I think the EV-1 failed because it was a two seater but unlike the Tesla it wasn't quick or a sports car. Very few people will put up with no back seats if its NOT a sports car. Honda's 1999 Insight hybrid got 60mpg and arrived in the US before the famous Prius. Like the EV1 it was slow, ugly, a two seater and not a big seller, while the 4 door, less weird looking Prius was a hit.
The EV1 was also a failure because GM created an impractical 2 seater with no back seats that, unlike the Tesla or Smart Car, wasn't pretty or sporty. Honda tried something similar and also failed. Remember the 1999 Honda Insight? Got 60 mpg and was available before the Prius and nobody bought them. Why? Like the EV1 it was impractical as a two seater with minimal storage, not fast, and weird looking.
you stay in that car like in a small box... 0-60 in only 4 seconds is great but nothing nore...92000 $ it's realy expensive.a sport car has a great engine sound but this sounds like a pc:)) ha ha ha

Too bad the reporter was so tall -- his knees were touching his chin when he got in the car. With all those lithium-ion batteries, the Tesla must get REALLY hot. How do they keep itthe batteries from melting each other?
that actually is the most challenging part of building an electric powered vehicle. The battery pack has a dedicated cooling- and also heating- system since the cells would get killed when charged at low temperatures either.
Nicely said, I would even say that $100k is a bargain for this car considering you probably won't have to re charge for many weeks, and when you do it costs far less than filling up at the pump. Not to mention no emissions or sound pollution. This car proves that electric motors are the future.
Also, PC magazine probably isn't familiar with how expensive most cars that can go 0-60 in under 4 seconds are. Other than the faster corvettes most cars that can do that will be nearly as expensive as the Tesla if not more.
GOOD ONE! NEVER THOUGHT OALSO! IF YOU add a wireless energy pack to the ev it would have infinite milage! i remade nikola teslas wireless energy system, just check it out! wireless energy would allow all electric vehicles to run forever till the ac motor burns out which is 100s of years!!!!F THAT!
@moh2o Well, I love the idea of an all electric car. BUT, until it can go more than 100 miles without having to be recharged, & that recharge doesn't take a half a day, & there are places to charge it up, like gas stations, that are as numerous as gas stations (otherwise, you gonna pull into a total strangers driveway & ask to plug in for 10.5 hours?), & until a drivable version of a production car is much more affordable than now, I'm afraid the electric car is simply an expensive novelty.
@drtyfknmouth I just got back from a tesla dealership in Manhattan and I think most of your criteria is met now. With their new charging system, it takes 3.5 hours to charge and has a range of 245 miles. As far as a Buying a Ferarri that matches that takeoff speed, one would have to purchase the Ferarri f50 for $660,000. Although they have increased the range time and decreased the charge time, I think this car will need somewhere around 200 miles for every hour charged to be successful.

To me, $120K is a lot of money. I think it is too for many people. It's not that the Roadster isn't worth it. Tesla is a start-up company that doesn't have the resources to mass produce cars for less money like GM or Toyota. But you are right. An electric car that goes 0-60 in 4.5 seconds (faster than an M3), goes 240 miles without using a drop of gasoline, and only costs $7.00 to charge-up is really damn worth it.
Funny how the Bushy administration gave out subsidies for buying Hummers when they went into production. Do you think we will see tax breaks for buying the Tesla???? Some how I doubt it!
every tesla rep keeps advertising the car is around 100k and when i read up on it its 120k?! wth i mean i'm not a baller like that but i'm looking into them and 100k "might" be do-able but 120k+options+tax. ur talking 150k maybe ::deal breaker:: i'm all for this car but they started at under 100k and claimed prices were gonna go down eventually but they just keep going up! and yes i know about the gearbox. they gotta start eating costs man. google saturn sky amp for a cheaper alternative
For a car that can outperform a corvette and other high end cars and requires no gas and cost about 5 cents per mile I say it is a good deal for those in that high end car market.
Now when battery technology catches up with the motor you will have something.
The only question where do we get the extra electricity if most cars eventually switch over to electric.
Coal? Nuclear?
Solar is still to expensive. Yes I know wind but there is a limit to how many you can put up and where.
Solar is to expensive right now ( maybe not for some one that can afford a six figure car ) but the cost IS going down and with solar rental options available more and more people can afford it
Awesome idea,I think more manufacturers should get behind projects like this. But I hate the phrase "inspired by PC technology". Does that mean it doesnt work worth a shit?
The only knock I have on the Tesla is that rich people don't give a crap how expensive gas is, and for them, the Tesla will be a show-off novelty more than it will be a way to help the environment or help the country become energy independent.
The average middle class or poor American can not afford the Tesla. I hope the cost will come down quickly on other electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles now in development.
Just check how HARD it is for people to get in & out of this Tesla Roadster, I've worked in the car biz (Datsun/Nissan,Infiniti,& Honda) for over 30 years and they definitely BuMpeD their HeAd on the basics of any comfort for either the driver or passenger, God forbid they put a bigger steering wheel on this car you'd be locked in, not to mention the fact that you'd need a can opener to get out, in case of a hard side impact!
It has the about the same performance and price of a porsche, yet you guys aren't complaining about them. Also, I'm not going to deny that it isn't perfect, but was the automobile perfect the first few trys? No. So just give them some breathing room and they'll probably come out with an awsome EV (not that the roadster isn't awsome).
now if you combine this cars electric setup with a tesla electric tower(wardenclyffe), you will not have to charge it or pay anything. the tower releases harmless plasma waves which send large energy transfers without any health problems, to get the energy you put the antenna on the car and bam, more than enough energy to run that electric motor!!!!im serious, i put some videos of his patents, its an awesome system.
$92,000!?...how stupid are these people? by the time these technology becomes affordable, everything will be underwater , and our air would be unbreathable.
Screw these guys! Id rather take $92,000 dollars worth of gasoline which would last me more than a lifetime!
haha, al gores recycling of waterworld.. He contributes to a moronic trend that some how we can affect the temperature of the earth. To me it's more like a litmus test of stupidity in ones nation.
You're stupid. Technology has to start somewhere. Cellphones used to be expensive, now they're affordable. Soon these type of cars will be affordable as well.
I heard that Tesla is comming out with a eletric sedan next year (2009) that will be around $50,000 dollars ,although this roadster looks nice there is hardly Any Room to get In & Out of this car (I'm 6'0 tall) and when I went to the Tesla showroom in Beverly Hills,Ca this was a Major Disappointment that will keep me from even considering the tesla roadster.
These things should be delivered by mid- or late-April (produced March 17th, delivered about four weeks later). Man, I want to see someone driving one.
"These things should be delivered by mid- or late-April (produced March 17th, delivered about four weeks later). Man, I want to see someone driving one."
One of our large power companies with several offshore wind power plants is also betting on electric cars now - we already get 25 % of our electric power from the wind on average now, but they produce all around the clock, even when consumption is very low.
funny they say zero emissions, and then they show the fuckin smoke stacks from the coal burning power plant that is recharging the battery. dumb assholes. coal burning is killing our planet.
It can be burnt far more effeciently at MODERN power plants - also if using new technologies to trap the bad stuff. Or even better ways of "burning" the coal (in a converted form !) via fuel cells. Power plants could be made even more efficient, if they produced CHEAP power at night for elec. cars and sim. purposes.
And using the surplus hear for district heating as we do here, means you can reach very high efficieny rates.
Whats the point if your gonna sell it for that much? So you've got this really great innovative idea that could end the fuel crisis in this country but you can only sell 350 of them. Kind of a Teaser I think.
OK, so ICE cars are a lot cheaper at PRESENT -and this is a SPORTS CAR ( a bit of show off to get attention, I suppose ). They could mass produce family saloon cars for far less than this price - and rem. this has just started for real - much potential for improvement and developments. If the normal car companies are not careful and up on the beat they are going to miss out and become extinct within a decade or two.
I would rather it drive like a mercedes sl500 (one of the smoothest convertibles I've ever been in), I've driven the maserati quattroporte, and the gear box is very temperamental. As a purebred race car It only likes shifting gears above 7,000 rpm. It's not a street car to be shifted around 2,500, as if you do the whole car will start jerking. I know how to drive a stick too, so it's not my fault
Now, if you really want the world to enjoy freedom from car polution and attain full saturation of the market, refrain from becoming unionized (like Walmart) and offer the $92,000 car for only $920 (taking two zeros off the price tag). That will put the traditional automobile out of business.
the car is by far my greatest eco friendly one...but shouldnt they put the brakes that recharge the battery once you wanna stop?it would be more reasonable and more efficient?
Super capacitors are not new. They were developed at the Standard Oil Company (BP) research center in the early 1980's I worked on the project. We called them "Max Caps" and their orignial purpose was load equalization of powwr plants. The "Caps" use a polymer film and have unlimited charge/discharge cycle.
Ha, no, I have to admit that I still use Windows - but I have played a little bit with Linux and plan to get back into it more seriously in the future ( was back when things were still a bit messy and support was hard to come buy, when you ran into trouble ).
Yes, I was just a bit confused there - got some info mixed up *LOL* D'ohhh
Yes, it looks really cool and wild.
Think they are coming, but have heard
about $30,000 for a family saloon car.
But then again that's not going to have this wild look. These are early days though, so I expect to see a lot things going on this field in the coming years - other companies, far lower prices when mass production takes over, improvements in efficiency and range etc.
I've read that our hydro-electric power resources are pretty much at full capacity right now. They are working on putting generators out in the ocean however.
MODERN nuclear power, biofuel based on SECOND gen. techn. using all sorts of organic WASTE products , hydrogen used for storing energy during periods of low power consumption.
Lots of alternative possibilities - lets get independant of those unpredictable and unreliable Arabs as soon as possible !
"Any money you may save powering the car via battery is off-set by it's $92,000 price-tag."
Well since it gives $92,000 sports-car performance, it's perspectively a bargain with it's 135mpg equivilent efficiency. Granted any car that costs $92,000 better go faster than 130mph.
However, when looking at the full-cycle energy-equivalency of gasoline with electricity from the USA grid, that figure increases to 49 mpg (U.S.) (4.77 l/100 km).
So if the electrical energy is mainly produced burning fossil fuel (and thats the case in the US), then the car is not as green as one might think. But to be fair, 49mpg is still a quite impressive figure for a sportscar like the Tesla Roadster and the Tesla engineers deserve our respect...
Tesla states that the car has an efficiency of 135mpg (US). Thats 1.74lt/100km or 162 UK mpg. Pretty good I thought! This however relates only to the station-to-wheel efficiency.
The trouble is wind energy in the UK MAKES 0.5% of the nation's electricity. That in a country that has 40% of the EU's windiest locations! Solar is a big problem for less sunny states and world demand for silicon (micro chips and solar cells) means it is far more costly than coal. Nuclear takes 10+ years to build.
Mitsubishi are realeasing their small EV in the UK this year. But the cost per mile based on electricity alone is over 20 cents. And the coal fired emissions of CO2?
by centralizing the CO2 emissions at a power plant... more can be done about it... the reason is that when you have emissions centralized you can cost justify more advanced scrubber technology...
I like the concept. However, lets be realistic about the future. Even if the price of an EV came down to $20k in 2018 how are you going to supply the energy such cars need? CA may be able to do it with Solar as long as the price of Silicon comes down. But NY, Chicago, EU, Japan? Dirty coal or problematic Nuclear?
actually, with the combination of solar and wind power, you could achieve 20%+ of the US electric demands... and solar and wind are both becoming more viable over time as the technology improves as the markets for those products increases and more engineers join the workforce with bright new ideas...
Even though it needs electricity, which comes from possibly polluting power plants, in total it's still more enviromental friendly than ordinary cars.
And when thinking of a scenario in which these electric cars would become more widespread many of you are forgetting the fact, that even if power plants start to pollute more because of the increased demands for more electricity, all oil refineries and oil tankers etc. correspondingly pollute much less due to decreased demands for fuel.
Whoever says that it isn't decreasing emissions is wrog because even if it is getting the electricity made from a power plant it isn't always a coal power plant there are others such as wind and HEP's that produce clean energy.
Also the car itself isn't making any emmision unlike conventional energy sources cars use which make more polution adding it to what is already being made with the power plants so this means that the electric car does lower emissions.
I agree. If you want to talk thermodynamics, we can also argue that the measure of the irreversibility of a process is a measure of it's efficiency. When you stomp on the brakes of a regular car, you waste energy as heat and generate entropy. When you stomp on the regenerative brakes of the roadster, you just recharge the battery, converting the mechanical energy back into electrical to be reused.
I think it's about time someone comes out with an electric car that doesn't suck.
I agree. And I think the Tesla Roadster is a HUGE step towards this. It's just an electric car that doesn't suck. It's so simple I don't know why every other electric car before this had to look like a jellybean on wheels.
And their Sedan model is projected to have an even greater range. This is going to be nice.
SUVs hatchbacks and don't forget the lightning GTS from the uk. all the cars have the 100% torque effciency plus alatiar and a123 batteries charge in under 15mins with lifecycles beyond 250,000 miles.
Can't wait prices range from $30,000 to $200,000 for the uber GTS.
Sell it in Norway. The prohibitive emissions taxes there for roadsters (which this car will be exempt from) will MORE than even the field between an electric powered car and an ICE powered car.
Everyone who calls electric cars 100% clean mistakes a little. did the energy for this car was obtained clean also? doesnt matter where to burn oil - on electroplant and then charhe ur car or directly in a motor =)

that actually is the most challenging part of building an electric powered vehicle. The battery pack has a dedicated cooling- and also heating- system since the cells would get killed when charged at low temperatures either.
jogeneer 3 years ago
I am a blue collar working class person who makes less than 40k a year. I do not understand why people think that $100,000 it to much for an:
-All electric, Lithium Ion Battery car
-Does 0 to 60 faster than a Ferrari,(which costs $125,000)
-Hand made, custom built on a Lotus all Aluminum racing chassis
-Looks frikkin' hotter than heck.
I mean , come on how in the hell are you going to get a Wal-frikkin'-Mart version of this that even compares?
Duh, try making one of these in your Garage!
moh2o 3 years ago 23
Nicely said, I would even say that $100k is a bargain for this car considering you probably won't have to re charge for many weeks, and when you do it costs far less than filling up at the pump. Not to mention no emissions or sound pollution. This car proves that electric motors are the future.
GSGFlash 3 years ago 7
Yeah, look the MSRP for a new 2006 Hummer H1 is, $125,000 to $136,000 .
How much is the latest Porsche Carrera S goes for $96,000 new.
So why is the journalist constantly gagging out the "super high cost" of the Tesla?
They are just constantly trying to down the electric car, because they are not believers, period.
moh2o 3 years ago 15
Also, PC magazine probably isn't familiar with how expensive most cars that can go 0-60 in under 4 seconds are. Other than the faster corvettes most cars that can do that will be nearly as expensive as the Tesla if not more.

GOOD ONE! NEVER THOUGHT OALSO! IF YOU add a wireless energy pack to the ev it would have infinite milage! i remade nikola teslas wireless energy system, just check it out! wireless energy would allow all electric vehicles to run forever till the ac motor burns out which is 100s of years!!!!F THAT!
boxa888 2 years ago
@moh2o Well, I love the idea of an all electric car. BUT, until it can go more than 100 miles without having to be recharged, & that recharge doesn't take a half a day, & there are places to charge it up, like gas stations, that are as numerous as gas stations (otherwise, you gonna pull into a total strangers driveway & ask to plug in for 10.5 hours?), & until a drivable version of a production car is much more affordable than now, I'm afraid the electric car is simply an expensive novelty.
drtyfknmouth 1 year ago

The only knock I have on the Tesla is that rich people don't give a crap how expensive gas is, and for them, the Tesla will be a show-off novelty more than it will be a way to help the environment or help the country become energy independent.
The average middle class or poor American can not afford the Tesla. I hope the cost will come down quickly on other electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles now in development.

now if you combine this cars electric setup with a tesla electric tower(wardenclyffe), you will not have to charge it or pay anything. the tower releases harmless plasma waves which send large energy transfers without any health problems, to get the energy you put the antenna on the car and bam, more than enough energy to run that electric motor!!!!im serious, i put some videos of his patents, its an awesome system.

funny they say zero emissions, and then they show the fuckin smoke stacks from the coal burning power plant that is recharging the battery. dumb assholes. coal burning is killing our planet.
kennethdante 3 years ago
It can be burnt far more effeciently at MODERN power plants - also if using new technologies to trap the bad stuff. Or even better ways of "burning" the coal (in a converted form !) via fuel cells. Power plants could be made even more efficient, if they produced CHEAP power at night for elec. cars and sim. purposes.
And using the surplus hear for district heating as we do here, means you can reach very high efficieny rates.
ICE cars also pollute a lot btw.
ElvenDane 3 years ago
Whats the point if your gonna sell it for that much? So you've got this really great innovative idea that could end the fuel crisis in this country but you can only sell 350 of them. Kind of a Teaser I think.
kbiz32000 3 years ago
Have you looked at the gas prices lately ?
Try doing the math.

I know how to drive a stick too, so it's not my fault

I bet that is coming soon - it has been done

ElvenDane 3 years ago
Super capacitors are not new. They were developed at the Standard Oil Company (BP) research center in the early 1980's I worked on the project. We called them "Max Caps" and their orignial purpose was load equalization of powwr plants. The "Caps" use a polymer film and have unlimited charge/discharge cycle.

"Any money you may save powering the car via battery is off-set by it's $92,000 price-tag."
Well since it gives $92,000 sports-car performance, it's perspectively a bargain with it's 135mpg equivilent efficiency. Granted any car that costs $92,000 better go faster than 130mph.
mpalm887 4 years ago 2
However, when looking at the full-cycle energy-equivalency of gasoline with electricity from the USA grid, that figure increases to 49 mpg (U.S.) (4.77 l/100 km).
So if the electrical energy is mainly produced burning fossil fuel (and thats the case in the US), then the car is not as green as one might think. But to be fair, 49mpg is still a quite impressive figure for a sportscar like the Tesla Roadster and the Tesla engineers deserve our respect...
100MPG 4 years ago
Tesla states that the car has an efficiency of 135mpg (US). Thats 1.74lt/100km or 162 UK mpg. Pretty good I thought! This however relates only to the station-to-wheel efficiency.
100MPG 4 years ago
The trouble is wind energy in the UK MAKES 0.5% of the nation's electricity. That in a country that has 40% of the EU's windiest locations! Solar is a big problem for less sunny states and world demand for silicon (micro chips and solar cells) means it is far more costly than coal. Nuclear takes 10+ years to build.
100MPG 4 years ago
Mitsubishi are realeasing their small EV in the UK this year. But the cost per mile based on electricity alone is over 20 cents. And the coal fired emissions of CO2?
100MPG 4 years ago
by centralizing the CO2 emissions at a power plant... more can be done about it... the reason is that when you have emissions centralized you can cost justify more advanced scrubber technology...
mrbizi 4 years ago 2
I like the concept. However, lets be realistic about the future. Even if the price of an EV came down to $20k in 2018 how are you going to supply the energy such cars need? CA may be able to do it with Solar as long as the price of Silicon comes down. But NY, Chicago, EU, Japan? Dirty coal or problematic Nuclear?
100MPG 4 years ago
actually, with the combination of solar and wind power, you could achieve 20%+ of the US electric demands... and solar and wind are both becoming more viable over time as the technology improves as the markets for those products increases and more engineers join the workforce with bright new ideas...
mrbizi 4 years ago
You cant drive this without your eyeglasses..
mikemonster 4 years ago
Even though it needs electricity, which comes from possibly polluting power plants, in total it's still more enviromental friendly than ordinary cars.
And when thinking of a scenario in which these electric cars would become more widespread many of you are forgetting the fact, that even if power plants start to pollute more because of the increased demands for more electricity, all oil refineries and oil tankers etc. correspondingly pollute much less due to decreased demands for fuel.
ginkong 4 years ago
Whoever says that it isn't decreasing emissions is wrog because even if it is getting the electricity made from a power plant it isn't always a coal power plant there are others such as wind and HEP's that produce clean energy.
Also the car itself isn't making any emmision unlike conventional energy sources cars use which make more polution adding it to what is already being made with the power plants so this means that the electric car does lower emissions.
LazyJ94 4 years ago
it's higher thermodynamical efficiency alone makes it better for the environment.

crippled82 4 years ago
I think it's about time someone comes out with an electric car that doesn't suck.
keljackson 4 years ago 2
Electric cars are getting a lot better over time.
I think if research keeps heading the righyt waqy we might get electric cars that are practical for everyday use.
LazyJ94 4 years ago
I agree. And I think the Tesla Roadster is a HUGE step towards this. It's just an electric car that doesn't suck. It's so simple I don't know why every other electric car before this had to look like a jellybean on wheels.
And their Sedan model is projected to have an even greater range. This is going to be nice.
keljackson 4 years ago
Sure a car that runs off electricity is great, but when you plug the car into the outlet, the power just comes from a coal power plant!

"Sure a car that runs off electricity is great, but when you plug the car into the outlet, the power just comes from a coal power plant!"
1) That's an out and out exaggeration. It could be coal, gas, hydro, nuclear, wind or geothermal.
2) Electric motors are a hell of a lot more efficient than gas engines.
3) I really doubt you are a Ron Paul fan. Methinks more likely a Huckabee fan pretending to be a Paultard.

i like how it said no emisions and showed a picture of a power plant (coincidentaly the place the energy for the car is produced)
its just moving the polution somewhere else. although it is still slightly more environmently to produce the electricity in a power plant.
