What do large balls of twine say about America (not that I'm American - but I'm Canadian, and we also have more than our fair share of "The World's Largest _____")? They say that America is a nation that cultivates a culture based on fame, with or without genuine reason. Clearly there are several cities competing for the largest ball of twine, though the twine has no use beyond fame. It also says something about Americans wasting time, resources, etc, towards the cause of self-importance.

Now, maybe I'm biased because I am American, but I think a lot of the reason why people make "World's Largest _____" is because we like to try to push things to the limit. I agree, it does wast time and resources some of the time, but I don't think it is strictly for a cause of self importance. I believe that a lot of it is just for fun and entertainment, which we can never seem to get enough of in the US.
