This is great to see,i was there check out 5.15 videos that people submitted as part of the compitition for best video by fans the winner is very good
We couldnt see John play alot of the solo because he stuck close to the amp line during it, but he came back during the brief break and had a smoke behind the stacks and waved up at the bunch of us sitting up there - best sound I ever heard at a concert until then, I started buying side-stage seats ever after that.. It is so amazing to see a fan clip from virtually our view, only better.
So fantastic that you filmed this, you must have been within sight of us at this gig, I saw it with my future wife from the restricted-view seats just behind John's side of the stage. (We'd gotten engaged the day before and went and bought a ring after the fact that day in Ealing Common, though we we over on a trip from Canada at the time).
I know Kenny Jones took a LOT of stick for his follow up gig to Keith Moon. But, Im sorry, I have never warmed up to Zach Starkey....this wonderful clip of John simply confirms it...fucker sounds to me as if he (Starkey) is mailing it in...good timekeeper but NOTHING electrifying.
And john e. with his arteries clogged with fucking cholesterol still puts the boy to shame. Goddamn I do miss The Ox.
@videostan yeah but Zak is not supposed to be doing anything spectacular here, it's John's solo - this is not a Heven And Hell type situation where everyone is soloing at once.
Ba ha ha...at 0:30 -- "wait -- wait -- there's more". Never saw him do that before, nor the hand-whip behind the back toward the end. Love and respect always, to John, Pete, Roger, Keith, and all The WHO.
Shame the audio on this one is not what it could have been. The Who had a short era when Starkey (you can see him on the drums) was with them before thunderfingers passed away where they had skills like the Keith Moon era with the maturity, hell, they rocked the New Your Concerts. That 5:15 bass solo was two hand technique long before Eddie Van Halen.
Yeah they were great. MOON was absolutely crazy. Check him out on "Isle of Wight" video released in 1995. Hilarious/genius. His mugging and commentary will make you laugh and cry.
@FenderPrestigionBass Um, you're right, but "Allison" wasn't part of John's name. John Alec Entwistle -- no more, no less. His first wife's first name was Alison (one "l"), FWIW.
I believe Gene played that on the recording, but there were a ton of songs that Gene did not play on. If nothing else, he is completly honest about what he played on and didn't. Ace didn't play the solo on "Flaming Youth" or "Sweet Pain".
@korgri You're telling me that Pete Townshend gives a rat's ass about the roadies? Shoot, the original ones probably died trying to keep up with Keith.
Gene Simmons never harbored any real desire to be any better a bass player than he is. He is content to be average (to be charitable). That is by his own admission. While he was never the bass player Entwistle is, Entwistle was never the business man Simmons is. There are tradeoffs all throughout life and everyone has to find what they exel at. Gene did as did John.
@stevedrums Ah, didn't know that about Bob Ezrin...now the hard question(which had occurred to me before today): do you think Gene actually plays it live (or ever did on the recording), or is there some button on the desk that plays a sample hit by a sound man with good timing?
the sad thing is Entwhistle played rock'n'rolls first bass solo-and right here he's playing it's last. My faith in bass as a modern instrument dissappeared with entwhistles death, because there something he can do that no one else can-be consistantly GOD LIKE. r.i.p.
One of the Greatest if not THEE Greatest Bass player in Rock N Roll ..NEVER To Be Duplicated again......Just as the Combo of Entwhistle / Moon ...NEVER to be duplicated EVER EVER EVER EVER.
Not really to your you'll die trying comment. Fuck yeah that Entwistle should rightfully be bassist of the decade right before Geezer Butler, Les Claypool and Matt Freeman. Claypool and Freeman may be better than John, but he is the most innovative ever. He did amazing things on bass that hadn't been heard of before.
You're right. Claypool and Freeman just know more techniques, but that never made someone a true bassist (only to the 'slap'-morons). Victor Wooten is very skilled but he sucks hard, for example.
The Ox it's the best anyone can ever get: he's not just a good bassist, he's innovative, very musical and a true genius.
@Fredrockroll Good songwriter too. His only misfortune was being in a band with a great one. Not that it hurt his career any. Always looked forward to those humorously macabre ditties he came up with.. The Who had the best sense of humor, even when they were being serious.
@geezer6970 Claypool is technically adept, but sort of a One Trick Pony in my opinion. Besides, I think he took a lot of his style from Tony Levin. Listen to his playing on King Crimson's Discipline lp and you'll see what I mean.
@RubHerSoul1 Tony Levin is one of the most underrated bass players around- however, almost all the neck tapping stuff you hear him playing with Crimson (or with Peter Gabriel) was done on a Chapman Stick and not a bass guitar.
@cappadizzy Yeah, I've heard of that instrument. I used to see it on the credit sleeves in lp jackets. But of course you see where Claypool obviously got it from. Levin had much more versatility in stylistic situations too. If Claypool does as well, I haven't heard it. In fact, you never hear about LC much anymore.
@RubHerSoul1 Yes, I totally agree. I play bass guitar and, to me, Les Claypool is interesting for about 5 minutes- kind of like a novelty-Tony Levin is the real deal. His use of the Chapman Stick only goes to prove that- like a stringed piano- bass parts with his left hand, electric guitar type stuff with his right. On the 4 string, any doubters should watch Larks Tongues Pt II from the '80s Crimson line-up. Claypool is down the line behind a lot of other bass guitar players.
@cappadizzy which would explain my query as to where Claypool's been for the last 10 years or so. Levin didn't just master and pioneer bass playing, he knows all diferent forms of music. I mean one minute he's with Paul Simon, then King Crimson. That's a pretty wide range. He's also on the demo track for Lennon's "I'm losing You" with Rick Neilsen on guitar and Bun E Carlos. The guy get's the best gigs thats for sure.
@fart813 Dude, the Who sucked. They didn't have enough balls; weren't heavy at all. I like the song substitute, and about a handfull of other songs (mostly from the Who's next album), but for the most part, they were lame.
@toadman842 Substitute ?!....WOW........You Are Just A Mere Listener and will not be allowed into the club of Taste and Knowledge , simply you have none and were raised on the Radio and shows incredibly ,...now go back to your power rock station and win some bieber tickets for your life partner. and as far as balls, The Who had them....you have them too there just on your chin.....
@fart813 RUSH...Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, Neil Peart (although I admit that Geddy's voice is an acquired taste). I feel ya though. If you don't love the Who, you don't love good music.
I've just sat and watched that with my mouth hanging open! I always knew John was extraordinary, but even so. I would have been bowing at his feet like Pete...incredible! I don't think I have EVER seen anyone do hammer ons (is that the correct term?) on a bass guitar!
No wonder he was bass player of the millennium. It was so richly deserved. Amazing how those four guys met up and came together at exactly the right point in their lives. If I believed in it, I'd say it was destiny. Wow!
For those that are viewing John Entwistle for the first time, what you are witnessing is the "Bassist Of The Millenium" voted in 2000 by other professional bass players and musicians. You are probably thinking WTF was that? What did I just see? Was that real? Nobody can play like or he is not human. Yes he is real and human and that bass would cut right through you it was so loud and awesome. I have watched him many times and I am still in awe after 45 yrs. The Who greatest live band. Cheers
He was WITHOUT QUESTION the best bassist ever. Its almost foolish to try and think of another who came close to being as innovative and inspirational as John Entwistle.
I was at this show at the Royal Albert Hall. I remember John fiddling with his foot pedals prior to his solo. In the end he stopped playing.Looked gutted. He put his hand in the air to the crowd as if to say "dont worry" them cranked the volume up. What a bloke. RIP John. My hero!!
had the same veiw as you but in 1989 doing tommy but pete playing acoustic but so close to the ox i could see his led fret markers but it was like the best thunder storm in youre life!
Hey I know entwistle is gone and was one of rockers favorite bass player,RIP. but the smooth jazz and funk bassist Wayman Tisdale is gone to. he was one of the best bassist in my style of music so I feel the hurt .peace to all the bass players and music lovers of these guys.
I have a friend, actually my band's drummer, who saw The Who shortly before John died. Of course, he fucks with me and jokes about how bad they all were, because he knows how much I love them.
I don't even get insulted when people say that he is not the best at what he does (this goes for Pete, Keith and Roger too). I just know it. ITS A FACT!!!
I feel bad for Roger these days. He was an awesome singer, but you can't control how your voice ages, I guess. It sucks that they cancel shows when he loses his voice.
well, that's because entwistle can play the piano, and also knows how to play several brass instruments too. his mother played the piano, and his father, trumpet.
JE's playing was way ahead of it's time. Pioneered "round wound" bass strings-being the first to have that distinctive tone that has been a staple in the bass world since.
john entwistle is the most innovative bass guitarist in history. he was tapping before eddie van halen knew what a guitar was... but simmons def gives him a run for his money... go listen to his 2 note bass solo... ha
From the Guardian, 09-02-2002: "The show is singer Roger Daltrey's fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust, whose banners lurk guiltily stage left and right. Daltrey, all oafish charm and hairless chest, does an impassioned charity awareness speech before the encore. Townshend returns to the stage muttering, "I don't know what he said, but it's all lies. Who gives a shit?" The toes of the Royal Albert Hall's crowd collectively curl."
It's too bad Pete was in 'cunt mode' for these shows, seeing as how they'd be the last time he'd play before an audience with the man who'd been his musical soulmate from the start.
If you don't believe me, check out some of the comments Pete made at the RAH shows.
dougm1971, good question!, re:'what comments were those' - doesn't sound like Pete -and it really doesn't matter anyway-(sound on this vid. could be better)- but a Great song is Great song.
yep this was filmed from the audience. There is of course better footage out there but this is the last gig John ever played, so I thought it was worth seeing.
last solo. that's fucked up man. who would've thought he'd bite the dust in just a few hours. i dunno, that's rock n roll i guess.
still, this solo was one of john's best. think he wouldn've played it the same if he knew he would be toast after this show. he's not showing it, being the "quiet one", but you know he's putting his entire heart and soul into this.
it's just great how he motions with his finger "one moment" and then cranks it into overdrive
He did'nt pass away until june this is from february , fortunately i managed to get to the portsmouth show on the first night . Sadly missed still. RIP OX
Had tickets for that round of shows. Been a Who fan since the early 70s. I had never seen them live before. Unfortunately my show wasn't until September, John was already gone by then.
Dude...thanks so much for putting this up. I know this sounds kinda mean, but I'm still pissed at him for dying. Coke and hookers...wished he'd have skipped the coke.
mcul2112, I'm afraid I agree completely. When I learned about the coke, I was angry and disappointed. It was like, John, you're older than my father. You need to cut this stuff out. You're not 30. But, people say that life on the road is hard, and one needs the boost, etc. So who knows?
Naw...he was partyin'. (He wasn't playing a concert with two hookers.lol!) I love partying too. But man...that f'ing coke. He's another case and point.
Aw hell...still love him. What a monster that dude was...guess he gave us all more than plenty...
Yes, I got in trouble for screaming by my parents when I found out they were touring! lol The venue near me goes on sale tomorrow after the presale so I'm hoping I can get decent seats, it'd be a shame to be there but not be able to see Roger and Pete!
MrModDog, you are one lucky sonofagun!!!! I would've given my soul to see a John solo live---looking back, i bet it's very humbling to know that you actually saw his last solo ever...OMG, LOVE the Pete ending, too...John was/is/will always be the master.
whoaaaa, your brother is lucky. i guess there's a reason for everything...even when it comes down to a Who gig...! I saw The Who in '06 in Ottawa--first time they came there since around '68 (i think) when Keith was still around, and it was the best show i've ever seen, but i was still expecting to hear a roar from the bass and it wasn't there.. :( "Tea and Theater" made me cry at the show!
@whotles69 - I know just what you mean. Tea and Theatre always makes me cry too. Great big wails to be honest. Runny nose the works. Bugger Pete Townshend and his songwriting gift. He sure knows how to wring out your heart.
John Entwistle - best bass guitarist ever to pick up an instrument.
Keith Moon - best drummer to ever park his arse on a drumstool.
The Who - best rock band in the world.
Just my humble opinion, however. I'm a musician myself, and they always blow me away.

I feel bad for Roger these days. He was an awesome singer, but you can't control how your voice ages, I guess. It sucks that they cancel shows when he loses his voice.

Cliff didn't suck, he was also a great bass player but John Entwhistle was the best of all time.

THE BOSS OF BASS
THE LORD OF THE LOW END
When it comes to the bass, John was the MAN! no one comes close.
TheSevensound 2 years ago 8
That is awesome that you got this on video. He's last solo. That's so depressing.
FluffMyGarfield 2 years ago
I agree. I always wanted to meet him. His fingers almost look like he's playing piano instead of bass. He was great!
fairday2 2 years ago
well, that's because entwistle can play the piano, and also knows how to play several brass instruments too. his mother played the piano, and his father, trumpet.
soothsayer0 2 years ago
I agree. I got my first album because he was playing a french horn, which is my instrument. Such talent.
fairday2 2 years ago
Im guessing Roger is sitting flat on the ground because he wants to feel Entwistles bass rumble the stage?

Cool comment bro!

JE's playing was way ahead of it's time. Pioneered "round wound" bass strings-being the first to have that distinctive tone that has been a staple in the bass world since.

There's only one bassist I like more than John Entwistle and that's Gene Simmons. Paul McCartney runs a distant third after The Ox.
SuperMike82 3 years ago
I'm sorry but Kiss and Gene make everything BUT music.
ZzLezionzZ 3 years ago 5
i wouldnt go that far but i can definetely tell that entwhistle is a much better bassist then gene simmons.
LifelessLeather 3 years ago 8
gene simmons is a fucking poser...not even in the same league as entwhistle
ironhorse730 3 years ago 23
@ironhorse730 A patato can play better than gene al he does in his trademark 'solo' is spit clemato juice and pluck one string several times... jeez

Entwistle damn it his name is spelled Entwistle
atgskater14 1 year ago
@ironhorse730 Don't even mention them in the same breath. John was an artist, Gene a hack who is good at making money...
ridingroy 1 year ago
john entwistle is the most innovative bass guitarist in history. he was tapping before eddie van halen knew what a guitar was... but simmons def gives him a run for his money... go listen to his 2 note bass solo...

EuchridEucrow1 3 years ago
Not sure what comments you mean. I was at this show but not the night before.

what comments were those ?

dougm1971, good question!, re:'what comments were those' - doesn't sound like Pete -and it really doesn't matter anyway-(sound on this vid. could be better)- but a Great song is Great song.

Just a very muddled soundtrack. There is a better video of John out there.
sportster16301 3 years ago
yep this was filmed from the audience.

Dude...thanks so much for putting this up. I know this sounds kinda mean, but I'm still pissed at him for dying. Coke and hookers...wished he'd have skipped the coke.
Fuck Coke. Fuck Coke to Hell...
mcul2112 3 years ago 3
mcul2112, I'm afraid I agree completely. When I learned about the coke, I was angry and disappointed. It was like, John, you're older than my father. You need to cut this stuff out. You're not 30. But, people say that life on the road is hard, and one needs the boost, etc. So who knows?
cdieckman 3 years ago 2
Naw...he was partyin'. (He wasn't playing a concert with two hookers.lol!) I love partying too. But man...that f'ing coke. He's another case and point.
Aw hell...still love him. What a monster that dude was...guess he gave us all more than plenty...
mcul2112 3 years ago
yeah cdiekman your right
john was proably just looking for a boost the night before the show
its really a shame he couldent kick that addiction

MrModDog, you are one lucky sonofagun!!!! I would've given my soul to see a John solo live---looking back, i bet it's very humbling to know that you actually saw his last solo ever...OMG, LOVE the Pete ending, too...John was/is/will always be the master.
whotles69 3 years ago
yeah I was shocked when he died so soon after (june 27th 2002)
My brother was even luckier, he wasn't going to come to this gig but changed his mind at the last minute!
MrModDog 3 years ago
whoaaaa, your brother is lucky. i guess there's a reason for everything...even when it comes down to a Who gig...! I saw The Who in '06 in Ottawa--first time they came there since around '68 (i think) when Keith was still around, and it was the best show i've ever seen, but i was still expecting to hear a roar from the bass and it wasn't there.. :( "Tea and Theater" made me cry at the show!
whotles69 3 years ago
@whotles69 - I know just what you mean. Tea and Theatre always makes me cry too. Great big wails to be honest. Runny nose the works. Bugger Pete Townshend and his songwriting gift. He sure knows how to wring out your heart.
John Entwistle - best bass guitarist ever to pick up an instrument.
Keith Moon - best drummer to ever park his arse on a drumstool.
The Who - best rock band in the world.
Just my humble opinion, however. I'm a musician myself, and they always blow me away.
