i remember buying this album because i was in a rut on guitar... wanted to put something new in my ears... just picked it up based on the cover... best purchase i ever made... i started modeling my fingerstyle after his style... love his playing and emotion. If i listen to it through headphones, i feel winter... I feel the cold air... amazing music!
i met George Winston at a concert in person. i had his winter in to spring album on vinyl never opened to get it signed by him. so here what happened... i finally got my chance to talk to him and i asked him to sign the album. and there are lots of people asking him question so with out thinking he opened the album up! my eye fell out of my head when he did this. i kept my cool though lol. every one gasped around him and he looked down and said i guess i was supost to do that.
To see him in concert is to spend an hour and a half in a distant place that's incredibly peaceful and fulfilling. I have always loved his music but watching him play is almost surreal!
George winston Ludivico einaudi Brian crain Dan campbell Kevin kern Yiruma Michael nyman Yann tiersen Giovanni allevi Yuki kajiura Helen jane long and the list go on.........
We used this song in the background of our Christmas performance's drama, about a man who had lost everything and had gone onto drugs, and about a man who was losing his home and an elderly man in a nursing home who just wanted to die. Then a lady (played by my mom) came over to all of them giving them a Bible and reminding them that there's hope in God and he will give you all that you need. So they come to know Christ in the drama. It was very touching. I think the drama got to everyone.
I have searched this particular piano solo since 1994 and today after thinking of the woman whom burned this into my heart, I finally re-live that one purposeful evening we shared. This is simply the most moving and most beautiful piano solo that moves me in ways only myself and the other (K) can imagine. After 17+ years I find the music that ignites my past, simply beautiful, simply.
I don't think music being in public schools has to do anything with it. There are still great musicians out there. But our definition of great is different from the masses because our perception levels are so different. If you grow up around crap music, odds are, your are going to "like" it. Being subjected to every type of music and still arriving at the likes of Lady Gaga is what we call stupidity, not lack of education. Although I can guarantee you Winston's motives are for the art, not fame.
It is March, now, but as I listen to this piece I feel like it is November; the brisk breeze at the bay rustling by as I walk bare feet on these white sands. Beautiful feeling!
you do realize that thanksgiving is a celebration of massive slaughter of native people by white europeans, it's a celebration of white people success by natives down fall. You do realize that the turkey you bough in your supermarket was raised on stairoids in 2 months from birth to death, never seen the light of sun and was slaughtered for a fake holiday. You do realize that eating chemicals and plastic causes cancer....well happy thanksgiving!
@toddcharry I feel that way. I'm only 19 but my mother used to play his album December and this song make me very emotional reminding me of my childhood and what a great life I had and still have. I adore all of his music; especially December, the album.
@toddcharry This has been my favorite George Winston tune for years- it brings out a lot of emotion in me, and visualizations and memories.... fabulous.
@Stratmastuh if u don't think he is a great musician look up George winston playing cat and mouse. He is amazing and has a wonderful gift of being one of the best pianists in the world
How much flame will I get on this video for saying that George Winston actually isn't that brilliant of a musician, despite writing easy-to-listen-to beautiful music.
@Stratmastuh Oh, I guess somebody already said that. Either way, do it. =) He truly is incredibly talented with his technique, but he chooses to write more meaningful pieces instead of showy and flashy ones.
definitely my favorite winston song. so emotionally perfect. simple, sad but somehow hopeful. great song. if you like instrumental piano i'd love feedback on my own songs in my channel (click my name) you may like "after the rain has fallen" if you like this song...
The truth is that it takes pure gifting and technique to make you feel something so deep. He is also a technical Pianist and proves it in other pieces. Amazing Man.
I was looking up events in Visalia Ca and found this guy gonna play there. This guy is amazing!!! Never heard of him before!! I am officially a Fan of George Winston. This is the kind of piano music i've been searching for!!!
The way he did this is so incredible he made that song cry on the fly i love his variation on his own piece... sounds like heaven TOUCH ON THE KEYS IS INCREDIBLE I WANNA SOUNDS THIS GOOD WHEN I PLAY...passion at its finest you can hear a purpose in everynote
I agree with many points that Fretbuzz makes but I think it is going too far to call it bullshit or to compare it to a child's drawing on a refrigerator. Surely it requires more skill and technique than that. It IS a rather cliched progression and it IS a composition that could be matched content-wise by many college music majors; however, how many of them could actually sit at the piano like George and let the music flow out of their hearts without worrying that it is not technical enough?
For all you complex music people, this might be simple, but to someone like me who only hears good music and bad, as a mood for feeling it promotes, this is very relaxing, and does set a mood, simple or complex it fits a mind and feeling set, and is very well done with passion even if it is easy,Funny thing is music you didnt like 10 years ago, might , become appreciated now, and music you liked then, might be stupid today, funny thing is if its done well, should be appreciated.
I've loved this piece for a long time now. I'm a little not used to his rendition here, though. I'm surprised no one has spoken of how he really and very deliberately hammers some of the notes. It's such a gentle song, to me, that that feels incongruent.
Will people please give the lady ga ga statements a rest, as if her music has anything to do with this. There is nothing wrong with gaga, depends on what you are looking for at the time. I wouldn't listen to Wagner if I wanted a calming tune like this. And I wouldn't listen to this if I wanted to dance in a club. Everything in its season.
December is the only one album (in music history) in Billboard charts for more than 10 years. A real world record! Still in charts for more than 10 years! Thank you George!

Hey, I did that too, and after joinmeform's comment, I guess we need to review our thoughts on music! I mean of course, people like me and you enjoy this type of music but to others, it might sound boring. I do think that Lady Gaga deserves respect (after joinmeform's commen), but I agree, we shouldn't be affected by media on our judgement of good music.
loved george winston solo piano long before when i was still in high school. and just recently i was able to have all copies of his albums. GREAT! and like it alot!
don't know abou tha' rest of you, but this tune comes across as sooo sooo sad to me....the album version seems a bit sadder than the live version...but love emmm' both
@boogiebongcal That's ironic, I find it somehow comforting and gratifying. Just depends on the mood and setting. What an inspiration, that guy. I didn't realize how much he influenced me until I tried my own compositions earlier this year.
@negativewashout lol this is ironic; your user id is "negative" and you find thanksgiving comforting , mine is "boogie" and i find it sooooo sad IS'NT IT IRONIC.... each chord pulls at my heartstrings.... the magic and mystery of music.... means something special and different to everyone
@BeethovenJay Just goes to show that we need to initiate our own cultural renaissance. We can begin by supporting musicians like Mr. Winston and turning away from Lady Gaga. It's time we stopped listening to what we are told is good music by the media. They no longer deserve our respect or our support.
@BeethovenJay,off of your past post. who are you to say that lady gaga isn't a good, creative musician? now I'm not saying that I like Lady Gaga and I really do love this music that Mr. Winston is playing, BUT there are people who enjoy Gaga's music. So isn't that what music is about? about people that enjoy and are passionate about someones art? Music is a relative art, in fact any kind of art is, It just depend's on the person. So you can not realistically say that we need to refuse Lady Gaga.
@joinmeform I completely agree. I happen to be a HUGE fan of George winston and Lady Gaga. I love and appreciate the skill and talent from both artists. They may be vastly different, but they are both incredible musicians, and incredibly talented people. I can't stand when people hate on Lady gaga, she is extremely creative and most people just dissmiss her work without really examining how great it is. and at the same time, I grew up with winston and think his work is captivatingly beautiful.
@BeethovenJay The world went from this to Lady Gaga because the arts were ripped out of public schools in the mid-80s so fewer people are now skilled at playing great music or knowing what great musical talent is.
@gregorybyerline :P that doesn't explain the BeeGee's they where in the 70s haha
I'm sure you can go back further for music that was over played or over rated or what ever you want to call it. in the 50s they blamed the curroption of the youth to the "devils music" Rock N Roll there will always be excuses and finger pointing but the simple truth is. People don't need anyone to tell them what is good/bad or what they should enjoy. Music is Art and is in the eye of the beholder
While I agree that this is wonderful music; it was composed in 1982 and didn't come near a Grammy. Some Grammy winners that year were Sheena Easton and Kim Carnes. In 1983 some of the winners were Men at Work and Toto. While you may like these artists better than Lady Gaga, your political premise most certainly doesn't hold...How did we get from Ray Charles to Men at Work? Must have been all that fiddling with art education in the 60's...
@gregorybyerline this it it 21 st century, everybody is thinking that we evaluate but we degradate more and more :( . I'm 16 years old, and when other from my class listen to Gaga and Bieber, I listen to real beautiful music.
@gregorybyerline - unfortunately, I must agree with you. I started my schooling in my native country Peru, where I was taught music. But when I moved to the USA to continue with high school, music was almost gone already. I will always be in debt to my grandmother Aurora who had the patience to teach me some skills for piano - I just wish I had the same talent as this man playing in this video. As for musical talent in today's students....hmm, I can only cry when I hear Hip-Hop, Rap, Lady Gaga.
@gregorybyerline All is not lost, life is resilient, if you or I care, we are in a position to improve things, even if for only one person, even if only for ourselves, the past is the past and yes it did happen, and now, what today, what delightful way will we bring more music back - or forward - how will we innovate and explore now? Hope is not lost unless you say it is.
@gregorybyerline Though I am not a Gaga fan at all, in fact the fad can not end FAST ENOUGH! She knows her music and the theory that goes along with. There are still people who know what they are doing with their instruments...but now we, music lovers, just have to look a little harder...its out there,
@BeethovenJay The response is that the world believes that this type of music is for elevators and is a shame because this if it is musical indeed and not lady gaga. Excuse Englishman does not speak. A greeting
I remember, when my father was alive, he liked to play this cd in the morning. it was one of his favourite cds. we heard the cd at the breakfast and i loved it. everytime, he did that, the morning was great.
Too much ego around here, Chopin and Satie has nothing to do here, George Winston it's George Winston, you can like it or hate it, but as many other composers, don't go around saying "His compositions are like 5th grade poetry."
I totally doubt the people who are talking bad can't even compose.
this song is tight, i love the piano, i wish i knew how to play it but it take a lot of time. this song makes me think alot of wen i was a kid an all the things i did an had happen in my life the good an the bad, an too Thebigpeeaye better believe it there is a god, :D Amen
I bet mr. fretbuzz there never played piano, but that does'nt even matter. stick to your guitar and maybe you'll make something that us unleaned musicians can call bullshit. Winston may not be a technical piano wizard, but the man knows how to put together a song that can truly move the soul.
@vujadae0001 In fact, piano was my first instrument, though I don't call myself a pianist, by any stretch. But I can play this dreck.
I'm afraid you're all missing the point. I'm not talking about technical wizardry, I'm talking about musical substance, which this lacks. Take a beautiful folk song like Danny Boy. So simple, yet so compelling. This is trite nonsense.
This song touches me more deeply than any other song I can think of. It makes me think of my past (when it originally came out) but also of my future. It just seems like the kind of song that should be playing when your sitting around at age 96 thinking back on your life and trying to decide if you did okay or not.
i remember buying this album because i was in a rut on guitar... wanted to put something new in my ears... just picked it up based on the cover... best purchase i ever made... i started modeling my fingerstyle after his style... love his playing and emotion.

How did the world go from this... to Lady Gaga??

@BeethovenJay don't understand it myself.... This is so beautiful! peaceful and full of emotion... ;)

@BeethovenJay Just goes to show that we need to initiate our own cultural renaissance. We can begin by supporting musicians like Mr. Winston and turning away from Lady Gaga. It's time we stopped listening to what we are told is good music by the media. They no longer deserve our respect or our support.
ironangel6 1 year ago
@BeethovenJay,off of your past post. who are you to say that lady gaga isn't a good, creative musician? now I'm not saying that I like Lady Gaga and I really do love this music that Mr. Winston is playing, BUT there are people who enjoy Gaga's music. So isn't that what music is about? about people that enjoy and are passionate about someones art? Music is a relative art, in fact any kind of art is, It just depend's on the person. So you can not realistically say that we need to refuse Lady Gaga.
joinmeform 1 year ago
@joinmeform I completely agree. I happen to be a HUGE fan of George winston and Lady Gaga. I love and appreciate the skill and talent from both artists. They may be vastly different, but they are both incredible musicians, and incredibly talented people. I can't stand when people hate on Lady gaga, she is extremely creative and most people just dissmiss her work without really examining how great it is. and at the same time, I grew up with winston and think his work is captivatingly beautiful.

@BeethovenJay Whats wrong with Lady Gaga?
xoxoDAVETANGOxoxo 1 year ago
i know, right?
sergrl127 1 year ago
@BeethovenJay The world went from this to Lady Gaga because the arts were ripped out of public schools in the mid-80s so fewer people are now skilled at playing great music or knowing what great musical talent is.
gregorybyerline 1 year ago 58
@gregorybyerline :P that doesn't explain the BeeGee's they where in the 70s haha
I'm sure you can go back further for music that was over played or over rated or what ever you want to call it. in the 50s they blamed the curroption of the youth to the "devils music" Rock N Roll there will always be excuses and finger pointing but the simple truth is. People don't need anyone to tell them what is good/bad or what they should enjoy. Music is Art and is in the eye of the beholder
AyumiSerendipity 1 year ago
@gregorybyerline Did you know that Lady Gaga studied music? She is actually a really talented person, she just puts out crap! :/ It's sad.
emilywaltonx 1 year ago
@gregorybyerline

@gregorybyerline why do you have to hate on lady gaga? at least she's professional compared to those like selena gomez and justin bieber :(

Hope is not lost unless you say it is.
andrewfynn 3 months ago
@gregorybyerline Apples and Oranges. Gaga is impressive in her own right - I thoroughly enjoy both.
protruckguy 3 months ago
@gregorybyerline Though I am not a Gaga fan at all, in fact the fad can not end FAST ENOUGH! She knows her music and the theory that goes along with. There are still people who know what they are doing with their instruments...but now we, music lovers, just have to look a little harder...its out there,

Too much ego around here, Chopin and Satie has nothing to do here, George Winston it's George Winston, you can like it or hate it, but as many other composers, don't go around saying "His compositions are like 5th grade poetry."
I totally doubt the people who are talking bad can't even compose.

Xius7 1 year ago
I bet mr. fretbuzz there never played piano, but that does'nt even matter. stick to your guitar and maybe you'll make something that us unleaned musicians can call bullshit. Winston may not be a technical piano wizard, but the man knows how to put together a song that can truly move the soul.
vujadae0001 1 year ago
