Autologous stem cell transplantation is a procedure by which blood-forming stem cells are removed, and later injected back into the patient. All stem cells are taken from the patient themselves and cultured for later injection. The technique is referred to as a bone marrow harvest and is performed under a general anesthesia. The incidence of patients experiencing rejection is rare due to the donor and recipient being the same individual. This remains the only approved method of the SCT therapy. iv been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes since i was 2.. im 23 now and i have so many health problems because of it... i hope they find a cure before its too late for alot of ppl....

Even if they could create a new pancreas for IDDM patients. The autoimmunity will still damage and/ or destroy it. There needs to be a cure for autoimmunity for this to be a "real" cure for diabetes.

That is the other part of the equation. Encapsulation may yet do that.
The question is, where would we get the tissue to solve the supply shortage of transplantable tissue. That is what stem cell research would allow for. Once we can do this, we can get the transplantable tissue.
