He was an exceptional painter, not recognized at his time. The actress left him for a rich suitor and he was left with nothing. He died eventually of drinking and disease, alone. For the best of my knowledge the legend says he filled a square with flowers to impress the actress, wether its true or not I dont know.

The song was written by a famous poet - Andrej Voznesensky and the music by Raimonds Pauls (Latvian, considered one of the best composers in the former soviet union).
