Wardell Gray was one of the only if not the only sax player to ever appear on the same recording as Charlie Parker. On the piece I am thinking of (possibly Stupendous, not sure) his solo is smoother than Parker's.
not alot known about wardell .but he was a dam fine player.along with the wonderful hamp hawes.plenty of stories about wardells demise drugs and gangsters.i would like to know the real one.thanks.
Im a double bass jazz player and Wardell is my favourite tenor player...... i tryed to contact spiritentities who is related to wardell but i didnt have no answer... any Wardell fans, please contact me, i have a bunch of stuff and i would like to make a page for this great player... also. anyone knows where is his tomb? i have a small group of people and we would like to go there where in vacations on the USA and make a little homage, please respond.
I also am a big Wardell fan and have most everything he recorded, although I don't have a complete discography. There is a film about Wardell called "The Forgotten Tenor" which I have in videotape format. I have also thought about creating a Website about Wardell. I already have a Website on Fats Navarro which I created in 1997. It's the second site you get when you do a google search on "Fats Navarro". Perhaps we call pool our efforts on the project.
He's one of those guys like Fats Navarro, Lennie Tristano, and Warne Marsh that only musicians seem to know about. Regular people don't go out of their way to find out about obscure but great artists.
HEY, is there any way you could put that film about Wardell on youtube????? I could help if possible, I have a VHS player & means to do hi-q transfer to DVD & vid file for youtube upload....
I discovered Gray through my searching for all of Dexter Gordon's recordings, and found his duets with Gray, and found their styles to be very similar in some ways; like them BOTH but really would like to know more about Gray.
@flatbackbass - You can research thru wikipedia, and Gray died of a broken neck, around Las Vegas. Don't know where his tomb is located - possibly in his hometown. Of course he made excellent recordings w/Bird and others, and his style could be very-unique.
i like stan... but he couldnt shine wardells shoes

@Modes9 Yeah, Lennie Tristano wrote a new line on the chords of this song: "Lennie's Pennies". Go and listen!

@flatbackbass Wardell Gray was put in an unmarked grave in the Vegas dessert after beating Mobsters out of dope money...

Fine recording, although I like Stan Getz's version even better. Hampton Hawes is great behind Gray!

It is just what you say.
The supporting performance of Hampton Hawes made this session a more splendid thing.

That's easy for you to say.
