In many cases when I travel I use Coca-Cola as a reference to the minimum wage, and more often than not a large bottle of Coke is close to one hour at minimum wage, there fore buyable and still have enough to buy food.

My first time to listen Melinda, not the first time I hear of the Gates efforts to reduce poverty. You have been very instructive on why many NGO's don't quite make the difference as hope for. I am glad you took Coke as an example rather than McDo's or even Danone, since coca-cola is the same product around the world, other than knowing how to get to the end buyer, the product is mostly the same world wide.
I personally feel, the foundation should focus more on a 20-25 year plan, rather than looking at immediate cases (ie: India, Somalia). The laws of nature will probably keep the ratio of prosperity : poverty the same no matter how advanced the technology becomes. Standard of living is relative to time. Let's focus on the human species as a whole, implement 'solutions' only after paradigm shifts in technology. Top down approach would be the ideal way to tackle future growth of societies.

A true capitalist would support less government so that rich people can still pay less in taxes. Nobody should have to pay more than 25% in income taxes. Bill Gates should pay attention to Ron Paul. As far as Bush goes, the recessions at the beginning and end of his two terms caused job loss, but there were 52 consecutive months of growth at one point, due to his tax policies. Honestly, how can you argue that taking more money FROM people causes wealth? That's absurd. Bush also cut taxes on the middle class, which even liberals admit works.
I don't believe that opposing the slaughter of the unborn makes me a "caveman"; actually it makes me a decent person.

But people should divert their attention to this: Coca Cola is a company that looks at profits and nothing else, isn't it amazing how they are selling in poverty stricken countries where people have no shelter, no water or clothes yet some people are still finding money to buy coke to drink despite it being 100% bad for health. In many cases when I travel I use Coca-Cola as a reference to the minimum wage, and more often than not a large bottle of Coke is close to one hour at minimum wage, there fore buyable and still have enough to buy food.
So Please keep up the good work of spreading the word on reducing poverty, the world will be a better place for it.

I personally feel, the foundation should focus more on a 20-25 year plan, rather than looking at immediate cases (ie: India, Somalia). The laws of nature will probably keep the ratio of prosperity : poverty the same no matter how advanced the technology becomes. Standard of living is relative to time. Let's focus on the human species as a whole, implement 'solutions' only after paradigm shifts in technology. Top down approach would be the ideal way to tackle future growth of societies.

Great work Melinda, but 'health' and 'Coca Cola' in the same breath seems to me to be anathema. Coke's domination and manipulation of people's lives while spreading a junk product is appalling.This is so typical of the idea that a big country like America, that could so easily have adopted better international policies, can then march into a country so often made poorer by their competitive and political practices, as the great benefactor, in a blaze of admiration.

I wonder how much heart, and how much pure, brutal marketing is here,especially from Gateses, who suck whole world, then give out some 1% from it? I make the same, only my 1% is few E, but I don't need big media event to share something with other, poorer human.

@Fooize You don't understand Fluoride is accumulative in the body, even the promoters state children under six should not have any fluoride period, i guess you have not heard the latest results where they said fluoride was at least 10 times less effective as they though. It came out in the Nuremberg trials water fluoridation to keep the inmates docile.
