th century. After all, this is a society that thought Hiram was a fine name.
Haven't read the Ecco book. Sounds interesting, especially the bits on fascisit era comics.
Love those old bookstores, but they do seem to be a thing of the past. There are a few here in town, but again are holding on by I don't know what. I am only sorry that I started reading at age 40....what a waste. I'm relying on your post for some introduction into the world of fiction. Thanks.

I love that movie. The song, by Clannad, is most excellent and it still gives me some goose bumps.
