I'm so glad RUSH exists. For these guys to make songs like this in THAT period when "pop" music was so over the top, really makes me feel good. AWESOME VID!!!
Wow! I can't believe they did this live! I've been listening to this album a lot lately and thought I'd check to see if there was video for this song. I did not expect to see a live performance. Simply amazing, these guys!
I have stood on many mountain tops and shouted at the sky... It's such a gratifying feeling... I have loved this song long before I started hiking mountain tops though... Lord knows I have my scars of pleasure and pain...
PART I - I was married just four days before this on 06.23.1990! Been a Rush fan for at least a decade before that when I was learning to drive (wish it were a Red Barchetta)! Currently teaching my daughter to drive (her turn to drive). This summer she'll be able to drive us into Philly for the Time Machine Tour. It will make a great 20th wedding anniversary celebration as well as 30th anniversary of being a fan.
PART II - It will overall be a celebration of having the luxury of experiencing the greatest band for my entire maturity and the fact they have survived this long through the good and the numbing hardships, have remained friends, and continue to crank out lyrically and musically powerful songs while all the while still having fun at it.
All for bring this song back to the new tour. Along with songs like Superconductor, Cut to the Chase, Double Agent, Territories. And how sick would it be if they were like "hey lets bring Lake Side Park out and play that"
@TheJCArena was at the Presto Tour when they stopped at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin in 1990, they did almost all the songs from the album, plus they brought back Xanadu from the archives, along with several others, such as Red Barchetta
This was written as a sequenced bassline from the beginning. Its main purpose was to explore dance rhythms and Geddy's interest in synthesized soundscapes. I remember reading the interview back in the 80s because I was getting deeper into synths as a result of playing Rush songs.
From that, I evenually found myself 3 years on writng acid and house tracks. Rush just doesn't influence rock musicians.
I'm guessing because this song is a bassist's worst nightmare. I'm a bassist/vocalist myself in a trio band, and we covered this song. It's the same two riffs over and over again, but it's at the very top of the neck. I've got very big hands (I'm 6'3"), but my left hand was burning by the time I finished the song. It's very, very hard on the fingers on the fingerboard- I had to stop for a little bit. It's the opposite of most Rush songs- mentally easy, but very physically difficult.
Back in the 80's when I first discovered Rush I loved all the drum and percussion sounds That I heard on all the albums. It wasn't until I saw my first concert as a drummer and a fan that I realized Neil plays it all, precisely, every time. Nothing pre-programmed, nothing triggered for him. Absolutely amazing.
Eek. No. If you ever get the chance, download a bootleg called 'Scanning for Dragons - Remaster'. It was recorded from Alex's monitor mix, meaning that his vocals are very loud in the mix. He cannot sing very good.
It's Rush, it's perfect. I may do a cover of this song with my band- I get the pleasure of the bass and vocals. Of course, I don't sound anything like Geddy, so I'm really hoping I don't TOTALLY blow it. But of course, it'll never live up to the power of Rush.
BTW, some of the most incredibe lyrics I've ever heard. This live version accentuates the African feel in a way the studio just doesn't. They're both good, just very different.
This is my favorite song off of Presto...once I found that this is where Neil got that signature drumbeat for his solos, I immediately put this song on my playlist.
who ever is putting these videos up from the Presto tour, this stuff is awesome!
and of course, RUSH are always insanely good. I'm glad to get the chance to see and hear them play a lot of this stuff, lately (the last 3 or 4 tours) albums such as 'Presto' and 'Power Windows' don't seem to get any stage time at all.
Does anyone remember that for a few shows on this tour, they used a skrim that came down in front of the stage? The lights played off it? It should have been a cool effect, but the skrims caught the air and were all over the audience... Anyone e,se remember this? Also anyone remember on the last show of this tour, Billy Sheehan came out on stage to play with them and got his hair caught in his drill while playing guitar?? Anyone??
In San Diego they had that, and the front of stage lights were shining on it vertically. You could barely see them through it. I was pissed because I couldn't see what Neil was doing! (HA)
I was living in Greenville, SC, when they started their Presto tour there in February 1990. I distinctly remember the lights being out of sync a few times. Great first show!
They are available for download on many sites including DIMEADOZEN, or THE TRADER'S DEN. You can also obtain them via free trade. These are to be traded freely and NEVER TO BE SOLD! :-)
If it's a DVD, a simple DVD player application will do. You can even use Windows Media Player, or download a freeware program called VLC Media Player. :-)
If it's audio, it's most likely in SHN, FLAC, or APE format. You'll need a media player that can play those types of files, or just download a free program called "Trader's Little Helper" to decode the files to WAV. :-)
I always thought that Scars, like, say, Losing It, or Tai Shan, was one of those cool recorded songs that would never see stage time in front of a live audience, so this is a big surprise. Aside from the sheer impressiveness of pulling it off, and the beauty of the song, this is a very rare chance to hear Rush play a song radically different live than on the recorded album. They sound almost nothing alike, and I like them each for different reasons.
It is a complicated beat. The groove on his electronic drums in this song is what he has been using in the electronic part of his solo for a while now.
Man..this is the video post of the century than you so much...i've seen this band every concert since 85 about 19 or so times in all (lost count hehe) and man does this bring back cool memories of the shoreline on the presto tour...thanks vic
You're very welcome! Just trying to do my part for fellow Rush fans like myself. And of course to keep Rush vids alive on YouTube after thorny was banned. :-( We'll miss you, Vin...
Anyways, thanks again! Hey, and see you back on TRF! :-)
any chance you could tell me what the name of this bootleg is? i mean the whole show

I can't dig all that sampling either, I'm glad they ditched it.

Agree with the others but I could never get in to "The Big Wheel." The "well I was only a kid" lyric gets annoying and the song just seemed to poppy.
