@spunkykite yes I know. I study biology and next week I have to visit a labratory where the use rats. don't want to, I love rats to much. but maybe someday I can stop it.
@daynaleigh101 I know what you mean! I lost one of my buddies about a month ago and bought two more as cage mates for the rat that was left behind. It's sad but I found moving on quickly helped, as I've made new memories with the new rats.
I recently lost one of my rats and the one left behind was so lonely it was hard to watch! but now she has a buddy so she's been alot calmer and happier :p
i keep em on average for 2 month teach em tricks, let em get comfortable with me, they live nice have toys and a rollin ball, but then i when time to feed ill let the snake crawl into their cage and wait for him to eat one, the other usually watches in horror. and then after that when its his time, however long before he lives alone in horror lol......i have even chopped off their fingers to the day before feeding but only did that once, i prefer blunt force, hammer to the head lighty
after the light hammer to the head they go into sersiors and dont die, i let em stay alive for an hour after that and then feed em, but most times i feed them 100% awake and alive and let the other watch his friend get eaten, once i hung one over the snakes head by his tail while the snake was eating and killing the one, i held the other one and inch over the snake by his tail, man did he start to squeek lmao.so let me tell ya they are social
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
they are snake food! i have even trained them to fet a ball for treats, i once had my snake out and in a rat tunnel i put it in, i through the little ball in and the rat ran in to fetch it for me and was eatten by the snake :), was really fun to watch or should i say hear the shreks and screams coming from inside his tunnel lol, that happend to Jay the rat I named and had for 4 months before sacrificing to my snake, he was a dumbo rat, black and white
@klazz he goes around to many of the rat videos and basically pastes the same comments. pretty sad. a desperate cry for attention from a lonely little kid.

@ProjectCircaBellum (continued) neglected by the black death plague because the feral rats carried fleas that held the disease. The feral dogs are far worse than feral rats, theyre much hardier and fearsome than a 1/2 lb rat and normal dogs do much more damage if provoked. Iver personally owned 6 rats as well as hampsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats, dogs and degus, the rats are hands down my favorite pet.
@ProjectCircaBellum Thats why I saved 2 from snakes today, they were my first choice, than came ferrets and rabbits. Hampsters are mean, degus are too exotic for me, I dont have the time for a dog or a cat, and guinea pigs are far too loud and just too big of a small pet for me

I have one rat at the moment, I've had her for almost a year. After watching this, I've decided to get another one. Just a question though, how big is your cage?
I have 4 Girls and 1 Boy, and they're so happy together!
And i say: Buy 3 or more Rats! Sure its ok to have 2(better than just one), but 3 and more are much happier than 2! Yes you have more work with 5 Rats, you need a bigger cage(mine are just in cage at night), and more time to play with. But its so beautiful to see how happy they are!
And please dont take the Rats out. Even in Summer they can catch a pneumonia so fast.. :s
@Tastinglacebo1 That sized cage is fine for now but if you can ever afford to get a bigger one then you definately should. Get another male rat. Males will get along just fine. I have three males and they're all best buddies.
im getting 3 brothers, if they come from the same place its not a problem ( i think, i never had a problem and all my pets were of are brothers or sisters.
@himaboy321 Most rats do not fight badly. If you get them from the same place, they prolly wont. If you get them from another adoption agency, you are suppose to keep them in a sep. house for 5 weeks to make sure they aren't sick... after quarantine is done, you introduce them on neutral territory (couch, bathtub, bed, etc) for 10-30 minutes at a time, all while providing supervision food and areas to hide/play in as distraction. to keep a boy and girl, neuter or spay one of them.
I'm getting 3 pet rats ♥ I had 2 gerbils but when one of them died his brother felt soooo lonely and I was told you can't put a young gerbil with an older one so he spend 2 years without is brother and it made me feel so sad. When you see that they do EVERYTHING together it is just heartbreaking to know that that little boy had to miss his brother for 2 years and it doesn't mather how many time you spend with your little friend, nothing can replace a friend of their own.
@hunter1155981 Yes. Almost all rats LOVE human interaction just like dogs, and they need an hour a day with their owners. You will find that even with two, the second you walk into the room, almost all rats will be at the corner of the cage staring at you, begging for attention ;) I have seven, and all of them cram into the corner closest to me in hopes that I'll open up the cage to play.
@TheAiDaN2110 Yes, but he would be much more happy with another rat. Rats are naturally supposed to be with other rats. I used to have two rats, and they slept right next to each other, and they would cuddle a ton. Trust me, it's the only way to go, and rats get bored when their humans aren't there, and who better to keep them company and play with them then another rat? It's your decision, but if you want the best for your rat, then get him a cage-mate.
I pity people who think rats are distusting and filthy creatures, as far as i'm concerned, people who think that are that themselves. I have 9 gorgeous boys and i would never be without them, they mean the world to me :)
@ldinchak Excuse me, but rats are amzing loving pets.
Yes, wild rats may cause dieseses, but that's because they go in sewers as a way of avoiding idiots because they are smart and know better.
But wild rats are still very nice. Besides, these are pet rats, and pet rats are free from dieseses and like being treated like a dog. You odviously know nothing about pocket pets and that rats are some of the best. You waste your time doing other things and are uneducated about these type of animals.
@ldinchak The bubonic plague was carried on the fleas, not the rats themselves. Thus, not only was it distributed on rats, but also on dogs, cats, cattle, rabbits, etc.. every mammal with fur could distribute it.
Rats have been domesticated for years - domesticated rats are very different than wild rats, and the two cannot be intermixed.
@xmustang There is a theory that fleas never carried the plague after all as it swept Norway twice and at no point was there any evidence of rats in the country :)
I have two ladies about 11 weeks old. But they have the strange habbit of 'attacking' eachother after I have played with them or put my hands in the cage. They don't bite eachother but their game does look a bit violent. Doesn't usually take more than half a minute or so. Should I worry or is this normal?
Getting two rats is actually a risk, as if you aren't playing with them a LOT , they will bond with eachother and not with you. Trust me, it happened to my brother and the two rats were like best friends. sure, it was cute but they didnt really trust anyone but each other.
@Goldenated That's not because he got two --that's because he didn't take the time to socialize them. It does take "a LOT" of time to bond with rats, regardless of whether you are bonding with a solitary rat or one in a pair. But if you start by handling them 15/minutes a time a day and build up, they should get better.
My rat Elliot recently passed on, and his best friend Sawyer... was so good to him while he was leaving... We set up a bed and a blanket for Elliot to make him comfy while he was going and Sawyer wanted to cuddle with him. Elliots blanket came off , and Sawyer Re-wrapped him up in it. They are not Disgusting creatures they are beautiful, compassionate, intelligent, Clean and Live too short. =( Good pets for Children too.
My rat's brother died last week and I can't find a new friend for him, I'm not allowed another one even if I could find one. He's nearly 2 years old now and spends most of his time sitting on my lap boggling, or running around my room. He never really played with his brother that much, they only used each other for snuggles. I know he should have a new friend but I honestly think he'll be ok, he seems really happy. I miss having a ton of rats :(
I was cleaning my rat's cage and he jumped up and clung to the wire just as I was closing it, and I accidently shut it on his finger. He's not using that paw much and I think it's broken ._. What to do?
the only disadvantage about having two or more rats is bite wounds that get infected and turn into a abscess. if your willing to pay vet bills and treat every bite wound with care than its best you have two. if your not then you probably shouldn't have one at all
I have just one rat because the cage would be too small. Maybe when I save up some money I'll get a better rat cage and some extra ratties. Until then I'll give as much love and attention to my Athena.
i have a huge cage and a lot of love. they are the best pets ever i have 14 now. i just got a tail less rat about 3 weeks ago. they all come when i call them. they run all over my apt. i call them my kids. when anyone asks how they are doing i talk about them like they were my first born. i wont have children because it would take away from my rats. your vid makes me cry i love it so much!!!!!!
Its funny people are saying its cruel to have one rat.. I have one rat He doesnt like other rats, he attacks them female or male. Ive given 3 different rats away to friends because he didnt get along with them and would hurt them between the age of 10 - 20 weeks. He is now 7 months old and is the happiest little fella he snuggles, wags his tail, wrestles and loves people.
I bought a pet rat couple of months ago and they just had one at that store by that time, I searched for some time another one to buy but couldt find it, when I finally found another one the vet told me that my rat was already to old for me to buy another one and said that he wouldnt accept another rat in his little house anymore. is that true? I realy wanted to buy another one but it took a while for me to find in here. what can I do now? I don't want to leave him so alone.
@BreMayer not strictly true, he might be a bit fussy about it but then again he might be absolutley fine with it, keep the reciept so if there is any problems u can return the new rat, iv got 11 that have all been introduced at various stages n iv never had a problem
@BreMayer there will be no problem if you introduce them properly and not just throw them together in one cage. Let them meet a couple of times outside. When they are calm two or three days in a row you can clean out the cage, put the rat new to the cage in first and later the other one. Mostly lonely rats don't make a big fuss over getting company. But if you just toss in a little one in his cage he might kill it. Introduce them correctly and they will get friends.
@TheKittyGroove They can be potty-trained for no.2 but they will mark their routs, pack and territory with pee... But to be honest - if they really have to pee mine all did it in the cage (had 14 rats by now in packs up to 9 rats).
i have a question! first of all, i am a LONG time rat owner, i love the little guys like babies of my own, but there is one thing i am unfamiliar with; pairs of the same sex. i've always had a male and a female, or just one male whom i spoiled. i'm intending to get another rat in the near future and i was going to get just one, but i am reconsidering that now. in my experience, males are much friendlier and calmer, but they can also fight with other males. do your boys happen to be litter mates?
@risky0x7 I know people who have groups of 6-7 male rats. Not more problem than a mixed group or females only. Just make sure you introduce them correctly (meeting over a couple of days before moving together) if they have not been together before. Fights can always happen - even with a mixed pair...
@linedancechicks very true, i've had several fights break out between rats even being litter mates, same sex, etc. thanks for responding. i just thought males might be more prone to fighting with each other (certainly was the case with my cage of male mice), but it makes a huge difference whether or not they've been introduced properly. if i were to get two males, they'd be brothers anyway, so luckily i won't have to worry about making sure they get to know each other first.
Your boys are such chubsters! Lol, I have a "little" girl who is HUGE. Trying to get the chubster to thin out, but we call her "Peach" I have 5 girls at the moment who love each other oh-so-much (My second oldest gives the 3 babies baths everyday...MAMA RAT!)
What I usually do when I find rats is mix cement and sugar in a plate. The sugar attracts them so they eat the mixing. The cement hardens in their stomachs as it mixes with the liquids and their insides' harden as they die.
i never had 2 rats. i only had 1 and he lived close to 5years. . i played with him 24/7. i took care of him and treated him like a king, he passed away with a huge smile on his face, he looked happy and at peace :') (this was 10years ago and i still miss him)
@RocketKira It depends on age and what sex you have. As rats get older just like people they become more frail and skinny. Watch out for bumps, they could be a sign of cancer which is common in rats. I have found that a diet high in fat and corn makes rats more prone to cancer. FYI do not use cedar or pine shavings, they have a delicate respiratory system.
answer to the title: so that they can escape their cage, copulate, and give birth to many more rats. Then after their numbers have grown 10 fold they will consume everything in your house and eventually you, enjoy
@wokangoman What about having rats of only one sex? Will they also "give birth to many more rats" and "consume everything in your house and eventually you"? We have had female rats for 6 years now and are still alive and in possession of all our property (though some of it with a few gnaw holes, admittedly...), seems we have been incredibly lucky so far. (...rolling eyes...)
I had one rat. He became a vicious and destructive beast. He chewed the walls and attacked my hand. I bled for five minutes. I read more about rats and realized that they are social animals and need to live in pairs for their mental health. Just like humans. I bought him a companion and now he is a happy and well behaved pet. It is so cute watching them chase each other and play. Having two rats is much more interesting.
I saw this video and bought a second rat. Loved her with all my heart.. Then my first rat attacked her and she was really sick for the next couple of days. She died not long after :/ I figured my first rat ruby was too cute to be angry at so I gave her a cuddle and she died that night. God is a cruel man :(!
lost my oldest rat Sephiroth 3 days ago, i miss him so much, he died in my arms, and took a piece of my heart with him. he was 2yrs 8mo, albino. i still have my 2 girls 8mo old zoe and zuri
@FHomeBrew That might not be the best idea, because she has likely bonded very strongly with you. To tear her away from her human might be devastating, emotionally.
@greysquare7 Though I'm certain they have sensations that are more than just superficial senses, I doubt they would be heartbroken for very long. Regardless, I'll take your advice since I'm not certain and wouldn't want to harm her. She does know my scent very well, plus I can read her body language a bit. So, oké. I introduced 3 new rats to her today, but she wasn't too happy about that. So she'll die a lonely death (species wise) but at least she can stay with our family.
@FHomeBrew Yeah, it's a hard call. I want to impress upon you that I am absolutely NOT a pet rat expert, I have only had my 2 sisters for about 3 months now, but I've read a bit about their behaviorisms. You may want to speak with a breeder, I bet they'd have the perfect information.
Oh my god, I loved this. I don't plan on buying a rat right now, but I know they make really, really good pets, and I would definitely have them for pets, so this was very informative. If I'm ever a rat owner, I will own two or maybe three =) Again, great video!
beautiful video and adorable ratties! i have mice now (1 deer mouse and 2 house mice) and yes, they do need each other for so many reasons... <3

It's your decision, but if you want the best for your rat, then get him a cage-mate.

you flower loveing pathetic loving losers!!! These things are notorious for carrying diseases like bubonic plague, typhus amongst other things!!!
ldinchak 1 month ago
@ldinchak Excuse me, but rats are amzing loving pets.
Yes, wild rats may cause dieseses, but that's because they go in sewers as a way of avoiding idiots because they are smart and know better.
But wild rats are still very nice. Besides, these are pet rats, and pet rats are free from dieseses and like being treated like a dog. You odviously know nothing about pocket pets and that rats are some of the best. You waste your time doing other things and are uneducated about these type of animals.
cheacky15 1 month ago
@ldinchak bubonic plague diddnt come from rats, but from flees. If you want to insult rat lovers atleast get your facts together ;)
annux999 1 month ago
@ldinchak What is wrong with you? It's not their fault that happened, if you had the flu, I wouldn't blame it on you for the whole thing!
mrsmarshmallowmush 1 month ago
@ldinchak The bubonic plague was carried on the fleas, not the rats themselves. Thus, not only was it distributed on rats, but also on dogs, cats, cattle, rabbits, etc.. every mammal with fur could distribute it.
Rats have been domesticated for years - domesticated rats are very different than wild rats, and the two cannot be intermixed.
xmustang 1 month ago
@xmustang There is a theory that fleas never carried the plague after all as it swept Norway twice and at no point was there any evidence of rats in the country :)

I have two ladies about 11 weeks old. But they have the strange habbit of 'attacking' eachother after I have played with them or put my hands in the cage. They don't bite eachother but their game does look a bit violent. Doesn't usually take more than half a minute or so. Should I worry or is this normal?
therodent7 1 month ago
Getting two rats is actually a risk, as if you aren't playing with them a LOT , they will bond with eachother and not with you. Trust me, it happened to my brother and the two rats were like best friends. sure, it was cute but they didnt really trust anyone but each other.
Goldenated 1 month ago

I miss having a ton of rats :(

the only disadvantage about having two or more rats is bite wounds that get infected and turn into a abscess. if your willing to pay vet bills and treat every bite wound with care than its best you have two. if your not then you probably shouldn't have one at all
TheDreamwolf31 1 month ago
I have just one rat because the cage would be too small. Maybe when I save up some money I'll get a better rat cage and some extra ratties. Until then I'll give as much love and attention to my Athena.

BreMayer 2 months ago
@BreMayer not strictly true, he might be a bit fussy about it but then again he might be absolutley fine with it, keep the reciept so if there is any problems u can return the new rat, iv got 11 that have all been introduced at various stages n iv never had a problem
TheLordShaithis 2 months ago
@BreMayer there will be no problem if you introduce them properly and not just throw them together in one cage. Let them meet a couple of times outside. When they are calm two or three days in a row you can clean out the cage, put the rat new to the cage in first and later the other one. Mostly lonely rats don't make a big fuss over getting company. But if you just toss in a little one in his cage he might kill it. Introduce them correctly and they will get friends.
BTW: packs of 3 are better...

just wondering do they relieve themselves wherever or can I train one to go in their cage? Im a beginner with rats/mice and Im really fond of them
TheKittyGroove 2 months ago
@TheKittyGroove They can be potty-trained for no.2 but they will mark their routs, pack and territory with pee... But to be honest - if they really have to pee mine all did it in the cage (had 14 rats by now in packs up to 9 rats).
linedancechicks 2 months ago
i have a question! first of all, i am a LONG time rat owner, i love the little guys like babies of my own, but there is one thing i am unfamiliar with; pairs of the same sex. i've always had a male and a female, or just one male whom i spoiled. i'm intending to get another rat in the near future and i was going to get just one, but i am reconsidering that now. in my experience, males are much friendlier and calmer, but they can also fight with other males. do your boys happen to be litter mates?
risky0x7 2 months ago
@risky0x7 I know people who have groups of 6-7 male rats. Not more problem than a mixed group or females only. Just make sure you introduce them correctly (meeting over a couple of days before moving together) if they have not been together before. Fights can always happen - even with a mixed pair...
linedancechicks 2 months ago
@linedancechicks very true, i've had several fights break out between rats even being litter mates, same sex, etc. thanks for responding. i just thought males might be more prone to fighting with each other (certainly was the case with my cage of male mice), but it makes a huge difference whether or not they've been introduced properly. if i were to get two males, they'd be brothers anyway, so luckily i won't have to worry about making sure they get to know each other first.
risky0x7 2 months ago
Your boys are such chubsters! Lol, I have a "little" girl who is HUGE. Trying to get the chubster to thin out, but we call her "Peach" I have 5 girls at the moment who love each other oh-so-much (My second oldest gives the 3 babies baths everyday...MAMA RAT!)

What I usually do when I find rats is mix cement and sugar in a plate. The sugar attracts them so they eat the mixing. The cement hardens in their stomachs as it mixes with the liquids and their insides' harden as they die.

I don't mean to be rude, but are they supposed to be so... plump? Mine are very slim, so are they underweight/should I worry?
RocketKira 2 months ago
@RocketKira It depends on age and what sex you have. As rats get older just like people they become more frail and skinny. Watch out for bumps, they could be a sign of cancer which is common in rats. I have found that a diet high in fat and corn makes rats more prone to cancer. FYI do not use cedar or pine shavings, they have a delicate respiratory system.
Wintersong34 2 months ago
answer to the title: so that they can escape their cage, copulate, and give birth to many more rats. Then after their numbers have grown 10 fold they will consume everything in your house and eventually you, enjoy
wokangoman 2 months ago

My rat lost her sister last night, due to cancer. She's now 25 months old. If she lives to be 48 it's a long and lonely road ahead :-(
I can't get new ones because I'm moving out after this one dies. Should I give her away to someone who has some company for her?
FHomeBrew 3 months ago
@FHomeBrew That might not be the best idea, because she has likely bonded very strongly with you. To tear her away from her human might be devastating, emotionally.
greysquare7 3 months ago
@greysquare7 Though I'm certain they have sensations that are more than just superficial senses, I doubt they would be heartbroken for very long. Regardless, I'll take your advice since I'm not certain and wouldn't want to harm her. She does know my scent very well, plus I can read her body language a bit. So, oké. I introduced 3 new rats to her today, but she wasn't too happy about that. So she'll die a lonely death (species wise) but at least she can stay with our family.
FHomeBrew 3 months ago
@FHomeBrew Yeah, it's a hard call. I want to impress upon you that I am absolutely NOT a pet rat expert, I have only had my 2 sisters for about 3 months now, but I've read a bit about their behaviorisms. You may want to speak with a breeder, I bet they'd have the perfect information.
