Great song...saw the Police @ Madison Square Garden back in 07, and Stewart Copeland kept tossing his sticks into the audience between sets...while I was just out of the range of possibly catching a pair, was still a great show!
Ghost In The Machine is one of the greatest albums ever, start to finish. Even the so-called fillers are brilliant. I don't even like rock music but I LOVE this album even to this day, listen to it often. Stewart's always interesting to listen to. OUTSTANDING drummer

"There exists only the present instant...a Now which always and whithout end is itself new. There is no yesterday nor tomorrow, but only Now, as it was a thousand years ago and will be a thousand years hence"~by: Meister Eckhart,1260-1328~"Dicebant mihi sodales,si sepulchrum amicae visitarem, curas meas aliquar tulum fore levatas
The downbeat on the verse is hard to follow on this..the drums are in a different place to the bass and the keys. The Police were really in their own space in the 80's sort of like U2
The best song Sting has ever written, and the most emotionally intense! Laying back with the headphones on and undulging in this music and lyrics brings tears to my eyes. This song may be 30 years old, but how appropriate it is in the current climate of near social and economic collapse. Who is writing songs like this right now?
Listen to this song in total darkness...spirits will emerge - percussion, mood, tune is hypnotic. One of a kind song with special meaning. Music does not get better than this-thanks for the post.

Where does the answer lie ? Living from day to day, If it's something we can't buy, There must be another way ! <<<<<< Great lyrics, especially in the materialistic 80s
It`s very interesting to listen to Stewart talking about drumming. I knew Reggae was different from the normal Rock & Roll beat but I had no idea it was so stunning for drummers back then, he talks about Reggae beat like there`s no other thing in the world.
Stewart is awesome!! ... the soundtrack for Rumble Fish still makes my head explode..he's done countless movie soundtracks since his days with the Police , but Rumble Fish makes my head 'slpode
@Dfins79 Yes, they were a very innovative band, their sound is unique because each member has a very distinctive style and the mixture of Rock, Jazz & Rock helped in what you said.
The band more completely than ever, despite having only three members.
But geniuses are three:
Stewart with beats that no one had ever dared to do, technique and perfection, know just what I did.
Andy, the guitarist with agility and creativity, the inventor of some effects, and the famous candied notes.
And Sting, lead singer with the right voice to the rhythm and the right band, and there's still a show piece on the counter-baixo.A best band in the world in my opinion.
Stewart's drumming is a lot like many jazz greats in that the more closely you listen to it the more you realize how incredible his finesse and mastery of syncopation was. His contribution back then was so far ahead of its time it's still ahead of its time.
Was living on Montserrat when they recorded this album. Saw the trio hanging out at Old Road Bay. Later in '87 I had the privilege to record my compositions at Air Studios.
This song is hella tight. I make beats and one day i heard this song at work on XM radio on the 80's channel and was like WOW. Good song period. I had to sample it.
@tedGEGI and sadly as most bassists go, they are never appreciated. Sting is certainly an exception, not by means of his instrument but through his voice.
@Narthma Nothing ludicrous about it. In terms of musicality, originality and control of their instruments, the Police are miles high above all of them. I'm not saying those bands are bad. They are all great in some form or another but in terms of musicianship, they don't stack up. That's my personal opinion and I know that it's not everyone's.
@dartman71 The Police are my favorite and Stew is a drum god, agree with you! Love this tune, the bass line is killer and love Stew pounding on that snare.
@Threewinds I agree that most people think of those guys as great but Stewart outweighs all of them. He was original. Bonham is way overrated in my opinion. He basically took what Buddy Rich did and put it into rock music. Even his set up was a Buddy rip off. I'm not saying he's bad but he's not as great as everyone says. Being a professional percussionist, I know what I speak of.
Throwing the bass Drum on 2 and 4 and accentimg the upbeat is not as easy as many think, He playes the HiHats as if he were licking pussy WELL! One of my bands is a Police tribute and our bassist (amazing) sings and plays chili peppe trib band too, anyways Sting cheats like hell on thisd tune live! bass comes in on the end of 2. Tough for the bassist to play that rythem and sing
I don't think that Sting ruined the songs in the re-union tour. Before that tour I've never heard a single song of the Police (well, maybe Every Breath you take) cuz I have 16 years old, but when I bought the DVD I enjoyed the music so much that the Police became my favourite band. Then I heard the old versions of the songs and I think the new ones are the same, but updated. Besides, I think Sting sings in that way because he is older.
No one "ruined" the re-union. I saw three different shows on that tour and each one was better than the one before. They don't hate each other. As far as comparing them to the Stones, Floyd and Zeppelin - there's no contest. They outweigh all of those bands on sheer talent alone.
You are entitled to your opinion, though in this case you are wrong.
The Police might be AS talented as the Stones, Floyd and Zeppelin, but no way are they MORE talented. Just taking their drummers alone, you are talking about Charlie Watts, Nick Mason and John Bonham. I don't disagree that Stewart Copeland is one of the Top 10 Rock Drummers ever, but those three guys are also in the Top 10.
It is no accident that all four groups are considered among the greatest bands ever
@chubphucka But neil peart can't play for every band in the world can he. Just because is one of the best doesn't mean every other drummer is garbage.
Stewart Copeland did his best to ruin the band's reunion tour, changing the speed of songs just to annoy Sting, who he obviously hates. That is the ultimate in amateur behaviour - and one of the reasons why The Police will never be considered an all-time great band like the Stones, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Actually, I hate to say it, but it was actually Sting that ruined the re-union. I'm a major Police fan and I was hoping to see them live this time, since I was too young to see them play live back in the 80's. But I didn't, and now I'm kind of glad. Sting completely ruined his own songs. He sings everything in a much lower key and a LOT slower. He ruined his own songs by trying to make them sound like some kind of jazz or night club crap! That's the way he sings now and I hate it.
@ct92404 You shouldn`t say he ruined the songs, it`s pretty rude. In my opinion the new versions are cool and obviously different from others, but The Police has always changed their songs live, even when the were young.
I think it`s better for Sting to lower the tone than to try singing in a high register when he wouldn`t be able to sing them that way anymore.
...For example, look at how Sting sings "Synchronicity II" now and compare it to the original. I've seen videos of the re-union tour and I wanted to cry when I saw what Sting did to that song. I can't believe it...he f*cked up his own song.
Stewart is way too humble here, basic drums are easy to play, but the level at which he plays drums is very complicated, and he has a special talent, which of course he has also worked hard at. Yes, any dope can play drums, but not just anyone can play the way he can. He's a brilliant drummer, period.
@Alejandroenfuego John Bonham certainly thought so as well. Before he died, he made a pilgrimage to check him and the police out backstage. I don't think he met Stewart though. He met Sting who was a bit arrogant. Funnily enough, Bonham took it in stride and told his friend who was with him that night that it was OK. That's the way he was when Zeppelin conquered the world too.
@Alejandroenfuego - Def is...when I saw the Police @ Madison Square Garden in 07, Stewart kept tossing his sticks into the audience between songs, but I was just a coupla rows too high from his target area to grab a pair. :-( Still a great show, regardless!
@Alejandroenfuego yeah but remember they broke up because of ego conflicts! too humble? ha! He was just trying to do what was appropriate for the song. Why do you think the Grateful Dead let their drummers play alone on stage for 20 minutes at every show? So they could air out their egos and keep it simple when it needed to be.
@Alejandroenfuego - If you're a musician I really hope you spread that wisdom to any students you have if you teach. I used to have a few students I taught bass and piano until touring schedules just simply kept me too busy. But I told them once you've got the basic theory, fundamentals, and mechanics of your instrument down, it's going to be up what you personally put into it that's going to define "your" playing and "your" personality on your instrument is ultimately the difference.
I grew up with this tune

Stewart was just jealous of not being as successful as Sting. Shame, great band.
