Thanks a million for the lyrics, Vicki. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard Ioana Sandu's wonderful version, now that I know its meaning, I'm in tears... Very moving lyrics and haunting melody. Alla Pugacheva's performance is absolutely sublime.
Original of this song came from Latvia. and its lyrics is competely diffrent from that of Russian's . Original Lyrics is " Mari give her dauther the life but, never give her a happiness. " which depict how latvia history and its people had suffered . Anyway, it's good song also : )

Horrible example of Soviet kitsch pop at its worst. I was forced to learn this while an exchange student in Minsk. (It's "a million scarlet roses" -- not "millions of scarlet roses"). No wonder the USSR lost the Cold War!
i absolutely adore this song, this is one of the only songs that make Alla, alla pygacheva the memorable legend she is today. her songs were honest, raw in their beauty and genuine emotion.
His Name was Pirosmani Niko, a self-taught artists, and one of Georgia's most important and respected ones. He fell in love with a French actress, and as the lyrics tell, he sold his house, all his paintings, and everything he owned to fill the square with red roses.
Unfortunately, his death was as tragic as his life. He couldn't recover from his debt, and the story tells that he died penniless and miserably alone underneath a building's stairs.

@cattini007 Yes this is based on true story. Niko Pirosmani, Georgia's one of the greatest artists, she sings about him. He felt in love with French actress and as she sings, he sold everything, his house, paintings, to buy roses for her. Unfortunately it wasn't enough for her and she left.
@cattini007 Yes... it is based on a true story. I could have never imagined that such a romantic man not only existed, but also, was willing to take such a great risk of selling everything he owned, even if meant he will struggle through poverty for the rest of his life, only to show the woman he loved, just how much he loves her. Such men don't exist today... what a shame.
This is really one of the best song to hear at a late night. Even if you cannot understand the lyric like me, its rhythm is more than enough to relax your soul. Thank you for the song, and also the English translation
This song is very very very BEAUTIFUL song, I listen to it almost everyday. Also this song have make me cry everyday too. Because my husband and I are in process of getting divorce and I do not know why he don't love me anymore.
The song is about love of Georgian painter - Niko Pirosmani. The story became famous when it was recounted in a poem by Andrei Voznesensky, and later into a hit song by Alla Pugacheva, Million of Red Roses.
@guitarheroexpertNOT .... Sometimes men don't think with their head! He will regret it deff.ly!!! ......Please don't cry! You will find someone who is million times better than him!!! ; )
@guitarheroexpertNOT ...... It is very beautiful .....i love this song too , has the divorce gone through ? i`m divorced !! never a happy time thats for sure ....can be very painful , my ex wife was russian , it kind of has quite an impact on me ... and the song is based on a true story .. A very sad one ... i Have done the crying game ............ but now , who knows !! take care
When I'm working till late I'm listening this song.
I'm dreaming.... I'm closing my eyes and I turn slowly the pages of my life book... remembering the love's picture frames with my Olga.
For the people doesn't know the story of this song, someone told me that this song is dedicated to a Georgian artist, that in his life fall in love for Alla Pugachova and sold really his house and bought million of red roses.
Anyway .... fantastic song, fantastic Artist. The best russian singer.
Konstantin Paustovskii described the story of that love : "The carts were full of flowers up till edges, with drops of water, seemed like the early-dew sprinkled them with billions of rainbow drops.
The carts stopped at Margarita's house. Carters talked awhile with each other in low voices, and then started to unload the carts and throw flowers on the ground in front of gates, covering stones in pavement and road. Yes, these were thousands of flowers that Niko got for his beloved woman."
@966pietro I don't usually correct people, so please forgive me in advance. This song is NOT about the singer, Alla Pugachova. The artist was Niko Pirosmani ( Pirosmanashvil) and he fell in love with a French actress (some sources say she was a dancer) but undoubtedly, the woman wasn't Alla Pugachova . You can read about this in more depth on the web, just search for "Niko Pirosmani".
@966pietro This is not about Alla - the story is about a Georgian painter Pirossmani, who lived many years before Alla. He fell n love with a french actress. He was an exceptional painter, not recognized at his time. The actress left him for a rich suitor and he was left with nothing. He died eventually of drinking and disease, alone. All that was left of him is ~300 paintings, and there is a museum in Tbilisi. Now his paintings cost millions.
@yehudithasin wow! how do you know this? Is it told by her or someone that it is Pirossmani she´s singing about? And is the story of the roses true, you never mentioned it.
@acabrink I grew in Russia - where everyone knows the song, and most people the story that inspired it. So I cant tell you an exact source, but you can google the song or "Niko Prosmani" . For the best of my knowledge the legend says he filled a square with flowers to impress the actress, wether its true or not I dont know.
The song was written by a famous poet - Andrej Voznesensky and the music by Raimonds Pauls (Latvian, considered one of the best composers in the former soviet union).
@yehudithasin yeah, this is Georgian history full with love. am agree with your statement ......... So latvians and russians stay away from this beautiful lyrics. Only Georgians can love like this...AM Proud to be Georgian....
The lyrics of this song when deep in my heart(in Russian),,,and now that I understand it more with the English subtitles,,,it's hard to explain the feeling.
So what do you like? Her voice or the melody? This song was written by a Latvian composer, Raimonds Pauls. He has hundreds of great songs. This is just one of them that this Russian singer has chosen to sing. I give a shit, get your facts straight. I give her credit for a nice voice and the performance, but the melody is Latvian, not Russian.

@gramikhail Понимаю что образованность может раздражать глупых людей, а ваше мнение по поводу моей "внешности" никто особо не спрашивал.

The lyrics of this song when deep in my heart(in Russian),,,and now that I understand it more with the English subtitles,,,it's hard to explain the feeling.
My respect for this singer.

The singer is Russian, but the song is Latvian--let's set the record straight here, shall we?

LOL. what a dipshit. Im not russian/not latvian. but like, Pugachova is KNOWN for this song. LOL. who gives a shit who wrote it? SHE SANG IT!
Its like saying Nikesha Briscoe & Rafael Akinyem wrote Britney's Womanizer... WHO GIVES TWO SHITS?!
slightlyinsan3 2 years ago
So what do you like? Her voice or the melody? This song was written by a Latvian composer, Raimonds Pauls. He has hundreds of great songs. This is just one of them that this Russian singer has chosen to sing. I give a shit, get your facts straight. I give her credit for a nice voice and the performance, but the melody is Latvian, not Russian.

so when we listen to Britney or Beyonce, we really dont care about them? Dawg.... American Idol, and so on... ITS A VOCAL thing.. NOT MELODICAL :D

I don' know whom you are talking about. I don't watch Idol shows.
