I watched this race when it happened and thought, "finally, Mark did it!" To this day whenever I watch this race I think he really earned it. Dave said it right - if someone was going to beat him, he was going to have to pay the price and Mark did.
Mark Allen is a very articulate and charitable man during interviews. He is very humble and shows great respect for his competitors. A real class act.
UNbelievable, best IM ever - 100%. It still sends shivers down my spine, 20 years on.
And the aid station workers werent telling them how to drink from the bottles, that was Scott telling them to take the lids off teh bottles before handing them over. He was getting cranky toward the end, I think he knew he could not drop Allen and it wasnt going to be his day
It is because of people like Hoyt that I push myself as hard as I can. I sold my car a few years ago and now I train riding to work and back, then running. Now I need to add swimming, inline skating and rowing... NO EXCUES!
ive been on youtube watching videos of so many different things.. and i can honestly say this is the best series i have ever watched. Tottally unbelievable. The raw courage of those 2 athletes just is amazing. And i dont care what anyone says. Dick Hoyt - FATHER OF THE CENTURY.
just incredible, i could only imagine the amount of emotions that were between father and son. jus competing by yourself is a feat in the triathlon, a test of the human bodies limits. my dad did a few triathlons and i have been recently thinkin about training for it, even tho im goin to have to lose some serious weight since im about 197, the lowest weight i got to was 182, las summer, but i jus want to prove to myself i can do it. I loved the videos take keaz malama pono
The best Ironman race of all time. Those guys were just ripping the marathon at 3:37/km. pace. And you can't overlook Paula's record, which only made the day more unbelievable.
I had this particular race on tape, on VHS that I had taped off of the TV. I watched it almost every day for about 2 months straight.
My mom would come home from work and see me watching it again and again and she thought I was some psycho or something. But I could not help it, I just could not stop watching it......plus it helped tremendously with my training.
8:09 finish unreal. No wonder todays pros respect these guys - they are solid

Paula Newby Fraser...one of the best female athletes of all time.
Not to mention Dick and Ricky Hoyt.

it's funny, that guy in the first 20 seconds of the video telling dave and mark how to open a water bottle.
ryanjames2007 2 years ago 2
@ryanjames2007 Actually, I think he was instructing the other volunteers to have the water bottles already open for the athletes.
