Mark, there is a simple way to see warnings in levels, just hold Alt while moving pointers for highlights and shadows.

what shortcut key did you hit Mark, when you filled the new layer with white ?

@zdumbi On a mac it's option+delete, or command+delete. On a pc it's ctrl+backspace or alt+backspace. One of them fills the layer with the foreground colour and the other fills it with the background colour. Can't remember which does which but there you go. :)
