I was born in Salinas, Ca, which is right next door. I remember family trips to the aquarium, and school field trips <3 I now live on the east coast. I miss the beaches of Monterey</3

And jellyfish are my favorite animal <3

So just out of curiosity..what happens when that great white gets bigger? Seems to me that type of animal shouldn't be in captivity..disaster waiting to happen. There is a reason why they don't survive in captivity. It would be awesome to see it in person though.

Not only did they save 5 white sharks by successfully transporting them from Southern California where they would otherwise be fished as bycatch, but all juvenille sharks migrated south to the Sea of Cortez immediately after being released. Look at the aquarium's website and the TRCC and TOPP organization data funded by Stanford University. It's not propoganda at all. It's just good science.

@frogfeeder The sharks were released safely and are STILL being monitored by the aquarium as healthy individuals. These animals are found injured in the wild and rehabilitated through the aquarium - they are released before their natural drive for hunting kicks in. They are released for 1) safety of other exhibit animals 2) you can't keep a 20 ft 5,000 lb animal in cativity. Why do you think the sunfish are released so often? If you wish to track their great whites you can through their website.

Wow, this aquariums awesome...and a great white shark in a tank? A few aquariums have tried captivating great whites before but have had to let them go due to risk of it dying but this seems to be ok in this tank...it is a damn big tank to be fair though so I'm glad its healthy enough to live in captivity... Im coming to Cali nect year and I'm guna have to visit this place!

@azaaza0909 i believe like in 2008 or 2009 the great white didnt get along and possibly tried to eat the other fish. or another time where a shark was basically dead floating on its side, so they had to take it out & let it go....

To my knowledge, Monterey Bay doesn't currently have any Great Whites being held in their aquarium.

I heard about one great white in captivity that did really well. It ate everything the researchers fed it, particularly pink salmon, and it stayed really healthy. But it started to get real big, real fast. It was in a tank with other sharks and eventually it got so big, it wanted the whole tank for itself. So it started attacking the other sharks, then they had to release it. Can anyone tell me if they've heard of this shark too? And if so, is the one in Monterey Bay the same shark?

OMG i can so relate to u! I live around that area too and instead of going to the stienheart (if that is how to spell it) me n my fam went to monteray for a couple of years while the other aquarium in SF was being rebuilt. Also I was stung by a Man o war as well in hawaii! ouch!
