  • Curious what the temps are there when you did this and what camera gear you use under such harsh conditions ? Thanks for contributing this piece.

  • 4:39 u can see his soul and spirit energy on top right on snow and wind

  • Nope, that's me filming myself!

  • @jrndai

I read your article " What Really Happened to George Mallory & Andrew Irvine?" and have come to believe that you may very well be correct that the two split up at the second step after Irvine gave Mallory a shoulder stand in order to allow Mallory to make a summit dash.

Jake I can't tell you how much I admire you guys for what you are doing. And you are one hell of a writer and critical thinker.

    Best Wishes Jake

  • Is that Dave Hahn filming?

  • Okay first of all coopsbrewer is a fucking comedy genious that was the funiest thing i seen all day, and second off all, that thing you said you werent sure what it was at 3:30 if you look at it again in this video and if you have seen what george mallory's goggles looked like, that looked kind of simmilar...... :O

  • just shows you it dosnt matter where humans go we leave all our crap there.

  • guys and girls can anyone help me out, anyone know if mallory and irvine where the first ever to try to summit ? ty if anyone can help :)

  • @stue962 no one knows for sure, still an ongoing mystery. If Irvine is found he may still have the camera. Kodak says if handled properly they may be able to develop the film still.

  • @stue962 There is speculation as to whether they made it up or not before they died, however mallorys body would suggest they were on their way down through the position of equipment on him and that stored upon his person. There also was no photo in which he carried of his wife, which he had promised to leave at the top for her. Irvine had a camera with him, if its discovered one day, it may prove they made it to the top.

  • @PinballVVizard It pretty much costs you your life to get up there.

  • It's astonishing he can still give a CLEAR running commentary at that altitude. Respect.

  • I'm just a desert Rock climber but all I can say is Great Video man! Modern equipment, O2, Radios, Gortex it doesn't matter the risk and experience is there and the outcome is never sure. In the game that you guys play allow me to just tip my bandana. Good luck!

  • This is so cool! It's like going back in time! Gosh you need to know EVERYTHING about old mountaineering gear in order to puzzle pieces together to search for clues of where Irvine may have been last. Very exciting stuff! Recently I've become fascinated by Everest and might one day attempt to climb.. But as I have no exp. climbing yet I think I'll stick to something smaller, like Mt. Rainier, but maybe someday in the far future :) Hope you guys find Irvine!

  • i am too old to ever climb but I thank you for the opportunity to see your adventures. Thank you.,

  • I hope they find him one day.

  • I really hope they find him this season... not to find out wether they summited or not, just so they can at least try to give him a proper send off, and so his family can finally know what happened to him and where he is. He was only 22 years old, he must have been so so brave to do what he and Mallory did. I'm nearly 21, I know I probably can't climb Everest, because I have brittle bones disease, but I sure as hell would love to see the mountain in person, maybe one day try.

  • My name is John Irvine (please, the name is not pronounced to rhyme with "line", but as in Lyn). I have a son who has a remarkable likeness to a photograph of Andrew. I am of Scottish and Irish extraction -Irvinestown in County Fermanagh and Irvine in Ayrshire.

  • Really great! What are the pills exactly?

  • Keep looking and you're going to find him.

    Good luck.

  • It's kinda sad how much litter there is, right? I mean, they should make people show what they bring up with them at base camp and make sure they take it out. I hate to see so many dang oxygen bottles...what will it be like in 20 years, seeing how so many people climb it now.

  • what makes it so expensive? couple hundred thousand is crazy! plane cant be more then 10K for traveling and 5K for costs,

  • from 9:10 minutes onwards, near jake at the right where the snow ends and the rock begins, there is a rock that looks like a lying body camouflaged by time and weather

  • My God amazing footage that you just show us around overlooking the place like a tourguide with hardly any air to breath. I thank you so much for this incredible effort.

I really still dream that the camera that Andrew Irvine maybe had with him will be found someday, but ofcourse to find Andrew himself is more important. What will be done with him if he is found? Will he be buried at the foot of Everest? Maybe next to his friend George? Anyway Goodluck and be careful.

  • dude that was incredibly risky to film and talk in the death zone.

  • did they ever find Irvine's body?

  • @tonysmile1 : no but in 2011 there is a new mission planned to retrieve him because they found something by examinating photos. Look google for "irvine search".

So with some luck, Irvine's body will be found next year in 2011.

Too bad we can't have a high resolution picture of Everest now with new technology, instead of relying on old pictures.

  • I believe Mallory and Irvine did fall from the Ice Axe site, there was heavy snow on the mountain and they both fell like a skier falls on the snow, Mallory was able to come to a stop and Irvine went all the way off the mountain down to the Rongbuk Glacier, he is down there buried.

  • I was just wondering how do you get sponsers? cuz Its been my dads and my dream to climb everest. We've been training to do it but of course we dont have the money.

  • Fantastic videos jake. Iv always been fascinated with everest. I know I will never get a chance to climb it now but I would still love to visit even base camp some day. Good luck in any further Irving expeditions

  • Any new information on Andrew Irvine? It will be great for Everest history when (if) Mallory's climbing partner will be found. I don't think Mallory or Irvine get as much recognition as they deserve to in the general public. Apropos, great stuff and thanks for the video!

  • @Jacobin777 Wiki have a note about a australien climber looking for him may 2010. Could be interesting if he finds their camera.

  • @Zhqrxt -Thanks-I've been using explorersweb for information as well.

  • someone should spend some energy looking for Rusty

he indeed is in the same realm as Mallory Andrew was an awesome Mountaineer.

you know what you do as a climber influences younger climbers

    thanks for posting

     buzz

  • God it must be so cool to get a chance to climb that mountain.Does it really cost over a hundred grand to go?cause if it does i will never get to go

  • yep it coasts somewhere around that...

i mean what did you expected?!?!

20,000lbs of equipment + 400-500 carriers + sherpas + passes = lots and lots of money....

the funniest thing is that in the end, you end up carring only the most basic climbing equipment....

  • couldn't you have gone down the mountain a bit instead of forcing yourself to speak?!?!

  • wow , everest is becoming one big junk pile. Kind of sad. The very early stuff is fascinating though.

  • 55-65k

  • They have cut out part of the original clip at the end. His breathing gets faster and he starts to run all over the rocks, screaming that he saw one of the Chinese climbers, still alive- but with "hair all over"- up there. It's clear they suspect he became exhausted from all of the talking and climbing and did take some of those ancient pills in a desperate attempt to get back down to thicker air and safety, but didn't want to alarm the sponsors...

  • haha puts the pills in his pocket for a little treat perhaps later on thats gold

  • Are you related to Edward Norton from the 1924 expedition?

  • Any plans for another search for andrew irvine in the works? thanks

  • When you are up there do you see lots of bodies?... Did anyone ever move Rob Hall or Scott Fischer?... In "Into thin air" it says they were in a pretty well travelled position. Sorry for the morbid question but its been on my mind since reading the book

  • yes indeed you do but i dont think you see the two ill fated guides bodies...most bodies are located above camp 4 and i beleive near the kumbu icefall...

  • Thanks...it is a fun place, in many ways, but definitely stressful at times, too! Costs a lot - we always use sponsors to help with cost. But, at minimum for a solid expedition, probably a couple hundred thousand dollars!

Thanks again, and maybe see you there someday!

  • First of all.. Congratulations on all you have achieved here, very inspirational. My question is, you say it costs a few hundred thousand. Is this for a solo expedition so to speak? As apposed to one organized through one of the more mainstream company's such as explore Himalaya who appear to run trips from $40,000 mark. Granted other charges may be inn cured but surely not hundreds of thousands? Not to doubt what you say but a bit more detail would be interesting to read. Thanks a lot :)

  • @jrndai when irvine and the other guy climbed the everest, didn't cost them that much! that's stupid! 200 thousand dollars? i mean seirously? permits and basic emergency supply...guy done it before without any of these sponsors

  • @nexypointy The other guy was Mallory and they both perished, the less money you spend the more risks you take. If you just wanna be one of the 300 corpses on the mountain sure it doesn't cost that much.

  • That carabiner looked puny!

  • what a garbage of non biodegradable waste on the Everest

  • Very fascinating stuff.

  • Is this the guy that was on vertical limit?

  • No I think you are ref to Ed Viesturs...but Jake Norton is a very accomplished climber in his own right too :)

  • Has the search now been abandoned? It amazes me that such dedication has been displayed to the cause, human beings are unbelievable creatures! No place to be hanging around, my respect to you JN, and all those who took part in the epic search.

Onwards and upwards, then down again...

  • Excellent

Have you got any more videos?

  • Is he on everest by himself?

  • There's no way he's up there by himself. He even said "We" at one point.

  • mate who do you think is filming him?

  • Actually, I was alone at this point. Dave Hahn and I had gone up to search, and I went alone to this point on the First Step. We were a small team - just Dave, me, and Danuru and Tashi Sherpa. I filmed myself in this particular video.

  • absolutely fantastic quest..........i'm in awe.

  • i heard from this guy before

    he really is an expert

he helped find george mallory in '98

  • take 5 dude you need some O's

  • Amazing, I hope to one day climb everest.

    Thanks for the amazing vid

  • Glad you liked the video...And, good luck with your Everest aspirations! Climb high!

  • @jrndai Did you summit Everest, good sir? Sure sounds like you made it, judging like you are in the death zone with no O2... Much respect to all mountaineers. After reading " Into thin Air" and watching "Touching the Void, I think I'll stick to cycling! Thanks for the great video. :)

  • Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing.

  • nice vid, i like watching jake nortons work cause my name is the same

  • great vid.thanx for posting this
