simple single lines...the show did expose a wide audience to Khansaheb. ("The old Indian Style" comment is totally inappropriate as is the 'mud hut ' comment). The great sitar exposion as Raviji termed it, had just occured an Shawn's decoration on Don's records are a purely plebian example of how the sitar was held by western pop. For Us who have delved into the beauty, grace & discipline of Indian music , it provided the spark. Have a little heart please , it was 1966.
a few things...Pete says the clip was from afilm taken 10 years prior to this show , so that would put it at around the mid 1950s. At that time pete was blacklisted in the usa from peroming because of his political beliefs. He only re-emerged in the early 1960s and this show "Rainbow Quest" was a real gift in terms of exposing a wider American Audience to the varied world of folk music. Granted Ustadji is not a ' folk ' performer and that Shawn Phillips' work on Donovan's records was only
And I guess that beautiful music was made in one of those mud huts in that huge city with poor people. No wonder there is the image of the "ugly American." I guess the instrument was also made in a mud hut by the "poor people."
Who is this idiot saying that Calcutta in 1964 is a huge city filled with mud huts? I was born in 1961in a very nice brick house and we took taxis, not elephants. There's nothing to say. Thank goodness the music by Khansaheb is here. Otherwise these host should just stay with there own culture (whatever that is).
its interesting to hear pete seeger calling imrat hussain "that fella who plays the seetaar". while a great humanist his musical talent ( or, rather, lack of it) is so evident in the opening minutes. decades from now we will still be listening to "that fella" while pete seeger's music will be, mercifully, completely forgotten.
The tabla player is Shaukat Ali Khan from Rampur. He became quite famous accompanying Ustad Imrat Khansahab and also his brother, Ustad Vilayat Khan and many other great artists.
I have one or two VK videos that have to be converted from VHS to DVD. I'll get those posted in the next while. I am also trying to get VK's last US concert.
I confirmed from Khaja Nisar (the son of Ustad Shaik Dawood Khan) that the tabla player is not Ustad Shaik Dawood. He definetely looks a lot like him, but doesn't sound like him.
